JetExec Turbine Startup Procedure - Narrated
I've had a lot of people over the years ask for this, so frankly, I'm overdue! The startup procedure for turbines is always an intimidating one until you get used to it. Here I attempt to describe my process as I go through a startup. It happens fast, so you might need to watch it a few times!
I then went out and practiced a bunch of autorotations and quick stops and then took a leisurely flight around the nearby lake. Maybe I'll edit that video sometime too. :-)

The nearby highest peak is Mount Ascutney at 3144 feet. Clouds were broken at roughly the same height, so we took a flight out to it and stayed just under the broken ceiling. • @Aerohead
      @Aerohead Před 3 dny

      Not from Rotor X, no. They are out of business. But honestly, I never felt like I needed any parts from them. There's a huge community of people helping each other out, making parts, etc. and none of the JetExec specific parts ever had anything to do with RotorX anyway. Elastomeric bearings and such are really the only big "consumable" that people need, and already several sources have popped up to supply us, same as the original ones that were supplied to RotorX.

    • @Aerohead
      @Aerohead Před 12 dny

      It's good! It's been a year and a half now since this one, and last summer I officially got my check ride and license in June. Flew about 35 hours last summer, and I think 20 or so so far this summer. No mechanical issues to deal with during that time, and I've just been flying and carrying passengers. I definitely only fly in good weather though - I don't risk high winds or rain or anything, so if I was relying on it for commuting, I'd be a little nervous. 120 mile round trip should be fine for a single tank with plenty of reserve, so no problems there. Operating costs on these are basically oil and fuel and hangar rental. Almost everything is on-condition and you might need to swap elastomeric bearings every couple hundred hours, but they aren't spendy. I'd say your 120 mile trip would cost about $100-150 all in.

    That's good to know. I like this JetExec chopper's spec except for the hour range, but keep hearing how difficult it is to get parts for the T62-32 engines built back in the 60's. I heard there were up grades in 2014, so if I got a JetExec kit, put out in 2009, it looks impossible to get whatever upgrades were made after that date.

    • @Aerohead
      @Aerohead Před 4 měsíci

      It should have over 2 hr range - it burns 15 gph with passenger and has a 40 gallon tank. There have been upgrades, and in fact I've been working on doing those upgrades for several others the last couple years. They are definitely easy to get, we just make them to order. Again, none of this ever went through the factory anyway, so nothing changed there when it closed.

    • @ginginthing
      @ginginthing Před 4 měsíci

      Sounds like the JetExec community is solid on sharing info and keeping everyone flying. I'm trying to get a handle on a fair price for a 2009 jetExec kit. It's suppose to be 30% complete, but after building several experimental fixed wings, I've found that most inexperienced builders underestimate the amount of time it takes to build certain airplane kits. But it sounds like this chopper kit doesn't require a lot of time since it's mostly a bolt together. His -32 is suppose to be a fresh zero time rebuild. No avionics. I didn't see any doors in the pictures. Kit has been in a hanger. Not sure how long jet engines can sit without needing replacement bearings etc. Asking 86, but will negotiate. I have many questions on this kit. Since it's winter now, my first question is, do these have an option for a cabin heat from bleed air? @@Aerohead

    • @Aerohead
      @Aerohead Před 4 měsíci

      @@ginginthing All good questions, and I have helped some people in purchasing or upgrading their ships in the past, so I'm happy to have a conversation if you want. Feel free to send me an email, AeroheadG8, at Gmail. For the heater, I think the most common is to use a Webasto or Espar or similar and just run it off a gallon of diesel - they run forever on that, and are thermostatically controlled and everything, so it works well. I haven't installed one yet, but I've been eyeing it for a while, might do it this year.

    • @ginginthing
      @ginginthing Před 4 měsíci

      Thx Aerohead for the reply. The next big hurtle is apparently, a helicopter endorsement. I have had a private license for over 50 years. Since I was an A&P mechanic maintaining a flight school, I got my license for the price of fuel, which was at $1.50/gal at the time or around 500 total. That's almost what these schools are asking for per hour of dual training in a chopper. With my current third class fixed wing, I would only need 30 hours but still, they should be able to retire off of one pilots student training. Are there any CFI's that train in these JetExecs or Rotorway recips, or use simulators to help cut down on costs? This kind of takes the fun out of flying your own experimental chopper, and may be a show stopper for me at almost 10k for a privates on a chopper. @@Aerohead

    • @Aerohead
      @Aerohead Před 4 měsíci

      @@ginginthing Yep, there sure are. I trained in my own helicopter, with a CFI in the right seat. They charge much less per hour than you'd expect a flight school to charge to use their helicopter. I can definitely connect you with some of them. @josephpriolo1514 is one of them.

Might go back looking for a Mosquito.

    • @Aerohead
      @Aerohead Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah, unfortunately RotorX is currently out of business. The JetExec was never directly supported by them anyway, just the parts it shares with the piston version. There's talk of them changing ownership and coming back online but nothing concrete yet.

In our experimental world, we all help each other and we're in charge of making sure it's safe to fly. There's enough of an active community to keep us all flying anyway.

    • @Aerohead
      @Aerohead Před 6 měsíci

      Hello! Thanks for watching! My fuel burn is around 13 gph solo and 15 gph with a passenger. It has a 40 gallon tank. The VNE is 115 mph, and a comfortable cruise speed is 90-100. Any repairs you'd need to do on the turbine really aren't costly. The whole turbine unit only costs around $10k, but it's very hardy, so shouldn't need repairs within the life of the helicopter. Other parts are generally more of the concern.
