Woodturning a Fantastic Bowl From a Flat Board
This is my first attempt at woodturning a bowl from a board. The inspiration for this piece was from a video by thepapa1947. For a full instructional video on this process, please watch his video. Link below to his video and channel. I tried to stick to his instructions for my first attempt and feel I was fairly successful. I used Walnut, quilted Maple, and Padauk in this piece. I’m not sure I like the idea of using Padauk next to maple as it really hinders the finishing options due to the Padauk bleeding into the Maple. I used a gloss clear lacquer on this piece to limit the color bleed. This was a fun a simple piece to make that required a few special setups. I really enjoyed making this project and now that I feel confident in the technique, I will likely adapt it to try some different designs in the future. I had some successes and failures in this video. I tried and failed to keep the first ring from bouncing around on the lathe when cut. It was a bit of a rushed idea and I’ll come up with something better next time. I also definitely need to get a smaller parting tool. The one I used is a 3/16”x1/2” wide and burned the wood a little when cutting. I tried to modify it after cutting the outer ring and it seemed to work better but I think a smaller cutting tip would be ideal. Maybe a 1/8 inch tool would work better. Thank you to my friend Matt for welding me up that stainless steel tool rest for making the angled cuts. It might not be a pretty weld but it did exactly what I needed it to do. Thanks for watching, I hope you have a great day!

Stunning Root Ball Turning Transformation
zhlédnutí 171KPřed měsícem
I was given this Almond tree root ball from a member of my local woodturning club. This is my first attempt at turning a root ball. I was definitely a little nervous about this one, it was the largest and most unbalanced piece I have turned to date. Originally I had planned to not use any resin in this piece, but unfortunately there was no way I was going to be able to hallow it out and have it...
Woodturning Unique Walnut Log

I am turning this vessel from a walnut crotch log I won in a raffle at my local woodturners club meeting. I had some indecision about what resin project to do next, I just couldn’t pick one from the list. So I decided to take a break and make something out of just wood for a change. Definitely a fun, quick piece and I got some practice in with my all my tools. Even got to try out my new lathe s...

In this video I make a piece without the use of a pressure pot and explain why I prefer to use one. Luckily the piece came out pretty good, but I will not be trying this again. I feel a pressure pot is a requirement if turning with resin. Thank you very much to Simple Woodturning Tools for providing the scraper and rougher used in this video. They worked fantastic and I’m sure to get a lot of u...
Simple Hybrid Woodturning Project

Today I am making a simple elegant box from spalted walnut. I will be testing out some new carbide tools, a new epoxy resin, and a new finish. This was the perfect piece to test out some new techniques on. It was a fun small piece that I will keep in my shop to store my wedding ring, while I am "turning" wood into sawdust. Thank you very much to Mr. Tomasic for letting me borrow his design in t...
Woodturning Scrap Walnut Surprise

This is my first attempt at turning a true hollow vessel. I used some scrap walnut off cuts from the legs of my end table build. This was great fun and I plan to make more hallow vessel type pieces in the future. I got some new tools I am using in this video, I plan to go over all of these as well as the new finish I am using in a video soon. This may be the last time I use the urethane resin f...
Woodturning Lovely Maple Resin Bowl

I had this scrap maple left over from an old project. I milled it into 1/4” planks and spaced it with 3/16” paint stir sticks. The mold is made from 1/32” polycarbonate sheet. I am using urethane resin for the pour, not epoxy resin. I almost ran out of time for the pour. This resin only has a 12 minute working time once mixed to get it into the pressure pot, but is cured in 4 hours which is ama...

I found some pepper tree logs on the side of the road on the way to work. They had been sitting for some time and were quite dry. After looking at the unique wood I decided to try a fire theme resin pour to go with the pepper wood. I wanted to try something new that I read in a book about hybrid woodturning. I used urethane resin instead of epoxy. Supposedly it would turn easier and polish bett...

