- Thank you so much to all of you, and thank to all my new subscribers! This is my 17th video project, and it was quite a doozy. The yellow birch log had been harvested about a year and a half ago, but in spite of scoring the bark to prevent rot damage, the wood was very punky an almost impossible to finish. I fully expect it to check and crack, given the pith inclusion, but this piece is meant to be rustic. Between finishing the piece and taking the video montage at the end, I let the base soak in mineral oil for about 3 days until I noticed that the piece no longer floated to the surface of the oil. I did so because I noticed some dry spots on the finish where the wood was soaking up the oils and wax quickly. Once this piece settles out, I will apply an final coat of wax to help seal the piece and protect the finish.
I hope you enjoyed this process! Thanks for stopping by!

That sucks that you lost the live edge, but you created a beautiful bowl. No one would know it wasn't the original plan of you hadn't shared that with us. But I'm grateful you did, problem solving and perseverance are great qualities. It's a great lesson when I show videos like this to my kids.
Thank you so much! It's important to share the journey and at least some of the stumbles along the way! Cheers!
From the moment you pointed out the bark in the tenon I was on the edge of my seat waiting for tragedy. That is my worst fear. (Flying wood).
Nice save and recovery of the piece.
Sometimes the wood tells us what it's going to be. Nice work.
The wood, your skill turning it, the pieces you create, the music and the videography are stunning. The gimmicky, comic exclamations really jarred with that. Keep the faith, go with what you do best.
Gorgeous is all I can say!!! "KEEP ON TURNING"
David, this is your best work yet. Truly. You are a gifted artist. Well done, friend.
Dan, thank you so much! I put plenty of blood, sweat, and tears into it, thatâs for sure! đ»
That turned out amazing as usual. Iâve really enjoyed going back and watching all your previous videos. The turnings are great, and the videography is wonderful too.
You donât show the finished piece long enough. They are so beautiful and unique. We love looking at the finished art.
you showing us the beauty of the wood structure!!! Thank you,!!
Beautiful piece David. Can't beat spalted, decaying wood for wild grain and colors. Thanks for sharing your great work.
Thank you very much, Brent!
I love it when the incredible beauty of wood is displayed with such elegance and care. Especially birch. Magnificent.
Thank you very much!
The imagination to visualize is a gift from above. Your level of tool control is a product of knowledge, experience, patience and desire to produce an item that is the best it can be. Your work is the best I have seen and it did not require a $6,000 lathe.
David, your artistry is the work of a true artist.
I am enjoying your work; I appreciate the fact that you let imperfections in the wood stay rather than filling them with resin. Now sometimes resin is a nice touch, but to use it on everything, takes away from the natural character of the wood, great work Brother.
THAT ONE FOUGHT YOU, AND YOUR DETERMINATION PAID OFF IN SPADES!!! EXCELLENT WORK!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR TIME AND TALENT WITH US!!!
Thanks so much! I appreciate your comment!
Stunning as always. I just love your edits and your work.
Thank you very much, Amy! Cheers!
Was skipping around wood turners on the other night and all I can say is WOW!! Your work in breathtakingly beautiful. What an eye and a gift you have. Thank you for sharing your enjoyment..
As usual David, no disappointment on finished turn. Colors r great, shape nice!! Thanks again 4 sharing, WE r the lucky ones!
High-level artwork...
I love your work....đ
Thank you, Kerajinan! I appreciate that! Same to you. đ
Just... beautiful. I think (and hope) that those who pressed the "unlike" button were only doing it by mistake.
Thank you for bringing joy to our eyes, David.
Thank you so much!
That African Black Wood is breath taking!!!!
Iâm usually so hypnotized into what youâre doing until the unexpected, âMANY UNBEARABLE HOURS LATERRRâŠâ đ đ€Ł Great work, thank you for sharing your craft.
That a very beautiful bowl. The African Blackwood finiel really pops.
Thank you so much!
Another stunning piece David! It is when we take the greatest risk that we receive the biggest reward! Don't stop trying new things, techniques, and ideas. You are truly an incredible artist.
Margaret, thank you very much! I appreciate that. The journey is what counts, and we can't get there without stumbling! But it's always worth the learning experience to try new things! Cheers!
