- This is how to go from Ableton Live to Octatrack using Parts, Patterns, and Stems. The goal is to show you how I take songs that I've made in Ableton Live and export them properly to be played on the Octatrack for live performances. We'll be talking about banks, patterns, parts, and so much more. It's surprisingly easier than you might think, but there are a few steps that you need to do and other steps that you need to avoid so let's get into it.

Incase you want to hear a few more OT tracks in person :)
I’m just commenting to boost the algorithm in favor of more Octatrack content. Will watch later
Lmfao!
Yes to more Octa!! Thanks big man. Looking forward to getting into this !
Man, I still love the old colour way Octa for the MKII. That grey is so sick.
I was struggling for month, trying to build all my live set only with OT, DT, and Electribe2, ending in a big pointless mess of volume problems, sequencing hell, and so on...
This video showed me the right balance between hardware and daw. Build nice patterns with hardware, record stem in daw, make them nicer, add some more sounds from daw if needed, then put all back in OT.
It definitely will help me to build something flexible and easier to manage.
Thank you so much Ricky!
A new Ricky video not dropping on a Saturday, but a Friday?!?!? Dope!!!
17:25 alternatively if you set the length by sequence rather than patterns you can always clock divide to have the Avalon ‘move’ through the steps at half the rate. You can actually get up to 64 bars this way too.
Thanks for the tips and instructions, Ricky. Much appreciated .......
Your warm, human, genuine approach to sharing not just your accumulated knowledge + insights but your missteps (happy accidents!) as well is beyond refreshing. Share the knowledge; knowledge is power is absolutely the truth, and you embody that in every video. Cheers--and please perform in Minneapolis sometime 🤓
This video was like a celebrity chef in his home kitchen making his favourite meal, ends with tasting the results, then invites you over so he can share the joy
OMG that long sample play trick was amazing dude!! 🙏
Octa for life!❤
Hello, as I’ve often said, you’re my go-to channel. I love sitting in my studio and keeping up with what you’re doing.❤🇩🇰
Thanks for this helpful video! I'd love to learn more about transitioning between tracks on the OT as that is something I struggle with.
Brilliant tips as always Enrique- thank you and best of luck for the gig tonight!
Nice one Ricky as per. Quick tip - you don’t need to keep any scenes blank, you can just mute either A or B and it is functionally equivalent of a blank scene 😉
oh man, playing the longer sample using 1:4/1:8!! such a simple but elegant way of doing it
i'd love to see a live set on the channel.🙏
I love octa videos. But mine is fried so now I wanna cry watching this
Really helpful - you and the Botster rock the Octa!!!
Excellent video and explanation!
Ricky you are the man!
Love your videos man fr
Love the octatrack. It's a bit of a pain but totally worth it.
Super nice video brother
OT for life
Good luck tonight! Hope you had fun at the show! Also +1 for more Octatrack time.
Man! what a tutorial! Me and "my partner in crime" are preparing our techno live set with the octatrack and other machines and when I saw the notification I tought I had to watch your vid immediately.
So, I discovered we are going in the right way as we are using your same approach. I'm not really confident with the parts yet, so I think we will use 1 bank for each track to be more safe, but I want to explore parts better because I see a lot of under-radar possibilities. Thank you as always for the inspirational content and motivation!
Great video, can’t wait to try this.
Little tip: I usually use the solo button in Ableton to pick the tracks I want to export and just export the master
Also, one other way you can launch long samples is to activate the "loop" setting and set the first step’s trig condition to "first"
You can also use "one shot trigs " by pressing func+trig on an already activated trig, this allows to only use the trig once, it will the be flashing and will not play again, but you can push it to activate it again. You can also push yes or no to activate/deactivate all one shot trigs.
So export your avalon track to a multiple of twelve steps loop in ableton, put your avalon track on loop in the OT, set your pattern to a one bar loop, set a deactivated one shot trig at the beginning of the pattern, and once you want to launch the track, just push the trig and it will launch next bar and loop perfectly! Ableton style!
Amazing.
Love your philosophy and videos Ricky. Now get that Mic-up closer to your voice box, you're one button too low for us to fully appreciate that wonderful bass and warmth of your voice. Much love brother. Cheers!
Thank you for Dataline Tinez it was non ironically useful
This is dope
Dooood more OT videos ❤❤
Love when u do OT vids! I played my first show with the OT last weekend, it went well but im trying to make it more performative and interactive.
