In this video I try to improve a 1300 year old design by adding my own twist to the asa no ha kumiko pattern. I used two live edge maple slab cookies and inlaid custom kumiko panels with koi wood mosaic inlays.

The one thing that bugs me about this table, and I think it would've elevated it to the next level, is the kumiko grids don't line up with each other. It'd be harder to get exactly right, but had each grid lined up in a way that it looks like it was originally all one continuous grid, but it's just been separated by the surrounding wood, it would've been very satisfying to the eye.

I have to say I am in love with this table, I think the Koi fish made with different woods and using the epoxy fill to outline them was stunning. The little flowers actually remind me of Chrysanthemum flowers which hold deep symbolism in Japanese art as well. It’s an emblem of the imperial family and are symbols of good health and longevity. So one could say you are wishing anyone who eats as this table a healthy and long life. The brass resin inlay on the legs it’s just subtle enough to be a fun detail for people to notice and point out for others. I myself am currently putting in the reps while I am practicing my hand stitching while working on sewing a vintage garment. Love putting on a long playlist of other makers to just watch while doing the repetitive task of hand seaming.

What I really respect is your ability to stop. When I create something artistic or crafty, I find myself wanting to tweak it, or add one more thing, or adjust something, or study and shift the design for weeks before gluing it down and calling it done.
You spoke of looking at finished projects and thinking you would have done something different. That's good, because you can keep those ideas in mind for your next build.
I appreciate your channel, and look forward to seeing what you come up with next.

"Put in the reps" is so true - you will never get better without trying (and failing) at pretty much anything.
A very useful tip (possibly already in the comments) I picked up for the brass powder is to turn it upside down - Fill in the area that you want to, then tape over it and turn it upside down. This will mean that all the heavy brass powder will now be at the top when you flip it back over.
The table looks great - I think you have taken a nice technique and added something very positive to it.

Put in the reps. The non spoken motto of my life as a father of a multi disabled daughter (both mentally and physically handicapped/disabled). Fight, work, cry, succeed, smile, repeat...... Repeat, repeat, repeat.
A dangerous motto, if you do not know how (or have the opportunity) to put in some rest every now and then. I did not put in enough rest, did not have enough success and smile along the years, so after 17 years I fell severely ill with stress.
Now, another 3,5 years in, with my daughter living in very nice facility for disabled youth instead of at home, I am better, but still not capable of having a job.
I enjoy watching your creative process, and I get inspired to do a little woodworking myself. I like working with wood, but I tend to forget its healing power and thus only do it infrequently.
Nice table. I think, your take on kamiko is just as nice as any other. I personally think, the koy inlays are a bit too much/too big on this one, taking away too much attention from the kamiko... . but who cares, what I think?
Your wife loves it, at she is your most important spectator 👍👍👍. The only other important part in this project than yourself. You need to like it, not me. So congratulations on your new dining table.
    Stay safe!

Put in the reps. I ❤it. I identify as an artist that likes the feel of wood. I have never been happier than sanding and refinishing an antique door. I have not made a table but if I ever get there, I want to build this table. For our 10th anniversary my husband and I booked a 1 week / 8 hour a day course building dinning room chairs, with no power tools. From cutting down the tree, steam bending backs to turning on a lathe made from cord and a piece of ironwood, I feel at home with wood. Awesome video an project! Thank you! A couple tips: 1) For the brass powder/resin pour, consider laying down and clamping a very thin sheet of plexiglass and flipping it over. That will allow the brass to settle to your outside surface. 2) for your large resin pours, you mentioned bubbles are a concern. Consider clamping a drill with an off-set weight to the edge of the table after the pour. The vibrations should bring up many of the large bubbles to the surface.

I think you did an excellent job of enhancing the ancient Japanese design. I think you did great working in the Koi fish to match the cabinet you previously made. This will look great together. You definitely add your own creative flare to the projects you make. You really do have to "trust the process" not just in woodworking, but in all types of making. I make candles and handmade ornaments for various holidays and sometimes, I have to remind myself to trust the process and wait for the end result. Your furniture always turns out looking great, even when there are hiccups during the making of the project.