I have never seen yellow birch before. It is quite beautiful. I mourned the live edge but the bark inclusion is awesome. You still made a magnificent bowl. I like that you share the turning in its entirety as we see your talent abound even in mishap. The intricacies are outstanding. You are blessed with an incredible talent.
The contrast of the two woods is amazing. â€
Well this is what perseverance brings David that looks fabulous
Thanks so much Steve!
Beautiful, David!
Thanks so much, Rod!
I knew you were amazing with a bowl gouge, but apparently you do great spindle work too! Your perseverance with this piece really paid off.
Thank you!
OMG!!!! I'll stay for hours and hours looking at you while creating....it's hypnotic. A piece of art, thank-you for sharing
Thanks so much, Eliana!
Positively beautiful. I shuddered a bit at how much of the African Blackwood was reduced to shavings, but you found stunning beauty with the finial. Well done young man!
Thank you so much, Stuart! I agree with you there. I don't like wasting such amazing wood, but hopefully I've done it justice. Cheers!
You are a genius with wood!
Thanks, Wendy, I appreciate you!
Another superb example of the creative wood turner's craft. It looks so well planned at each step as the shape emerges from a knot of tree trunk.
Thank you so much! Cheers!
Our Lord All Mighty has given you a special touch to make pieces of wood into something so beautiful. đđČ
What a work of art. Your talented amazes me. Every piece of wood I see in the beginning, is just a piece of wood, you make it into an incredible piece of artistry. You are a master at your craft. Your Australian fan.đŠđș
Thank you so much, Sue! I really appreciate that! I'm still and always learning! Cheers!
Very nice recovery, I always marvel at your gouge control! Awesome and thanks again from MT.
Thank you very much, I really appreciate that!
In addition to the superb craftmanship, your videography is excellent.
THAT BOWL is simply Exquisite .
This is a very beautiful bowl David. The spalding is definitely fantastic. Also the finial is nothing but perfect for the bowl.
Thank you so much, Richard! The finial was somewhat of a lucky experiment. I wanted to figure out a design that utilized more of the wood and yet did not seem bulky to the eye. Cheers!
What a beautiful piece you turned Dave. So much talent!
Thank you! I really appreciate that! Always learning!
I would love to see the pieces you cut off being used for another project.
Very cool bowl. But the knob on the lid will break away very easy.
You were just excellent at what you do. I am a beginner. 55-year-old woman taking up the lathe for about a month now, but I am enjoying it. I will probably never be as professional as you are but dang it. Iâm gonna give it one heck of a try. Absolutely gorgeous work.
I have never used a lathe and I'm not good at using wood apart from basic stiff like an architrave but hardly the work of an artisan.
Thank you for uploading this.
To seeds gifted craftsman, an artisan make, something so beautiful is amazing.
It is a good and wholesome thing to watch.
So much depressing thing in the world and negative activity but you made something and shared it with the world to see.
Things well made and made with love skill and passion is so good.
Wow thank you very much, Steven. I truly appreciate it. That is one reason I love woodturning... it gets me away from all the hubbub and noise and engages the mind. At times, it is not the relaxing process I try to convey on video, but itâs a learning experience, which is always beneficial!
That is a great looking piece. I love love love that finial
Thank you so much, Tim!
Talk about dedication-you have created a masterpiece, and never loss sight. You stayed focused the entire time you were creating this amazing artwork. This is so gorgeous, itâs absolutely stunning. Everything is perfect 100%! The finial moves this up another level, Kudos to you! Bravo!!
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!
I really enjoy your videos. I watch them to calm down laying down before I fall asleep. I also love that you can see so much of your personality from the edits of your videos but mostly from your work.
):
This is so relaxing to watch and the music is helping me fall asleep faster
Thanks Liam! Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazingly beautiful đđ»đ«đ„°âŒïž I love the lighter and darker woods together đđ»âŒïž
The first piec in the video is really, really excellent.
Thanks!
Wonderful piece of work , and love the Blackwood finial really does finish it off . When a piece flies off the lathe some people give up on it . Just goes to show if you donât give up on it , the rewards you can get when itâs finished .
Thank you so much! I couldn't agree more. I have to admit that having an audience certainly adds to my motivation to complete each piece. Persevering to the end is the least I can do to acknowledge my gratitude for all the support!
Gorgeous bowl! You have to love spalted birch. If you can get it to stay together itâs amazingly beautiful wood.
