Woodturning - My Biggest and Definitely my Highest Turning !!

- This was not my usual kind of turning, but I thought it was an interesting project to take on.
I was contacted by a firm who were doing restoration work to an old textile mill, Bridgehouse mill in Howarth, West Yorkshire. It is a listed building and dates back to the 18th century and at the highest point it had a turned finial that needed replacing. Since medieval times, pointed finials have been fitted to the apex of roofs, as they were thought to prevent the devil from sitting there!
It was made from Red Grandis Hardwood which is a high performing timber, with exceptional durability and perfect for external use. So lets hope the new finial lasts as long as the original!!
I needed to cut a large mortice to join the two pieces together and was kindly sent a couple of large forstner bits from Planet Plus Ltd, who stock a wide range of woodworking and woodturning tools, well worth checking them out...

That’s super!!!! How awesome to look up and be able to say ‘I did that’ …part of history ♥️
I'll be looking out for this when I walk the doggos this afternoon!
Oh Andy, that was the most beautiful turning you've ever done. The anticipation for the final marriage was palpable. That was incredible, and to have your work sitting atop that mill must be very rewarding to help restore a listed building. Well Done.
Great work. Nice to see interesting works like this that aren't showcased very often.
It's as if you are standing on top of the world with this latest achievement Andy. A lasting testament to the excellent work you put your mind and soul into, which should last a hundred years or more. Great job.
That's definitely _up there_ with your best work!
I'll get me coat... 😉
Seriously, it's amazing how you can turn a block
of heavy wood (it looks heavy to me!) into such a precise shape, or rather a number of them. It also gives me even more respect for the guy who made the original. He didn't have an electric lathe, just a manual one and, maybe (if money and type of lathe allowed for it) an apprentice to help out where possible.
Hi Andy! Excellent copy 👍and without a copy lathe. This is the good old handwork. Best regards from Hans and Cheers 🍻🎄🇦🇹.
Now you can add architectural restoration to your business card. Absolutely fantastic. Superb artistry and craftsmanship, as always.
The preparation and setup was as amazing as the wood turning itself!
Agreed 👍
They certainly picked the right person for this job. You make it look so easy!
They chose the right person for the job. Fascinating to watch every step.
What a privilege it must be to turn such a piece. Very nice work Andy.
Hi 👋, Andy , that was a great project, well worth the effort, great layout procedure, about 10/12 years ago, I made something very similar, five in total, that was fitted to a property called latter house in Norfolk, UK, I had to replace the facias and barge boards soffits, and replace some ends of our wall plate on either end of the building in Oak, the bargeboards were scallops, They were joined into the bottom part of the turning final which was square, They took me approximately five and a bit months to make, this included the time making new bargeboards under soffit, and repairing parts of the ring beam going round the roof structure, The Bargeboards , 15” , the total length of the final was around 6 foot, as approximately 20 odd inches was square for the bargeboard to fit into,
Keep up the great work , stay safe, look forward to seeing your next territorial, now retired, living in France, , Phil from the moulin, France .
Love the technical detail here, seeing how you draft the template and then transferred it, also gettingbto see you make something so large and different, whole different side to your craft
It’s fascinating to see how many measurements you have to do at the start. Your talent just blows me away. The craftsmanship is incredible.
Another great project done. Thanks Andy.
Hope you and your family have a great Christmas. ❤
Well planned and well executed Andy. Good job and thank you for sharing!
Fantastic Andy!! I was hoping to see something with this with awesome details and various technical points on it someday! I think this is some of your best work yet! What a monument to your skills, something that will last for generations.
I used to turn wood before losing my left arm sometime during the Battle of the Bulge while I was on shore leave in Viet Nam and not long after the Korean War. I know from experience that there's no VD like what you can get in Asia. Anyway, this is another great job. I can only imagine the difficulty in duplicating something vs. creating it from scratch. You are obviously a master at both.
There were some very odd sounds during this turning compared to your usual projects. From 9:54 to 10:02 is something out of a scifi movie. It's got to be type of wood since this is not what you normally use. In the end, you have a perfect replacement that you can point to and say, "I made that." Good job!
You are so much more skilled than I realized. This is awesome, especially where you had to complete the whole while the original was missing some of its parts. 👏👏👏👏👏
That’s so awesome. I imagine it is harder to recreate something precisely. This is simply amazing.
Amazing work, Andy! Really well done!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
And happy holidays!
Great turning mate. It looks as close to the original as you can get. Nicely done Andy
Take care my friend
Happy Christmas and New Years to you and the family.
May 2024 bring lots of great family and trekking experiences to you all
