We wanted to stay away from the cookie cutter resorts that are similar all over the world and we tried to find something uniquely Balinese. We finally decided to book the Ayung Resort, Ubud. If you are planning a trip to Bali and you want to explore the culture and art of Ubud then the Ayung might be worth putting on your short list of places to stay.
In this video we are going to show you around the Ayung, tell you about the resort, the suites, the restaurant and give you an honest review of our stay here. We are not sponsored. We pay for all of our own trips. We are not trying to sell you anything and we never tell the resorts that we make videos about our stay. No one ever recognizes us and that is the way we like it.
The Ayung Resort Ubud is set in a dramatic, eight hectare private jungle estate, It offers a unique blend of Balinese Architecture, natural surroundings, an eclectic art collection and traditional Balinese hospitality, nestled in the lush tropical rain forest along the banks of the Ayung River - Bali’s most sacred and important waterway. We found the Ayung to be a nice blend of luxury and tradition. It is definitely NOT a cookie cutter resort and around every corner there is some form of art. Sculptures, paintings, carvings and more.
If you are new to visiting Bali then you need to know that it takes a long time to get anywhere on the island. Traffic is horrendous so even if where you want to go is 40 kms away count on it taking a couple of hours at least.
We you arrive at the Resort you can see that the resort is built into a hill on the banks of the Ayung River. There is a security gate just off of the village streets at the entrance to the property and the check-in desk is about halfway down the hill. Depending on what type of resorts you may be used to, most of the architecture in Bali is open air.
The Ayung is a good blend of this with resort style suites and large balconies interwoven with the open air restaurant and check-in areas. The first thing we noticed about the Ayung is the art. Clearly the owner of this resort is an art lover. This unique property is the result of one man’s lifetime appreciating East and West philosophies, coupled with his desire to bring together some of the most important and impressive spiritual and material elements and sculptures that he’s collected during his lifetime. Not only is there an art gallery onsite, there are gorgeous pieces all over the resort. The whole complex feels like an immersive museum experience.
After check-in we were taken by a golf cart to our room. We booked a Princess valley view suite. There are several suite options to choose from at the Ayung.
    Deluxe Rooms
    Premium Rooms
    Princess Valley View Suites
    1 Bedroom Suite
    Valley View Villa
    Deluxe Rainforest Villa
    2 Bedroom Valley Villa
    Royal Rainforest Villa
If you have mobility issues then this resort likely won’t work well for you. We booked our room online in advance and there were some included perks that were really nice.
There are a few complimentary activities that the resort organizes like a village rice field trek. A Basic Yoga Class. And Daily Shuttle Service to Ubud center. The shuttle is a mini van that holds a few people, not a lot and it only runs twice a day so you do need to book your seat and plan around it. We found it too limiting to use but you can use it to get into Ubud and then get a gojek or grab car to take you back to the resort. When you are in town there are lots of cars and they are a minute or two away so getting back to the resort is easy. From the resort into Ubud takes longer. It is further out so give yourself more time than you think you need.
If you choose to stay at the Ayung make sure you go and walk down to the river. The sculptural wall is just amazing. So much better in person than I can manage to capture on video but here is a look. They told me that this wall was here before the resort was.
The Wijaya Kusuma Restaurant is the jewel in the crown of The Ayung Resort.
They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, with some stunning panoramic views across The Ayung Resort valley and gorge below. The views from this restaurant never got old.
This restaurant was our favourite part of this resort. The views. The monkeys. The food. The service. It was all excellent and even after eating here for breakfast each day for a week plus several dinners we didn’t get sick of it.
If you’re new to our channel, thanks so much for watching. If you are a regular viewer who is gob smacked that this was not a Mexican All inclusive resort video, I apologize but I also hope it inspired you to maybe consider a different type of vacation and have a look at Bali.

Great video as always. The resort looked amazing although I am not sure that we are adventurous enough for Bali? ☺🙏

      Thank you so much!
We were a bit nervous as well but Bali was much easier than I expected. English is spoken everywhere. Prices are very good. A local you can call to be your private driver and your guide any day you want (less than $50 CAD for an 8 hour day)
Really friendly and kind people. 🙂

Great video. Please tell me this. I have knee issues and going up and down stairs is a problem with me. Does this resort have facilities in place (elevators, ramps, golf carts etc) to help me get everywhere I might want to go? (ie: from room to restaurants, beach, pool etc..) Thanks so much, Steve S.

Honestly, with some mobility concerns I don't recommend the Ayung. It is gorgeous but it is built into a valley on the hillside. The pathways are steep. There are a lot of stairs. Even stairs to get up to the restaurant or down to the pool. They do have golf carts you can call to take you where you want to go but you can't avoid stairs here.
IF you want to stay here with knee problems I suggest a ground floor room at the very least. I don't believe they have any elevators anywhere so you would still be doing some stairs every day.
Hope that helps a bit. 😊

We booked it separately. We flew in on Singapore Airlines. We booked the Ayung on Expedia including daily breakfast.
In the video, at 13:34 min, I show the menu from the on-site restaurant. That should give you an idea of what prices are like. It is priced in IDR so pause and do a quick conversion on your phone. 😊
You can also have food delivered using Grab or Gojek. It was pretty inexpensive compared to North American / Australian prices.
There are no restaurants close by but it is a cheap rideshare into town.
The menu at the restaurant is extensive so even if you chose to eat there nightly you wouldn't need to repeat a meal.
      Hope that helps 😊