Thank you so much, Duane! This piece will definitely check a bit, but it will still be beautiful. đ€©
Beautiful work. Not so sure about the lid but it's also very well done. The only thing missing from this video is Roy Scheider, cigarette dangling from his mouth saying I think we need a bigger lathe.đŠ
Thanks! Glad someone got the reference.
One word "STUNNING".
Thank you, Pat!
Great job as alwaysđ„
watching the African black wood turning was so satisfying. thank you for sharing the whole process, Iâm learning from you David đđ»đ
Thank you so much! Iâm learning too!
Great looking piece David and a nice save! Shape is wonderful, very well done my friend!
Thank you so much, Jordan!
A mortise was definite best to do. Your art work is absolutely stunning. Thank you for your wonderful gift of sharing your masterpiece. Merveilleux!
I love the sounds of the tools combine with the soft music
The negative space you created on the finial is an awesome touch. I'm going to have to practice that!
Thank you very much, Al!
This bowl looks magnificent!! I LOVE IT!!!!
Thank you so much, Texana!
There is so much going on with this piece! It's a real feast for the eyes... combining different wood types is another cool aspect to like! Nicely done sir!
David as a fellow turner from Maine also my hat off to you you have incredible talent and an excellent eye that peice has me in awe I have no words just BEAUTIFUL!!!đđđ
What a beautiful piece of wood David. Your shape really brought the beauty to its best. Amazing job!
Every thing about it is spectacular.
Great work my friend,
Gary
Thank you so much, Gary! đ»âïžI fully expect it to check, and it has a little bit, but that is no surprise given the pith in both sides. Cheers, my friend!
If it does they will be beauty marksâș
We just had our Sybrian Elm trimmed way down. I have lots of green would to turn and figure I will end up with some cracks. I even have some with small burls covering it.
I will find out soon.
Take care
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 That sounds fantastic! Can't wait to see your artistry at work on them!
I think it ended up prettier than originally intended. Interesting what the wood makes you do.
Thanks so much, Fred!
Wow beyond amazing. Love how you kept some the bark as part of the beauty of the project
Hi David, I'm 'next door' in NS in the Annapolis Valley across the Bay of Fundy. I'm about to get into woodturning in my elder years. Yesterday, a salesman at a machine store in Halifax, who said he's been a turner for more than 40 years, suggesting putting a 2" X 10" on the shelf below the bed, then loading it with 1500 lbs of sandbags to dampen the vibration from out of round wood pieces. You have that empty shelf on your Jet, so it may be a very inexpensive option, before springing for a new machine.
Another suggestion from me is to create on the bandsaw, a simple circle jig with a piece of ply or MDF, and a central line at 90° inline with the teeth. Drill a hole for a 3" or 4" nail as a turning fulcrum and spin the blank 'round that, which, will eliminate much of the wobble and shorten the time to rough down the blank. Many holes can be drilled and the distance labelled for re-use.
I also viewed a Danish video where the turner was using an old refrigerator as a kiln, heated with an incandescent 100W lightbulb, slatted shelves to hold blanks, [both rough turned to 1" and unturned] two 3" holes at the bottom with 1/4" ply covers for air inlets and a hole at the top again with a 1/4" ply cover on a single swivel screw, to let the moist air out, once the blanks have been equalized for 10 days or so. He also drilled a small hole for the light cord. I guess when you have little money, inventiveness is the mother of curiosity. hahaha
I absolutely love your work, how it's presented in the videos, with the accompanying music, explanations, finishing materials etc. Keep up the great work. Thanks so much. đ

You make it look easy
Well, it was a heart-stopper for a second, and then it was hours of torturous sanding... I was definitely worth it!
Watching you work is like attending a beautifully choreographed ballet. The moves are so fluid and the music peaceful that I feel relaxed just watching. And each piece is better than the last. There are no mistakes - only learning opportunities - as Iâve found after 30 years of throwing pottery. Each video is a gift and a balm to my soul!
Beautiful coloring. A real gem.
Thank you! âïž
Wow David thatâs amazing. Where can a guy from NorCal find a piece of wood like that. Great work. Thank you from all of your viewers.
Thank you I really appreciate that! Tbh, I salvaged this and other logs from fallen trees in my area.
This is the best I've seen yet!! I appreciate your artistry!!
