Woodturning Yard Waste Into Functional Art

- My neighbors tree drops these seed pods in my backyard every year. I decided I would try to make something with them instead of just throwing them in the waste bin. I used zebra wood for the end caps and part of the lid. The eye candy Komainu ultracolor shift pigment powder looks absolutely amazing combined with the superclear deep pour epoxy resin. I chose to use Waterlox original for the finish. I had a few firsts in this video. This was my first attempt at making segmented pieces to turn. Also, this is the first time I’ve made a lid for a piece. While overall I am happy with how this piece came out I am not thrilled with the lid. It feels good in the hand but just isn’t as pleasing to the eye. I may go back to this one and make some adjustments to the lid at a later date if something better comes to me. ( I left the tenon on the lid for this reason). I thought I had an original idea with this piece, but after further research I found Sprague woodturning had made a video a while back using these spiky seed pods as well. I’ve had mixed responses about this piece. Some people think it looks amazing and some say creepy. What do you think? Please let me know in the comments below. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a great day!
Special thanks to @GlennMartinPhotography for helping me out with setting up my new camera and giving me the quick and dirty rundown of the basics. Much appreciated mate!

Amazing work
I actually like how the handle looks! Very unique!
a question, what is this object for????
I believe it looks amazing! Thank you for sharing.
Flashback to childhood of finding those pods with bare feet. Very cool looking even if it is made with such an evil seed pod.
LOL!
Anyone who says a Lego is worse has never stepped on a witches burr 😭
You are welcome to come to my yard and take all of the sweetgum seed pods. You may even take the trees as well!
But the trees are so beautiful in the fall 🍁
I’ve never heard of them before, I’m pretty sure we don’t have them here 🇬🇧 I do love acorns, chestnuts, the little spinner seeds, pine cones, thistles…uniquely beautiful
Ps, thank you for telling me what they are 😁have a great day 😁🌸
Theyre beautiful until you try to walk barefoot in your front yard
@@davidmccloud6400 ooof! The thought of that 😫 Lego is evil, those …I have no words. I hate wearing shoes or socks so my very bendy feet are scrunched up protectively 😂
If I was a genie, this is the container I would want to live in. I can't help but imagine ot as a lantern with light from within. Beautiful!
Well that turned out absolutely beautiful! There is nothing like watching a skilled master at his craft. Just a wonderful work of art.
Thank you. Much appreciated. I hope you have a great day
Scott
More than fancy tools, more than the experience and talent to use them, more than your creative imagination even, you have the patience of a saint. This is a priceless work of art.
Incredible!!!
Wow, thank you! It’s easy to have patience when it’s a hobby done for enjoyment. Might be a different story if I was trying to make money selling the things I make. Thank you very much for the kind comment. It’s much appreciated. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
I've used those pods to fill holes in the driveway, but this is so beautiful that im going to show my dad. He works with a lot of wood crafting.
Thank you for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
Such a unique and beautiful jar! I love the warm metallic look to it. This is the best use of sweet gum pods I've ever seen! Thank you for sharing your creative process.
Thank you for watching. Hope you have a great day
Excuse me Mr. S&L but I have to say this is one of my favorite pieces I've seen made before my eyes. I know it is not an urn but I've been searching for a urn for my father for a few years now and haven't been able to find anything I feel is worthy enough to call home for his ashes, but this my friend would be it - lid and all! (wink wink) My Daddio was a craftsman, a man who made everything and took pride in doing so and teaching his daughters to use the tools as well. I'm proud to be my dad's daughter who sat under cars or in the work shop alongside him learning anything and everything he would teach me. And feel like he would be happy in something of that caliber to find his eternal slumber in. Now that you have opened my eyes to this project I know what I am finally looking for. If only I knew how to make one myself, one day maybe I will have my own workshop and be able to make greater things than I do now.... THANK YOU. ✌💜🙃🙏
That’s awesome. I wish you the best of luck. Thanks for watching and I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
My toddler (3 almost 4 years old) and I recently found your channel. We love watching you as part of our wind down time and talking about the colors and shapes you use.
That is awesome. You just won the best comment I’ve received award. 🥇 Thank you for watching and I truly appreciate your support.
