The deceit has been going on for years. Import the real thing and charge a fortune for it because it’s ‘imported’. Then start brewing it here but charge the same. Someone in the comments mentioned Stella, they may well have been the first, but practically all ‘imported’ beers, if you look carefully, are brewed over here now. I’m looking at you Mr Moretti! 😡

LOL Skol.. bloody'ell. At school in the 80s 😮 we went to Gullivers World by coach. We bought a few cans of Skol and drank it on the way.. the teachers kept looking at the back of the coach wondering why we were all singing Skol Skol Skol Skol Skol.. from the advert. When we're out, I've been drinking JW Lee's Manchester Craft... really nice you must try it. From shops, I get that M&S Belgian beer in cans 😮 its a very summery beer... smashing the imported Peroni and Adnams Suffolk Bitter too.

Weihenstaphaner is a well deserved No 1. I'd rank Paulaner ahead of Franzishaner though.

The uk stuff is sold in many pubs near me.. its awful and has chemicals in it.. some that enhance the head or frothy top. Not a fan at all. Its Molson Coors ffs. Stay away from ANYTHING Molson Coors. Just look at their portfolio and run in the other direction

I am totally shocked by the beer prices in the UK. At Aldi (no good beer anymore) or Lidl I pay about 75 Cents for their own style or about 1 Euro for the good brands. If I buy my nomal beer in a crate of 20 bottles it is about 18 Euro for a local beef from a brewery thats more than 350 years family owned and over 500 years old. On the other side I live in Germany and such beer prices would definitely cause a big riot.

I remember when I first had staropramen and it was great. Then it appeared everywhere and was suddenly horrible. Happens with a lot of beers unfortunately.

Have to admit I bought some in Liddle the other day and l thought this is nicer than normal didn't realise

One of the best beers I have ever tasted. I first tried this beer when I went to Scotland. I made a quick stop by the store before arriving at my rooms and bought several bottles of various local beers. For some reason, one bottle did not make it into our little refrigerator. So, it sat out and warmed up a little bit, not quite room temperature, but no longer ice cold. I popped it open...! All of the flavors that he mentioned in the review simply rushed out! I was amazed at how complex the flavors were in this beer. So, I wondered--is Old Jock's Ale supposed to be served less cool, like a stout? I found that the flavor was better if the beer was not ice cold. Anyway, Old Jock's Ale remains one of my favorite beers! Cheers!

Thanks for the tip Simon, hopefully my local Lidl stocks it? Ichnusa must have changed since we used to drink it in the eighties in Decimomannu NATO base in Sardinia. It was always bloody awful.

the euro versions are allways much better.dab lager from dortmund used to be good value for money,and a nice beer,me and my mates used to clear the shelves of it in my local offie,bought them all,alas like any other great find,once they see its popular,they bang the price up,were talking 20 years ago,dont see it often now,but still made,not sure if they have a british brewed version,but the german stuff is a nice refreshing lager

So apparently the Czech version is 'on another level' yet only scores an extra point? FFS, this is what sums up the bollox that the RACB channel has become.

To be fair you shouldn’t have told Kim anything about the lagers. To get a true response from her she should have done a “blind test.” You may have unintentionally swayed her opinion on them.

At The Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad is used to drink it "cool in de ice". We got beat anyway.

The UK version is anything BUT "perfectly balanced", it tastes more like someone has poured battery acid in it. I'll be off to Lidl tomorrow to get me some Czech Staropramen :)

Many thanks for this. Just picked some up and it's now a new favourite. Less malty than Budv and no where near the hop zing of Urquell. A nice balance point between the two when you don't want those two extremes. I thought I stopped liking Star a while ago but turns out it was just the uk version.

I did my own comparison tonight after seeing this video and managed to get some in my local Lidl.....I cannot believe the difference , its a completely different beer. Noticed that Uk Staropramen has a slight aroma of burnt toast and the imported beer is so clean smelling. The Lidl beer is so so good........brilliant video Simon!!

I live in Croatia for six months of the year. I drink Starro as my beer of choice and I get a crate of 20 X500ml for £12 a case plus on most days I get a fee glass or a free “Krug” when I replace the crate Tesco Staro when I drink it over there tastes like pencil sharpenings and where as Staro in Croatia tastes like mothers milk

I still think these battle beer reviews should be done blind. For me more often than not you seem to have already made your mind up about the beer before it's in the glass. I dont think you did it on this one tbf

Staropramen is probably the worst beer in the Czech Republic.

Great wee review and just shows how the same beer can taste different when brewed in another country. I love picking up a beer in Aldi or Lidl that I haven't tried so will give this a go. Keep up the good work. 👍🏻

Best way to avoid all the BS lads is to drink real ale, cant get any more local and fresher than it and the style needs our support 👍

Was expecting a 6/10 for UK version and 9/10 for Czech version. So in Simon's view not much difference then.

The entire area has become very dilapidated and derelict. I do agree this area should be used by the locals if managed properly with permission and support of the council. Sad to see it go to waste. The council needs to do better. Still There’s an awful lot of rubble there. Japanese knot weed is desperate stuff, very difficult to get rid and potentially damaging to homes near by.

People were saying similar about Leffe being brewed in the UK and not tasting good. I picked up one the other day (brun veriety) and luckily when I inspected the bottle it was not a UK one. Not sure if it was Lidl or Tesco I got it from. Pretty sure it was Lidl. I haven't tasted one brewed here yet. Although the comments were about the blonde.
