What can I expect for my helicopter checkride? - Practice Session, Rotorway JetExec

  • Only a couple days remain until I take my private pilot checkride in my helicopter! So during this week of training with the incredible Mark Peterson (www.airmarkhelo.com), we decided to do a full hour demonstration of the checkride. We go through the primary maneuvers we'd expect to see and Mark stays as hands off as possible.
    I decided to upload the full hour of this because it could prove quite useful to someone else preparing for their checkride!

    You have a nice ship and very good PT, Adam. So sad about Mark. He reminded me of Emil "Chuck" Shreiber at Kansas Copters.

    Love the videos, good luck on the checkride, audio directly from the headsets would be nice if possible..

      Thanks! Checkride is tomorrow, looking forward to it! And yes, that audio is headset audio. You're actually hearing two tracks of audio here - the first is from the external camera, which does a good job of capturing the engine sounds and the blade sounds, which I think is pretty crucial. The second though is direct from the intercom. I do my best to balance the two - for instance, the one from the headset needs some heavy high frequency filtering or you'd struggle to make out what we're saying. It sounds good in person, but hard to make out conversation in the video over the high pitched whine of the engine. And of course my headset has noise cancelling which comes "downstream" of the audio spliced into the GoPro. I'm trying to get better at it all the time. I think better filtering might help. Appreciate the comment!

    I see this with Mark now. So horrible about his passing last week. Is there any other instructor in the U.S. as knowledgeable as Mark was with the Rotorway/ Rotor-X airframe?

      As knowledgeable as Mark? Probably not, that's a very high bar, but there's definitely a strong community and others who can teach. We lost one of our best, no doubt.

    Great video, Adam. Wish I could have heard the conversation. What are the names of the avionics you are using, display, radio etc?

      I have a Stratomaster Odysset EFIS, but I don't think they make those anymore, they have a smaller Enigma version that I think is the most current. The rest of my gauges are MGL or MicroAir

    How many hours does your unit have? Im interested in purchasing one but the negativity is getting to me.

      Just replied on the other one. 94 hours as of yesterday. If you're looking to get one of these, you have to be the kind of person who trusts your own abilities (flight and mechanic) enough to push through the negativity. Or have the patience to get yourself to that point.
      I didn't originally, but over the years I got that confidence. If you buy one already built, you should make sure you do a lot of research and come up to speed on how the whole machine works so you can inspect and work on it yourself.