Scott
It's beautifully done. Love the way it turned out. That pigment for the resin is superb.
From the shape and size of the container it would make a very nice urn for cremation ashes.
I like it!
Thank you. Appreciate the kind comment. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
ohhhhh....brilliant idea ❤
That color would make a beautiful bowl by itself. The way you made it is gorgeous. Masterful work
Thank you very much! Hope you have a wonderful day!
I haven't seen sweet gum balls in years! So wonderful and nostalgic!
Some people call those gum balls. And some of us call them dingleberries.
We call them Witch burrs for protection spells.
So Beautiful! My Mom would absolutely want this. It reminds me of the when my sister was little and Mom would take us all over the neighborhood to find these in different yards so we could do Summer projects while out of school to keep us busy. We made all kids of things with them. WOW! If only we could have done something like this! Thank you for sharing your creativity with us!
Thank you for sharing. I hope you have a wonderful day!
Scott
Love the color. The pods are great in the crock. Love it🎉👏🏻👍🏼😀
Great use of the sweet gum pods! My neighbor has those trees as well. They are messy but the autumn colors are brilliant. Nice work
When I was a kid one of my chores especially when I got in trouble was to spend a Saturday afternoon picking up these sweet gum pod seeds. When in trouble I was not allowed gloves or a rake but it was hard to use a rake when it was taller than your 3 or 4 year old self. Boy you learn to hate these seed pods. I grew up crafty but I never thought to use something I dislike with a passion because after 3 hours my back and poor tiny hands would be in so much pain but I digress I never thought to use these sweet gum seed pods in a craft to make something so pretty, huzzah to you sir.
Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day!
Scott
Crazy how perfect it turned out.
I used these as a replacement for golf balls to practice my swing.
We had 4 sweet gums on my property growing up. Never ran out of practice balls.
I think this is stunningly beautiful!! My first thought was that it looked like an ancient jar, that was found in an Imperial Chinese tomb, filled with cinnabar.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it. Hope you have a great day!
Scott
I'm glad I watched the whole thing.
So beautiful. I will never see them on the ground again in the same light.
I never thought I could see those foot-murdering things as beautiful. You just changed that for me. 😃🙂
😮 😂😂😂😂 that's a great description for those
I'm watching this in a zen state and living vicariously through you. ☮️
Most beautiful! Love the colour. ❤
Outstanding! I loved these sweet gum pods since a kid! Thanks for sharing your art vision and the amazing process of its unfoldment! Just beautiful!
Thank you so much! Hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
My girl is from Kansas. She had never seen those before so it tripped her out when I took her to Illinois where I'm from. We grew up usin em as projectiles 😂😂😂
Это волшебство! Браво Мастеру!❤
Wow! That is gorgeous! I absolutely LOVED watching you make that!!!
Thank you so much!
Very cool such a different look . Great job can’t wait to see what you do next
Thanks Jim. Appreciated as always sir. Hope you have a wonderful day.
That is absolutely stunning!
I've seen so many of these videos over the years from so many woodturners. You sir are an artist! That's one of, if not the most, beautiful pieces I've ever seen. Fantastic.
Wow, thank you! Really appreciate the kind comment. I hope you have a wonderful day
Scott
One man's trash is another man's treasure and this is definitely a treasure of art it may not have been an original thought process still very unique very cool and very well appreciated.
The thought is one thing the action and ability to move upon that thought is what brings greatness into the world. Thank you sir for your video
Thank you very much, I appreciate it. I hope you have a great day.
Scott
I can see this as a lamp base too! With a light inside! Beautiful work, I would love to learn the lathe one day!
Thank you very much you should go for it. It really is fun. Small tip is that you will likely spend more money on all the needed accessories than the lathe itself, so be prepared. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day.
Scott
Absolutely beautiful work!
Absolutely Stunning! Absolutely Beautiful! Amazing Shop, Amazing Work! Avalon got it right, a True Skilled Master!
Thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
I like that wood tool you used to push the board thru the saw. Seems very safe - and I don’t know why I don’t see it more lol
I think it is stunning and gorgeous!
Absolutely beautiful
I have literally thousands of these in my yard! I'm going to have to try this. Thank you.
Have fun! Thanks for watching. Hope you have a good day!

