- Today I am making a simple elegant box from spalted walnut. I will be testing out some new carbide tools, a new epoxy resin, and a new finish. This was the perfect piece to test out some new techniques on. It was a fun small piece that I will keep in my shop to store my wedding ring, while I am "turning" wood into sawdust. Thank you very much to Mr. Tomasic for letting me borrow his design in this video ( link to his video below with step by step instructions for making this piece)
And thank you to Lets Resin for providing the deep pour epoxy resin that was used in this video.

By accident I notice a video, and thank you for mentioning my work and channel, you sir did excellent work and I enjoy watching it....😊
Thank you for everything you’ve taught me. Your videos are a treasure trove of information and knowledge. Again, I appreciate you letting me borrow your design. I hope you have a great day!
@@squareandlevel no worries, glad to help out ☺️
Gorgeous box, and the green you chose looks natural with the wood.
I don't often leave comments on videos but we absolutely need more of these. Your delivery, cutaways and methods are first class (and bloody funny). I have a shop that needs cleaning (yes, I'm envious) if you are ever at a loss. Oh yeah, super snappy dresser. Top work sir. Top work.
Thank you very much! Thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated. Hope you have a great day!
"Shades of butterfly farts" for companies that name their paints something exotic. Priceless!
Love the commentary and information on your experience with tool's and resin. I also like using let's resin products. Now I have to convince my partner to use non traditional turning tools 😂 thanks
Nice to hear your voice and your thoughts! I love your videos both ways. I continue to appreciate your methodical, exacting ways - quite inspiring actually. The small ring box turned out great!
Thank you so much. Hope you have a great day!
Just a thought maybe use painters tape and glue to hold them together temporarily. Splitting apart is clean. 🤘🏼❤
Not the butterfly fart colors! 🤣🤣🤣 That had me in stitches for a moment. Lovely bowl, and a nice belly laugh to go with it. 😁
Haha Love It, your old guy character sounds like so many comments I've had in the past, don't you just love keyboard warriors 🤣. Also while I'm here can I put my hand up and vote for a video on wood stabilisation please, something I have never tried but would love to. All the best, Mike
Also I found the best way to keep the Lets Resin colours separate is to let them sit for 80 mins first before mixing.
Hahaha. Between you and me. Most those were the negative comments I’ve gotten in the past. My passive aggressive way of replying to them. Thanks for watching. Wish you the best of luck in the future. Think I remember you are moving shops? Hope it all “turns” out for the best. And thanks for the tip about keeping the colors separate. Will be trying that one out soon!
@@squareandlevel You're welcome! Yes I move house at the end of the month and the shop equipment gets moved on the 2nd March. Fun times ahead!
That is one BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF WOOD TURNING
Love the clam shell box. Every time you use your drill bit with a handle, I think he must watch Tom Tom's Videos. It's always enjoyable to be proven right. Thanks for the videos. 😎
Thank you Steve. Tom is an amazing craftsman and teacher. Definitely appreciate him.
Thanks for sharing your expertise. I was lucky enough to get aset of carbide tools by Robert Sorby called Turnmaster. They have a unique setting for turning flat and with a simple adjustment lock at 45 degrees. It's taking me a while to get used to them but they're impressive. I also only use scrap wood It's a great feeling of self righteousness 😅. I'm lucky enough to have access to an architectural restoration woodshop. Oak and sapele are the main offcuts. Enjoy your woodturning and thanks for the grumpy git. Have you been spying on me?
Great video, thank for the tip about the cardboard rolls !
I love my carbide tipped tools and often make wood/resin pieces. Enjoyed your video.
What finish did you use before Waterlox?
I usually just use raw linseed oil during the wet sanding process and buff with a beeswax linseed oil mix for the final coat. Still working it out. I’ll probably make a video on the process once I get it refined and am happy with the results.
I’ll look forward to it. Thank you.
Turned out beautifully. Thanks for sharing.
Just came across your videos. Really enjoy your style. Thanks
Awesome, thank you!
That is a beautiful piece, and a fantastic finish. And that was a great choice for the color on the resin. I have a set of the full-size simple woodturning carbide tools plus traditional wood turning tools. I enjoy using the carbide tools they come in handing for certain things, like super hard woods. . I have also watched some of Tomislavs videos on wood turning. I enjoy his work. I have pretty much learned to turn from watching CZcams .
Very nice job. Love the green. I learned a lot today. Thank you.
You did a great job saving the walnut. Another awesome turning!
Thank you sir! Have a good one!
I don't give a continental what anyone says...the colour is perfect 👌
"Shades of butterfly farts." LOL! Love your work, just happened by your channel.
Your personality is great and your kind of work ❤
Very Nice work indeed :)
Thank you very much!
Beautiful
Thank you Pam!
Great video, the commentary is very informative, thank you for that. The “old man and the stick” is perfect, I really enjoyed that. Looking forward to you future videos. Oh and a very nice piece too.
Thank you. Hope you have a great day!
❤beautiful ❤
Sweet...! Love the colors & look. Waterlox can be a good finish. I use it but it doesn't seem to give the perfect glass like finish I want. Inside vases and bowls it's fine. I also discovered StopLossBags, they keep your liquid finishes from gelling up or skinning over.. I've had my Waterlox in one for over a year and it's still good as new.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll look into that. Hope you have a great day!
Muy bonito te quedo genial!! Te felicito.
And the Academy Award for best character actor in a homemade video tutorial goes to.................................................YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😁
Haha. Thanks Nick. Have a good one sir.
Хорошая работа 🎉
Really enjoyed your video. It was entertaining and informative. The lidded bowl came out looking really good with the colours you chose. I'm not colour blind myself but have friends that are. They explained it to me, and your explanation was so good. I have enjoyed your videos that i have watched to date and wish you well with your channel. Thank you so much for sharing with us. May I suggest you watch (if you haven't already) Jim Sprague at Sprague wood turning. He has done some awesome work and is very educational. Looking forward to your future work. Cheers Bruce
Thank you so much! I have been subscribed to Mr.Sprague for a while now and is definitely one of the people that inspired me to try to do this in the first place. I actually am hoping to try out one of his designs in the near future. I need to get his ok first though. I have a bunch of seed pod on my property and he did a video on using those a while back. Could be fun. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great day!
Love the project as it turned out so very cool. I am curious though as to where you purchased the Polycarbonate easy ruler sheet you used. If you could share, I would be appreciative
Thanks for watching!

Here’s a link to the polycarb. I’ll add it in the description as well. Hope you have a great day!
très joli
SCOFF, SCOFF I SAY...🎩🎩🎩🎩
I thought negative rakes were for resin?
I am older than you. About 20 years old. But I really want to buy a wood lathe. I've been dreaming about this for a long time. Do you think it's worth it? Sorry for my English. Translated using Google.
Am I the only one that heard, “… can also be a bitch, Ricky” at 6:00?
Yes. Yes you are. Keeping the colors separated “can be a bit tricky”. 🤣🤣 Hope you have a great day!
You can never sand too much.......
I know of someone who is literally color blind. She sees black, white, and grays.
What was the purpose of the costume? You already look really old without it.
