July 13 (iPad and Ableton Live - Samplr, Patterning 3, AUM)
for details on how this track was made, please visit my Substack page for a full writeup: andrewtasselmyer.substack.com/p/studio-diary-july-13-2024
This is an improvisation featuring 3 layers of the same sampled piano note. I am playing back small portions of it in Samplr on iPad, then processing it on a second bus channel with various lo-fi effects in AUM.
Patterning 3 and Audiomodern Playbeat are adding percussion, effected by various filters, delays, and glitch effects. Fugue Machine is sequencing 3 instruments in Ableton Live: Native Instruments Noire piano, Omnisphere synths, and Slate & Ash Landforms strings. They are re-sampled in Samplr on the iPad using the routing available on the iConnectivity Audio 4c interface.
I'm playing the Moog Model D app using the built-in keyboard from AUM in latch mode for drones.
All audio is mixed and recorded in Ableton Live 12 Suite.

    I've always been thankful for these videos of yours, Andrew, for a bunch of reasons really, but near (or possibly at) the top would be for introducing S+A Landforms and Native Noire (and also Fugue Machine and Chordjam); both of which to me are among the richest, most organic and inspiring sound sources I've ever come across in the realm of digital music production. My musical ear tends to be biased against pure synths (they always sound to me like what they are - cold, lifeless machines) but these other more acoustically derived sound sources, especially when paired with any of the many cool granular and other filtering goodies available these days, seems to me to enable the best of both worlds: new and unique sounds that nevertheless live and breathe. You really demo all of this better than anybody else I'm aware of. Again, many thanks. Please keep these coming!

    Hi Andrew, beautiful music and thanks for sharing your workflow. In my efforts to get away from the point and click workflow in Ableton, and make my music creation process more tactile and fun, your videoes has inspired me to try this out. For jamming and live performance this is great, but how do go about making finished songs for your albums? Are you exporting each individual audio track from the iPad into Ableton for rearranging, or are your songs made entirely on the iPad, and Ableton only used for mixing and mastering?

    • @andrewtasselmyer2436
      @andrewtasselmyer2436 Před měsícem

      Thanks so much for listening, and for the kind words! I really appreciate it. Great question - the short answer is that I tend to record these sessions directly in Ableton as I jam/play, so I have a copy of each individual track available to work with and edit later. I often just freewheel a session for 20-30 minutes and work those longer recorded ideas into a more concise arrangement after the fact. Sometimes I will go back and re-record a part of it didn’t come out like I wanted in the improv jam. AUM and other DAWs typically allow for recording each individual track, too, so even if I’m away from the studio, I’m always able to have them on my phone or iPad and export them to the laptop later to mix, edit, chop, condense, and arrange in Ableton Live.

      @@andrewtasselmyer2436 There are only very few videos here on CZcams, that provide such constructive and systematic insights about how to set up and organize AUM for live performances. AUM in this regard is unique, as it allows for very individual solutions, since it is more of an open platform, rather than being ruled by paradigms that DAWS predominantly push users in. Also connecting two iOS devices (or an iOS device plus a macOS device) via a device such as the iConnect, opens up new possibilities, or can extend the workflow. There are quite a few similarities between your approach and how I work, yet, it is always good to take a closer look at how other artists operate and organize their performance and production environments, for some tips, new inspirations, and ideas. Do you also use overbridge to multitrack the digitakt in ableton while using it with the ipad?

      I no longer have the Digitakt, but when I did own it, yes, I used Overbridge often!

    Hi Andrew, I really enjoy your videos and find them very inspiring! I have a question: if I want to connect a computer, iPad mini 6, and Microfreak to an audio interface at the same time, with the computer running Live and the iPad running AUM with other effects apps for the Microfreak FX, can I use the Lewitt Connect 6 instead of the Audio 4C to achieve the same setup as yours?

      Yes you can! I don't have experience with it, myself, but presumably it can pass audio back and forth between devices and it has 2 input jacks for your synth.

    Question: Do you get to send input through ableton (for fx and such) to loopy pro for looping, and multi out back to ableton? So i could just use loopy as a looper module, but still have all my already made fx for each loop/channel in ableton? I read the loopy 1.1 supports multi output as AUv3 but i don’t know what that means in practice.

      Yes, you can route audio out of Ableton live, loop it in loopy pro, and then send the loop out on a separate channel to receive in Live again.

      Totally agreed! Wish more companies would take on this concept in their products.