So pretty!
Thank you! 😊
Great job! 10 plus on creativity!!
I love the creativity and freedom of woodwork! If you can think of it, and you have the tools and skill, you can make it! This is a super cool piece.
Thank you very much. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
That's a very beautiful piece. Love it.
Thank you very much!
Absolutely love it. Well done
Beautiful!!!
Stunningly beautiful piece! And as much as I enjoy learning what tools people use, just having instrumentals with no talking was relaxing and allowed me to really focus on what you were doing.
Thoroughly enjoyed this, thank you!!
Thank you very much! I appreciate it. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
Wow!!!! Brilliant talent & creativity to put so many parts together!!!! Wow! You did amazing 🤩
Thank you for sharing!
Can’t walk into Walmart & just pick one up . Takes years of experience to pull this together! Thank you!!
Thank you so much 🤗. I appreciate the kind words. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
Beautiful piece absolutely love it
Thank you!
Scott
Great piece! Very creative! I love the flow of your process and had no idea those giant wide blade tools were available!
Thanks Barry. I’ve found myself grabbing it more and more often. The negative rake on the cutter performs incredibly well on the resin. There are different shaped cutters that can be installed as well. I have them, but haven’t tried them yet. ( There’s a link in the description if you would like to check them out). Thanks again for watching as always my friend. Hope you have an excellent day sir.
Scott.
So amazing to watch, and such beautiful results, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great day!
Scott
The Best Ever Seen .
Hats Off for Your Imagination 🙏
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Scott
Stunning piece!! Was a joy to watch 😊
Thank you so much!
My grandparents had a sweetgum tree in their yard when I was growing up and I used to love collecting them and chucking them at my brother when we visited. They reminded me of the fuzzles from Oddworld games for some reason
My buddy’s and I had sling shot battles with them. Good memories. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
It’s beautiful, awesome work! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!

Scott
Magnificent piece! I sure enjoyed your video! Thank you!
Thank you very much!
Very beautiful results. ❤
I love it. I have wheelbarrow loads of them in my yard all the time. A real pain to clean up, but great idea you have come up with.
Thanks. They sure do pile up. Glad they are done dropping for the year here. Hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
That is a beautiful piece! Those seed pods are awesome. And I like the lid! I think it looks perfect.

Thank you! I hope you have a great day! Thanks for watching.
Scott
I rake and scoop and burn so many gumballs every spring. This looks awesome
I love this build. I love that eye candy powder, and it went perfect with those pods. Don't knock the segmented wood parts either. I think it's a real piece of art to be proud to display.
Thank you for the kind comments. They are very appreciated. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
So pretty, and unique!
Since so many people think those are a type of maple, you're almost obligated to put maple cookies in that!
Great work, looks beautiful.
Thank you very much!
Have seen the use of the sweet gum seed cones(?) and the use of polygonal shapes (octagon versus decagon) with resin, but you took it to "another level."
Thank you so much. Hope you have a great day!
Good Lord, that's beautiful.
Thank you very much!
The gum tree and its fruits are incredibly medicinal. I make a tincture from the dropped gumballs..it is tamiflu basically and is an amazing healing tree. We have all we need all around us but the connection has been lost.
Nice video ofcourse love watching your art.
Incredible video of a man with an expertly honed talent! Man I could not stop watching because I had to see where this was going. Excellent stuff!!
Wow, thank you! Hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
I have no words, sir. Simply amazing. Reminds of the root beer barrel candy we had as a kid. You are truly gifted my friend. All the best . GJC
I haven’t had one of those candies in decades. You are right, It kind of reminds me of that as well. Thank you so much for the kind words. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
My compliments 🎉!!!! A masterpiece!!!!
Wow, thank you! Hope you have a great day.
Scott
Wow, very nice!
Stunning piece of art work! So beautiful!
Thank you very much!
A very beautiful vase or urn which ever. I have been saving things like that from our family farm for over 80 years. and hope to find someone to make me a beautiful urn from things from the farm, like the pods from the spruce trees that were planted and the pyramid cedar tree leaves. Anyway I just found your channel and its a rainy day so I should catch up on a few shows.
That is a great idea. I wish you the best. Thanks for watching and I hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
That is so beautiful..I would make hanging lamps..put lights in them!
Wow, that is beautiful.
Beautiful piece of work. Absolutely love it.
Thank you very much!
The baby paint roller and paint pan 😍
I’m not a fan of smearing glue around with my fingers. Little roller works really well. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a wonderful day.
Scott
That came out really nice
I really like the lid. The seed pods are the kind of thing that could go either way, but I think they came out great!
Thank you. Much appreciated. Hope you have a great day!
Spectacular! ❤
All the best tools make perfect pieces of art.
👍🏻
That is so awesome!