This guy earned a sub with this one. First time seeing the channel. The skill, technique... amazing. The music is good too which is always a plus
Thank you very much! Much appreciated. Hope you have a great day!!
Very nice. Love the color.
incredible, magnificent
Thank you!
I like the efficient use of material, the design and the finished product. Great work.
Thank you very much!
Fantastic handworking and idea. Thanks very much for presenting it in this video.
Thank you for watching and leaving a kind comment. I hope you have a great day!
Ok, what was with CA gluing the 2 strips across the back? They seem to disappear once the parting started.
That was my failed attempt at keeping the first large ring from bouncing around on bed. The two strips flew off as soon as I cut thru the ring. I’ll figure out something better next time. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great day!
Thank you very much for this video, I have looking for a new saw and was think Harvey maybe what i wanted but most of the the reviews i found where from people the Harvey gave a saw to. I understand that of them will try to be fair but it was great to find one from some that purchased the saw.
That is the best combination of wood and resin turned into a vase that I've seen. Still a bit confused about the original "off cuts". The dimensions seemed to be pretty accurate or is that just me? Anyway, congratulations. This was brilliant.
Thanks for watching. The off cuts were from a previous video of building two end tables. I did cut the pointy ends off so they would fit in the pressure pot, but I just got lucky the angles worked out. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I hope you have a great day! Scott

Супер!
Boy, oh boy! That was one screwed up, pot bound tree! What type of wood was it? I used to dabble in marquetry and loved all the types of veneer available. I just loooove wood! This is like polishing a raw opal. You can’t wait to see what you uncover. It’s magnificent!!!!❤. From junk to jewels!
I'll be honest, i stopped watching at 3:55 when he pulled out the epoxy. I honestly thought this was going to be wood turning, not plastic turning. Very disappointing 😞
Sir we don’t want to see what it is ahead of time… we know it will be a vase a bowl a globe or something you put things in… and it will be dipped in things. So please stop ruining the surprise
That is one of the most beautiful vases I’ve ever seen turned!
Thank you very much! I hope you have a great day!
Balaize....! Magnifique 😮
Really cool. The combination of color and the nice random curves makes for a pleasing result. I think I will try that. Thank you.
Great job with the General Lathe!
Nice. Please lathe guys stop the turning regularly so we can see how it develops. I zoom by a lot of the endless turning to the stopped moments
Good work❤❤
Thank you! Hope you have a good day!
Good idea and your job!
Beautifully done!
Thank you very much!
Love your work, please keep it up. I'm learning by watching.
Thanks, will do! Hope you have a great day!
Just a thought maybe use painters tape and glue to hold them together temporarily. Splitting apart is clean. 🤘🏼❤
Enjoyed the video, I need to make a fixture like you have to guide the parting tool. Well done! The music was spot on for the video! You the musician?
Thank you very much. And no, definitely not me making the music. That talent skip me in my family. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a great day! Scott
Great vid. Never seen it done like this before. Credit to you. thks

Thank you for sharing your opinion and leaving a comment. I hope you have a great day!
Great work, I found it interesting you used Yorkshire grit after applying the finish. I will have to try that today and see the results. Well Done.
I’m not a huge fan of using lacquer as a finish, but the Yorkshire grit worked very well as a polishing compound. Hope it works well for you as well. Have a good day! Scott
Beautiful piece and interesting process. I’ve only attempted small projects. Full View and Like 👍
Thank you very much
That looks gorgeous, and I would love to try something like that, but you had to use 3 things I dont have in my shop... Band Saw, Planer, and wood glue... Other than that, I think Ive got it!
WOW!!!!!!
Question; where did you buy that remote power switch?

Suggestion; have a link to the next part to make it convenient for the viewer to continue watching.

Thank you very much! Hope you have a great day Scott
Looks like English Walnut. I bought a lot of it as picture framing material but I far prefer Black Walnut. Both woods are not even really similar to each other.
That was a really nice video from beginning to end. Good pattern well designed and carefully glued. The bowl looks great! I also really enjoyed your selection of music!!
Thank you very much! Hope you have a great day!
man, you could have stoped at a beautiful cutting board, but no, you made an awesome dish :D great work

Perfect job, thank you so much for great video
So nice of you! Thanks for watching.
Stupendous, I was so surprised when you stopped the lathe at the end. Thank you for sharing this journey with us. 😎
Thank you!
I used a similar method to make a large bowl, 16” diameter, with Poplar and Padauk. It was fine until I Started putting on the oil finish, and the Padauk bled so bad into the Poplar that it liked like raw salmon. Learning experience. I bought some African Blackwood and tested it first for the bleed…..ended up pairing it with Purpleheart - turned out fantastic!
Wery nice
Not a wood bowl, but a chemical bowl!
You did a great Job, and the music fits Perfect, thanks for this Video

@@squareandlevel thanks. I love seeing my ideas used. Have you made my vortex sled?
