Woodturning a two-tone bowl - #4 in my series, turned in ambrosia maple & padauk. 12” large bowl

Wood tends to dry out really quick here in Arizona. Not always a good thing ;)
The padauk was SO dry that it came off more like sawdust than shavings during turning even with a freshly sharp gouge.
But it finished up really nice with gorgeous markings on the ambrosia maple!

Wood is Ambrosia maple and padauk, turned on Grizley lathe.
Sanded down to about 3500 grit and finished inside and out with Dr. Kirk’s Scratch Free.

Thank you so much! you’re right about the glue, i’ve moved away since then from using my fingers, however with the finishes i use, they are completely food safe, and safe to apply with hands :))

Nice piece, and quite unique. I did find myself wishing you had a bowl saver when you turned it around to chuck the mortise. Lots of beautiful wood there might have been made into a couple of nice smaller ones. (Wish the darn things weren't so pricey!)

@joinerturner makes a very good point, watches and rings should not be worn around anything that spins. I used to do the same but kept getting warning messages from people I changed my ways. Safety first my friend. Nice bowl by the way :)

I have a suggestion!! I’m not sure if it would work!! Using a coring tool, you could have three bowls!!!

I have a suggestion. Instead of gluing your layers of wood together to start why not turn tour first layer and have a ring where you can glue the next layer. then cut out the center with a parting tool. and so on as many layers as you choose. saves all the cutting out of the center. makes a lot less work. You will have small circles to play with after.

you’re not wrong. i did a similar thing in one of my first videos, with the “unsegmented ring” but not quite what you’re suggesting - i like the idea.
