So let's talk about misusing resin, because that's exactly what I demonstrated in this video. Deep pours of this size require active cooling to avoid thermal cracking, and I really had no idea what I was getting into with this one other than that I fully anticipated that the resin would crack. I was not prepared for just how much cracking would take place, and I think that alone made the project much more difficult. I was also warned by a SuperClear representative that their resin is known to chip in woodturning applications, but I think the chip-out was exacerbated by all the extra voids left from the thermal cracking. In the end, the results speak for themselves, and I think all that extra work was worth it for a truly unique poisonous cauldron! Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoyed me experimenting with a new (to me) fog machine!
I'm not the first to coat burls in contrast-color epoxy before casting in resin, but this was my first attempt to emphasize the natural edges of the burl using glow pigments in epoxy. I also attempted to use glow pigments in the casting resin, but as expected, the glow powder drifts to the bottom of the mold and most of the pigment was lost. This was also the heaviest blank I have ever turned, coming close to 80 lbs. Fortunately, there's a nice core blank for a future project!

THAT is a really cool piece of tooling, and I am glad that someone makes such things. Saves you time, and gives you a smaller blank to turn into something, from the same piece. Nice!!

But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.
Love how you can take a huge chunk of burl, cut it up, glue it up, add epoxy and colors and make it something incredibly unique. The vision you have is awesome and so much fun to watch you coax it out of the wood. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks Wilbur, yes quite a bit of off-camera work went into this. I probably only filmed a third of the work and then edited down about 8-9 hours of footage down to 17 minutes.

The work, time & creativity you invest is prodigious...I was curious if you FEEL intensely positive...emotions as you work?
I ask because my favourite definition of "High/Fine Art" is, simply, "That which makes those who view it feel INTENSE emotion."
Further to that, I believe for emotion to be FELT at that point, the work itself was imbued with emotion during the creative process.
Be it a song or a voice making the hair on the nape of my neck stand up...or a dance routine which transports me to a state of awe...or a work of Art...I love beauty and the FEELING I get gazing at a VIDEO*¹ of your finished piece is...indescribable.
*As tech invariably REDUCES the emotional resonance of a piece: in that the intensity of emotion FELT BY one who views, say, an image in a video...or a photograph on a screen...or a poster...a high quality limited edition proof...an artist's proof...culminating with the ORIGIONAL...that emotion ratchets up in intensity as the veils of technology are removed.
To see your finished work in the "fibre" must be incredible.
I hope ~ but doubt ~ you arranged a voice or video call such that you could enjoy your client's reaction when they FIRST saw the result of their commission. I REALLY enjoy seeing (or hearing) the emotional reaction to my work...and the artists i support get a kick out of my reactions.
As a power-carver and fellow woodworker, all I can say is that I am incredibly impressed with your work in general, and your work here specifically. In power-carving, if I screw up I simply keep going because you never know how mistakes become advantageous later. Not that it matters, but I am proud of you for sticking with this one and hanging in there till the end instead of giving up and moving on. I literally just put my lathe together Sunday, and haven’t even used it yet. Partly because I want to watch more videos before hand, and partly out of confusion of where to start. Watching you gives me something to strive towards. I am not interested in selling, but I AM interested in making beautiful things for my wife, and maybe a few family members, if they’re lucky, 😂. I've been binge-watching all these wood-turning videos on different CZcams channels for the last few days. I just find them satisfying to watch. No narration, no video graphics, just hands creating masterpieces.
That has to be so gratifying after putting in so much work. It's probably the most beautiful woodworking I've seen. I really appreciated that you used the wood that you cut off in the beginning. Manzanita is so beautiful and I don't think it's used enough in woodworking. It grows all over Northern CA, where I'm from. Hope you got a pretty penny for it. And slow-mo is awesome and the cinematography, especially at the end, is incredible. I suspect you might be a perfectionist, lol.
I love the “drama” of slow motion. Considering The Slow Mo Guys have 14.5M subs I’m guessing other people do too. This piece is incredible, the glowing cracks and tinted epoxy are beautiful together. The rootball is gorgeous and all of it combined is absolutely amazing. Thanks so much for sharing all of your hard work, heavy lifting and enormous talent with all of us!

Love the slow motion. Haven’t done lathe work since high school and it brought the impact of the rough turning on the hands and arms right back. It’s good to show how physical this is. Also caused some anxiety as I was worried your chisel was going to catch and flip . Our shop room had a huge gauge in the chalkboard across the shop from the lathe stations from a flipped chisel. It was the first lesson in the lathe training!

Easily one of the wildest things I've ever seen come off a lathe. It has been a pure joy watching your skills grow over the last couple of years. ( I subbed after seeing your yellow birch pedestal bowl. I think you were in the 1K range at the time.) And not just your turning skills, but your videography as well. Although, I have to admit that the slow mo always makes me a bit nervous as well.

What can I say that hasn’t been said? That is pretty cool. I am always amazed at the new things people are trying on their wood lathes, but this is the best I have seen yet. You even managed to save the center for a small bowl. I love it!

It got me thinking about the fact that digital artists, those expert in computer graphics are possibly thought of as at the cutting edge of creating beautiful or unusual images, but seeing your films it shows that the ancient crafts, the timeless crafts such as working with wood are so much more beautiful. The way the natural object changes and evolves in the hands of the craftsman is mesmeric and deeply satisfying at a gut level.
That certainly brightened up this rainy Sunday on the West Coast of Scotland 😊

At least he didn’t have to pay for the resin (I would think), or that would have cost in the neighborhood of $450-$500, just in the epoxy resin!