Thanks Greg! âïž
Never heard of Yellow Birch before, but brother , you knocked it out of the park on this one ? See Ya ,Texas
Thanks so much!
I find your videos soothing!
The music goes well with the work being done!
Such breathe taking exquisite work!
Very beautiful, David! Great job as always!
Thank you so much, Mike!
The bowl is absolutely beautiful.
Thanks Tandy!
Awesome !!!!! Beautiful creationđđđ . Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
You have angelâs hands. So beautiful. I would love to own a piece of your work. đ„°
Beautiful work, most impressive, I really enjoyed watching the video, thank you very much!
Thank you, Yossi! I really appreciate that!
Beautiful project. Again, had me guessing til the end. Amazing finial work.
Thanks Glen!
Exquisite, as always. Most tasteful! Eye candy for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
unlike many you tubers you actually read the comments and reply. beautiful work and you have a new subscriber.
Thanks so much, Chris! I appreciate you!
Absolutely beautiful. Love the African black wood. For me the handle on top was a bit to large it detracts from the bowl. I love the use of the black wood to bring out the spalting. Just my input. Thank you for sharing again beautiful piece.
Thanks very much for your comment! I appreciate it!
It turned out well David. Esp. considering the problems you had to overcome. Good job đđ
Thank you so much! Cheers!
Ok. Now I see. You were not finished making a lid. That is gorgeous !
Thank you CZcams algorithm. I've made wood furniture, but never used a lathe. Absolutely fascinating. Beautiful work
Thank you, Chris!
Excellent work David! Really enjoy your videos. Keep them coming.
Thank you so much, John! I appreciate you watching!
Hi David, Amazing bowl from an amazing piece of wood. The finial is just gorgeous. Cheers, Huw PS Great save. Huw
Thank you so much, Huw!
A lot of work and time went into this piece but worth every minute! Beautiful piece.
You are a real artist and craftsman.
Thanks George!
Also yes, you need a larger lathe - it makes quite a difference with the added weight and speed control. I love my powermatic 3520b (and hear the new C is great), but if I could get anything now it would be either a robust or vicmarc
Yeah, my dream lathe is the Robust American Beauty. Weâll see. The Laguna 2436 looks pretty good too.
@@DavidAdamsen Try the new Nova
That was a great video...learned a fair bit about mortises instead of tenons...and it turned into a beautiful lidded bowl at the end...well done!
Thanks so much! Same here!
Breathtakingly beautiful. Actually beyond beautiful. I really admire you and your work.
My Father was a machinist, I grew up in his machine shop. When I wasn't helping directly I was standing out of the way just watching. I get some of those same familiar feelings of awe and admiration watching your videos. Great choice of music as well, but it's the spinning of the lathe and the tooling on wood that brings the Zen. Thank you, Adam.
Thank you so much, Seti, I really appreciate that!
Oops! I meant David! LOL Sorry, man :)
turned out beautiful david . real work of art . sometimes you have to trow it on the ground a few times lol . show it whos boss lol . great work my friend .
Thank you so much, Dark! Cheers!
Another awesome piece! Great work! Keep up the video's and soon enough JET will sponsor you one, your work shows you deserve it!
Thank you, Robert! Hmm, interesting!
đ»
I LOVE the against the grain cut on this bowl. Also like the contrast between the rustic base and the perfect looking handle ⊠absolutely gorgeous â€ïž
Your taste in music is outstanding, My Brother. The creativity of your woodworking skills is exceptional. And the handpiece or handgrip or whatever you would call it, for that lid, was STUNNING! Absolutely, took my breath away. That alone, was a masterpiece!!
My Best. Out.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Your wood combinations are spot on brother! I love how happy accidents turn into an amazing work of art. Great job David. Have a blessed week. - Ed
Thank you so much, my friend! Cheers, and you as well!
Well, that was unfortunate, David! But the grain and character from the spalting were just too pretty to give up on and I'm glad you didn't! Lovely piece for sure. And thank you so much for the shoutout!
Billy
Thanks Billy! Glad to know woodturners like you! Hopefully it will draw in some traffic to your channel! Cheers and all the best!
This "urn" is just as awesome as that other one with the pedestal and tall finial!!! That wood grain is out of this world !!!! One spot looks almost metallic. BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Thank you so much John!
So skilled. What a joy to watch the art of wood turning . Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent. Jose from Melbourne . Australia
