April 23, 2024 (Elektron Octatrack mk2) (sequencing & sampling with Ableton Live)

- a late night improvisation featuring 4 versions of the same piano sample on Octatrack's tracks 1-4. Each layer focuses on a different segment of the same 30-second sample, and each one has various amounts of bit crushing and filtering applied. I'm using the crossfader to mix between tracks 1&2 and 3&4, fading them in over time.
The MIDI tracks are triggering random C Minor chords in Ableton Live, which play the Native Instruments Noire piano and the Slate & Ash Landforms string library.
All of this was recorded and mixed in Ableton Live. No post-processing aside from volume normalization.

Thank you! Cheers!
nice one
Thanks!
Love it 🫶🏻
Thanks for watching!
Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic piece man. I know hearing things like that can, sometimes, just feel like empty slaps on the back. But seriously, this piece's backbone has a lot of potential as a basis for your 'sound' (if that's the kind of sound you want).
Also, are you getting any lag between the ocatatrack and Ableton live via audio I/Os? Thanks!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that. I was pretty happy with this one.
Yeah, there’s a slight bit of black. I usually have to do a tiny bit of quantization adjustment in Live to make it sync perfectly.
Lag. Not black. Typo!
Super cool!!
Thank you!
@@andrewtasselmyer2436 do you have plans to add a detailed description of this one on substack?
Yes, hoping to do that - have since recorded a slightly different version so just have to get my thoughts together.
Hey Andrew. Really nice idea, your pieces always inspire me to get writing again. I’ve been having clock issues in ableton and im just wondering if you could let me know what versions of mac OS, ableton and kontakt you are running? Im still trying to work out the issue but i suspect its a compatibility issue with me audio4C and version of ableton/mac OS. Keep the tunes coming !!😊
thanks so much for listening and for the kind words! I'm running the latest version of everything: Sonoma (14.4.1 as of the time of this comment) on MacOS, Ableton Live 12 Suite, and Kontakt 7. I've found that Ableton Link is pretty reliable if you're trying to clock iPad and Live together.
@@andrewtasselmyer2436 hmm interesting as I updated from Monterey to sonoma and experienced computer crashes when trying to use Kontakt 7.
I’ve gone back to Monterey now and everything appears stable but I’m getting glitchy drop outs and have tried everything i know of. I followed your midi config. I was wondering if the audio4c was bugging out. Will have to do some further isolation testing to figure it out.
One last question. Do you use vst or au versions of Kontakt. ?
I’m using the AU version most of the time.