Cheers
Harold
Thanks Harold and the same to you
Working for historic restoration adds character to your already talented work.
Congratulations.
That is absolutely amazing, Andy! Great job! That's something you can be proud of for many years to come.
Bill
GREAT project to take on and who better than you. Be proud of yourself that you are able to help preserve history! !! !!!
Wow... bravo, well done 😍... you're now a part of the city's history 🎉
Outstanding Andy as always and with great care too👍👍👍👍👍👍
Perfeito!, vejo que para o Andy não existe missão impossível!
👏👏👏🙂🤗❤️
it's an amazing feeling to restore a piece of history. I painted a mural of my son's middle school logo on their gymnasium wall, Such a wonderful feeling that your art will be there for many years!
Love your channel!!
Thankyou 👍
Thank you!!@@AndyPhillipWoodturning
An amazing project, beautifully executed! Well done Andy ❤
Really cool project! There's some nice figuring in that wood; almost a shame it's so high up so the grain pattern can't be appreciated, but awesome work for sure!
That is really awesome. They needed a this work done, and they reached out to you! Legendary status just keeps growing.
This is the biggest thing I’ve seen you do…incredible craftsmanship and the end piece was awesome
This is an incredible piece Andy and now a beautiful piece of history. This was such a pleasure to watch. Your talent is amazing! 😊👍🏻
Mr. P., I get a real kick out of watching someone who knows their job and does it well.
I've watched you produce awesome pieces, but I really like watching as you reproduced this one, just great work.
Thanks again.
thank you!
Amazing work, Andy! You have such exceptional talent!.
Thanks for this Andy. My father was a woodwork teacher and did a lot lathe work and building as a hobby.. thanx for the memories..
What an interesting project and a fantastic result. Congratulations!
Andy, I admire all of your turning projects. The intricacies are amazing. Hollowing out various pieces is intriguing. BUT I could watch you turn spires all day long. This piece is beautiful.
I can't believe you made sure to be so precise drawing the curves onto the board and then managed to freehand them on the lathe perfectly
I would imagine there was a large amount of off-camera measuring to make sure you arrived at such an awesome final piece. Thank you for showing us part of the measuring process!!
And it became an awesome finial piece 😉😉
The algorithm doesnt always show me your stuff anymore but on the plus side its kind of a treat for me when I look your channel up as theres usually a few videos for me to watch. Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks .. Yes the algorithm has not done me any favours over the last year or so
They got the best man for the job for sure... 😊
That piece turned out very very nice. I like how you laminated the wood. My guess is to help avoid splitting and rotting?
Nicely done, Andy!! Good for the next hundred years...👍
Hi Andy...
Coincidentally I have just made 4 gable finials... nicely done...
Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Thats so beautiful! You've used your gift from God to create a gift for God ❤
How beautiful! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Well done!
Beautifully crafted - a great job👍
You've made the building Proud again Andy.
Andy, you are just too much for words! This gorgeous and beautiful piece you have created, looks incredible and awesome outside. I wholeheartedly agree with one of the comments that watching the preparation and setup was just as enjoyable to watch! Extraordinary Andy!! And Thank You!!!
Thankyou Chris 👍
Nice to see something new! Please do more!
What an interesting piece! And now I know there's a good reason to put it on the apex of roofs! 😅
Andy, I have watched many of your videos and lusted after many of your turnings. This video is a gem because it demonstrates so clearly how you planned the work to match the original. While I will NEVER have the "Andy Eye" to make the beads and coves so beautifully symmetrical, watching an artist of your caliber exercise so much patience before ever mounting the wood on the lathe.......well, it's a wonderful lesson for all your viewers. To match a particular profile, it's all in the planning. Thank you for this great piece. I'm always amazed at how you manage to deliver so much content in so short a video. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know - enough with the praise!
thanks so much
Fantastic job Andy. And what a compliment that they chose you for it. Well done.
Thankyou
Hi Andy, I've been watching now for some time, and i've got to say that is the most spectacular piece you have done!!! I mean, right from the start with the template, the marking of the wood, to the stand for the steeple point. Absolutely Stunning. Your a master at your craft!!!
Wow! Amazing work.
Fabulous! There are no words!

Beginning of a beautiful piece .you took the challenge and excelled in many ways.one of your best pieces of work.great video as always 👍👍👍😎😎😎
Thank you
It's awesome that you get to showcase your work in something so public and lasting, and that people were happy to trust you with such a task!
But I do hope you at least tried to convince them to replace the original pieces with swirly, glitter-blue resin versions.
That was fascinating!!!!! I enjoyed seeing how you worked out the pattern and then made the piece. 👍👍👍
I haven't seen a flexi-curve for 35 years! I used one in my A-level technical drawing!
Tremendous work! That will outlast all of us!
Nice!! You're a piece of history, now!
Amazing ❤