I'm an artist and it took me so long to learn to * trust the process *. I put in the reps (30+ years worth) but because I would stop half way through, worried I'd make it worse if I kept going, and not trusting myself to be as skilled as I am now, I think I took longer to level myself up than I should have. So a third thing I would suggest is be confident in yourself because you can always start over.

Very beautiful and unique works that you make!

Put in the Reps! I've been struggling in my artistic process lately. My Cricut keeps eating my designs and I was getting discouraged when the local vendor group didn't pick me to vend for their pride event. I did a little crafting with friends on Discord and was able to stay motivated. Your work is amazing and sometimes you gotta mess up to find the final form. Trust the process.

Creative process helps you develop your own personal style, developing your reputation as an artist; as artists seek out new inspiration over the years they may generate more than one signature style too. So there’s this double entendre of “putting in the reps” into your work; the repetitions and ultimately the reputations you’ll be recognized by. Beautiful work!

Love the build! Just wanted to say that on the cold casting, you can polish the cold cast brass and it'll shine up pretty nice. Also, I've found that cold casting anything can introduce lots of bubbles, so vac chambering helps. That said, I was doing this on artisan mechanical keyboard keycaps at a smaller scale, and often with urethane resin instead of epoxy, and not embedded in wood... so your mileage will most definitely vary. But wanted to mention it as there are some surface treatments with cold casting that may yield some interesting results. Best of luck!

"Put in the reps" makes sense to me. I've been told that I'm good at art, and other things, but I've bee making art for a long time, drawing any time an idea comes to mind, or when i'm bored and so on, it's not like I was BORN able to draw as well as i do now. Just like learning to walk, talk, write, ride a bike, roller-skate, and even driving takes practice, so does any kind of artwork or making craft that you find yourself in. You might not become #1 at whatever it is over night, but that's fine. It's part of the process of life, learning and improving as you go. So long as you learn a little bit about it every day and keep trying you'll eventually get there. Don't give up, put in the reps, and trust the process. We're all living the process every day, if you learn a little each step that's the best thing you can do for yourself. Just take it a step at a time, learn as you go, and you'll reach your destination, and have a story to tell about the trip you took to get to where you are.

To make it even better, I would add KAMICO where the plain black epoxy is. Thus, there will be no place on the table without some wood in it.

put in the reps. I love watching you build. I grew up in a 'we make our own furniture" house. Father was a woodworker / carpenter / President of the American Wood Carvers Assoc. I miss making furniture with my Dad, the smell of the wood, the pride of a job well done. Watching your videos is very calming and enlightening - I've only ever used epoxy as a glue, now it is a material for building. Love it. Keep on going Marine!

The Classic car reference was funny to listen too. Just the other week my wife and I were talking about that because my daughter is getting ready to drive. When I turned 18 I got a 1967 Mustang and at the time the car was 25 years old. I just bought my kid a 2000 Audi TT for her first car and next year it will be 25 years old. The difference is amazing between the 2. Her classic car has AC, power steering, independent suspensions, a full radio system, airbags, etc. FYI I still have the Mustang and yes the kiddo will get it....eventually =) Now my Mustang is like the Model-T's back when I got my car =)

What I love about this channel is how Jonny claims that it’s important not to put too many different details into one design, and then he makes the craziest design ever with so many details! Definitely not a minimalist approach! 😂 Although not a style that could mach with my preferences and home, I think this is a bloody awesome table. Seeing this Japanese-inspired period unfolding and documented in video is pretty cool, too. It makes me wonder how makers, artists, designers etc develop their styles. Putting in the reps?

Great build. Love the design. You put a lot of thought into it and certainly ties into the buffet table. Probably felt a relief that the legs turned out. Would agree with you it is a bit narrow for a dining table, but the fact you have the buffet if could work. You can use that to stage food etc. nice work.
