🐴 LONG TOES vs CHOPPING OFF THE TOES (Horses & their Hooves!)
🥵HOT TOPIC ALERT 👉Here comes a video all about the horse’s TOE!
Here is another #ItsNotRocketScience lesson with Lindsay Setchell on why it is important to leave the toe as opposed to removing the toe (chopping the toe).
Buckle up - grab a cuppa - this is going to be a long one - very fitting for the long toe 😉

UNDERRUN HEELS on a HORSE'S HOOF? (Do you know what that is? 🤔)
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed 6 měsíci
Most owners and professionals we speak to are not sure what an underrun heel really is! They confuse an underrun heel with a low heel, and try to correct that by allowing the heel to grow longer. And that’s a BIG problem for the horse. In this lesson Lindsay Setchell discusses underrun heels, long toes, the incredible papillae (that no-one ever talks about) and why chopping off the toe interrup...

Why is HOOF CARE CONFUSING? (leaving toes or chopping off toes?)

In this #itsnotrocketscience lesson instructor Lindsay Setchell discuss the two different views of hoof care whilst rehabbing horses: 1. The 'leave the toe' method (HM) 2. Why is the pedal bone (P3) being lost to osteonecrosis? (Laminitis)
zhlédnutí 222Před 7 měsíci
Another lecture by Lindsay Setchell about P3 (pedal bone) in the foot of the equine. Equines throughout the world are notoriously treated incorrectly when it comes to hoof care, but especially during laminitis. The hoof capsule begins to distort because of the separation that has been happening to the laminae connecting P3 to the wall. The belief is that P3 then loses its attachment and begins ...

Debunking the HUGE myth of the DDFT rotating the pedal bone (P3)

So seems to me after watching this after having my first experience with winter laminitis and after having X-rays showing no rotation … that because my horse doesn’t have good hoof conformation (flat footed) need to #1 keep my flat footed horse trim at optimal #2 keep my horses body warm during cool temps, #3 boot my horse during critical times #3 monitor his diet as if metabolic #4 be vigilant to any gait changes and address them by understanding the cause.

My horse had founder for over 6 years and one thing I noticed is the farrier shaving off his toe at every trim. He shaved it so much you could see the laminae showing and both he and the vet said this had to be done to release pressure from the front. When I tried to reverse this it was too late and he eventually had to be put down. I'm glad to have found your videos to help me, not the farrier, trim my 2 other horses better, thank you.

  • @annettekatharinadembeck1705

Does that mean I never cut the toe? My horse has laminitis and had a Strasser-trim which I deeply regret to be honest but I was told it would be necessary...! Then she did not have a trim for a longer period of time and the toe grew very long. It was shortened now but not more than the white line suggested. She seems to walk better now. Looking forward for your comment on that. Thank you and it is a great job you are doing informing the horse-world of so may misconceptions. Thank you!

My horse has very sore soles and swelling in the shoulder area. I bought the Cavallo hoof boots and tried numerous supplements to no avail. To my knowledge, there is no floundering but that does stand in a slight laminitis stance at times. Chewing up the Cavallo hoof boots. The front hooves are growing only slightly. Needs help as to what treatment can be beneficial 😢.

Your use of “evolution” and “design” interchangeably shows that you don’t understand either term. Horses and humans evolved over billions (not millions) of years from a common ancestor. Nobody designed either species. Unfortunately, artificial selection at the hands of humans gave my thoroughbred and my anglo-arab hooves that required shoes. I now ride a mustang, and he will probably always be barefoot. In the interest of being natural, he rarely wears a saddle, never uses a bit, and often goes without reins.

What an excellent, clear and informative video. The desperate toe trimming and leaving heels high on laminitics has never made sense to me - the classic 'laminitic stance' tells us all we need to know about where the pain is. X-rays together with easily seen stretched damaged inflammed laminae tell all who stop and think, that it's not P3 that moves but the wall that's growing abnormally. Presumably, the 'ski tip' on P3 grows in an effort to have more bone in position for supporting weight. I so so hope some vets and farriers and their teachers at the training institutions see this video. 🙂

    • @lindsaysetchell
      @lindsaysetchell Před 7 měsíci

Hi Paco, the best prevention is quite simple - a more natural lifestyle of the horse. A species-specific diet and management and hoof care, reduces stress on their systems and sets the horse up for a more healthy life of longevity. :)
