My old man worked at Morland Brewery in Abingdon in the late 70s and 80s. I even lived on the site when they turned it into flats.
I have been a fan of all the Old Speckled Hen beers since I was a teenager, nothing beats it on draft.
Bring back the mini kegs I say.
Did you manage to save any of the history of the place (Any items from the brewing process, signs, barrels, that sort of thing)?
My mum was based in Abingdon in the 1960's in the RAF.
@@ElToro2000UK unfortunately not but the Brewery Tap pub which is on the original site has kept a few of the things you mention.
I also worked at morlands brewery in abingdon for 9 years being made redundant by greene king when the closed the brewery, there has been a noticeable change in the speckled hen since being Brewed by greene king it's not the same ,because on site in abingdon the liquor ( water ) was from artesian Wells on site !!!! your reference to 1711 was Morlands being founded not Greene king !!.
I wish we could still get OSH here in Minnesota. I miss that beer. Love the review. The beer looks damn amazing, and delicious as heck.
Will be picking some of this up. Looks great!
Love this channel!
Saw this in co-op. I might give it a try for this weekend, although 7 quid...😬
The co op are usually more expensive than Waitrose and M&S, I can never understand why, the range and quality is much less.
It's useful to know of another stockist, I'm not sure about £7, I thought the Waitrose £6 was a lot....
Heading straight to Waitrose, this sounds lovely. Sure £6 seems high for a bottle, but looks like something special to savour.
I saw this in waitrose, I was curious. Thanks for doing a review on this.
Would love to visit the brewery some day!
£6 in Waitrose seems rather pricey for a Greene King beer but it looks quite decent. I may pick up a bottle if I see it but It's the same price as a Fullers Vintage which is a top quality beer.
Picked up a couple in Waitrose today, big “father’s day” display as soon as I got in the store. £6 each, but lovely stuff indeed….and the box is great, there’s an outer sleeve then the actual box inside (Simon makes a mess of his).
Looks lovely...
Green King are dreadful.
.they reduced Old Speckled Hen on cask from 5.5 to 4.5%!
Do they still have it in Waitrose, Simon? My nearest is Pontprennau these days. I totally agree, some of these specials would be great in Greene King pubs. That's what I like about my local. Ok, the beer is mostly "Marstonised", but at least there is a new one to have every week or two. I love this channel. Keep it up!
I've had Old Speckled Hen thanks to Ian Matthews man in da shed drinking it regularly. Never had the Master
Just been to Waitrose and they’re clearing these out at £1.50 a bottle! Be quick.
Looks good, I like the box... I wish Greene King would do these specials more often...at least they have put it in a relativley wide spread supermarket, rather than online only.
About 5 years ago, I used to enjoy a speckled hen special, hen's tooth, I can't find it any more though..
I find the box on a bottle of beer like this, just as I do with collectable whisky, to usually be a waste of time.....I'm not going to drink the box..it goes in the bin. Make it a quid cheaper and spare me the fluff for the recycling bin and I'll be happier.
Do you know by any chance the LE figures for this beer? Thanks
Lovely looking beer, nice glass also 👍👍👍
People complain it's too expensive, well it's a small batch special beer! Nothing that is ment to be chugged down in drowes on a Friday night! =)
Look up what limited batches of special wine cost!
Will you be visiting any breweries overseas this yr? Really liked your Czech vlogs.
I would very much like to
Where can I buy this
Nothing to see here. Cat falls from the ceiling and Simon just carries on like this is normal. LOL. Good review. Will have to try this. Simon, is this bottle conditioned?
wish we could still buy Greene King in the States.
The core Greene King beers aren’t what they used to be unfortunately. Maybe with the exception of this one, Old Crafty Hen and at a push, Abbot Reserve.
Unfortunately as Simon says, these ones don’t get to Cask or Keg in most pubs, so you usually only see IPA, Abbot or Old Speckled Hen - each one a shadow of it’s former self.
There was a sticker on the bottom too ! 🙄
I bought this from Waitrose from the same place I got the nasty UK brewed Leffe. This was a marked improvement.... my only problem with this beer is the all the extravagant and pointless packaging which was impressive but went straight in the bin..... Perhaps this is designed for collectors and to be laid down? Though for me it's not quite strong enough to be a vintage beer.
Virtual pub tonight, Si?
October now mate
It’s raining cats and beers !!!😂
Simon unboxing like a starved chimp after a banana 🍌
Ridiculous price for a bottle of beer
End of the night..the last hurrah....lol
A good purchase for who Simon ??? You are losing your way with this type of review
Far far too expensive
No it’s not it’s £6 on there spaicel buy
@@louisbeerreviews8964 ???
Presumably small batch beer doesn't generally come cheap
In the nicest possible way, it seems like your content has lost a bit of its appeal of late. When you focus heavily on beers that are either not available in the UK or only sold by one or two companies at high prices plus postage, I lose interest. I'd prefer to hear about good beers available in supermarkets, with the occasional special and interesting one thrown in. Constantly featuring random beers from regional European breweries that I will never come across isn't engaging for me. Judging by the views on those videos, it appears I'm not the only one who feels this way.
But then Simon would have run out of beers to review years ago and then what would he do? Also bear in mind this channel has subscribers from all over the world who can buy these beers.
@@William-Anderson There is new stuff in the supermarkets on a weekly basis. Too much for one person to review frankly, no chance of running out!
Same here, thats why I like his live and walk abouts as its something relevant to me. I love his content when it's something I can pop down the pub and try or grab out and about
I think there is something for everyone, there are only so many beers available in the uk supermarkets and I think Simon does a pretty good job of keeping on top of new products.
Personally I prefer the reviews of beers that I haven't heard about. Also his oversees viewers would feel pretty left out if it was mainly UK supermarket beers!,
not worth it.
If anyone is trying to decide who to vote for soon, you won't go far wrong if you vote for Reform UK.
Nigel Farage is all for Real Ale and pubs in general, so we may well get a reduction in taxation where booze is concerned if some of his candidates get voted in.
Good luck to you all! 🇬🇧
Does anyone on this channel know anyone in authority at CAMRA? Maybe it could be advertised, to back Nigel Farage in the upcoming Election!
I would rather drink Carling for the rest of my life than vote for Farage.