I feel I was a bit too absorbed in the OT box, I wana connect and perform. Some ppl said they’d like to see me “DJ” again, which means my live performance was perceived as just playing a few tunes, while I was performing my own beats
Damn I wish I could be there for this!
I was just wondering if theres a new Ricky video out and here we are 🎉
Ahh fid you just shift the whole track pattern with func+left and right arrow keys?? I had no idea you could do THAT 😱
I really appreciate this. I'm trying to plan for a show and I'm going to translate some of the tips to the hardware I'm using
sometimes i'll rerecord parts into the OT using the quantized record buffers and then save them as static samples. its a fun way to add a new twist to the tracik
@@RickyTinez if you ever speak to people and they just kind of smile and nod, it may be because of statements like that. My monkey brain is trying to understand. Maybe if I hit this MPC 1000 with a rock or something...
Man, I wish there was a new Elektron device with some Octa characteristics but almost fully new that makes this process easier. I know there are other devices like from AKAI and so, but I like the elektron way of working (except for the octa lol). Nice video, Enrique. Un abrazo!
Great video as always Ricky. Saw you’re playing with Byron tonight. Wish I could make it, I’m sure everyone will kill it at the show! ✌🏽
Yea I can't wait! Byron the Aquarius is one of my favorite producers
I found the best way for me, is to use 4 stems from my tracks. Its the ideal balance between flexibility and ease of playing 😊
So cool! Wish I could come to your live shows! Couldn't you just stream this on youtube? Hidden Cam? :) :) Would love to see you perform. I really dig your music!
i think i know that very last song ;) haha thanks man
Send it!
I can’t remember who said this, but patterns basically allow you change the trig parameters on the Octa and parts allow you to change the values on the screen. That means that if you load up patterns 1-4 with part 1, you can load up patterns 5-8 with part 2 for a whole separate song in the same bank for example. Alternatively parts can also be fun if you’re flipping samples with the same trigs
Can you make video about your favourite music hardware???
Love a good live octa video. You mentioned you’re going to be playing with a CDJ out too. I’m currently in the process of trying to get a live hybrid set going where I can DJ and play live stuff too. Plan is to get a ethernet hub for both CDJs and then connect with an Ethernet to PC and then run Beat Link Trigger to connect to Ableton to control master tempo for my live gear. Would be great if you had some ideas or thoughts on how you’d do this! Cheers man, hope the show was dank.
holy crap, that sounds like building a rocket ship to mars haha! I just used tap tempo to get close enough then nudged the CDJ and moved the tempo slider until it was right!
I must know where you got those lamps...
love this video Ricky, I do a lot of the same when prepping OT sets.
but god do I wish Ableton let you enhance the zoom of the waveform without affecting gain. it’s so obnoxious looking at empty clips of blocks and thinking “is there something actually recorded on here or is it just silence?” 😅
tell me about it... 🤦🏽 I always gain up 24db trim it, then lower it back hahaha
It’s a feature in Ableton 12
Is there an advantage to using parts on patterns to differentiate songs vs banks? We're limited to 4 songs using parts on patterns, right? I hope your set was dope! w/Byron too? Nice!
thats my name!
"Mr. G style" nice
how are you feeling about the 12 beta?
yep
I crop clips to get the same result as consolating
would the same applies to digitakt only that digitakt operates slightly diff than the octatrack?
❤❤❤
ive dropped a bunch of samples into the ot not realizing that they had a sample rate of like 8-22khz, that was a fun way to find out about the ot’s sampling engine 😝
yea I've done the same with 48khz and been like wait.. why does this sound 1 semitone off.. trying to play "in key" haha
@@RickyTinez I think you exported the percs at 48k. Hope you catch it before the show.
@@RickyTinez haha that would totally trip me out
If only they would release a mk 3 with a more refined interface
There's no need to find the right trigger condition for your sample length - just turn on "LOOP MODE" on the "AED" button and trigger the sample once.
Algo
Can someone please explain Parts to me like if I was a 5 year old?
Did you cover samplerates and such? Cuz that fucked me over some times when i was not paying attention.
Cuz u Said it was yada yada yada. But its Maybe the most important step in this tutorial ❤
porque siempre ableton..... algo en fl studio!!!
what? the octatrack can't operate at 48k?
How are you transitioning between tracks
He's just switching to another pattern that has another track on it. He used the delay to mask it a little.
People who are noobs here, what are an "A-bar"?
It's time for a new OT w/ 8 stereo/16 mono tracks/inputs, a free master and polyphonic sample playback. She'a getting a bit long in the tooth.
What you need is a second octatrack 😂
❤❤❤
