Freedom & Censorship: A Conversation with Greg Lukianoff (Episode #368)
Sam Harris speaks with Greg Lukianoff about free speech and cancel culture. They discuss the origins of political correctness, free speech and its boundaries, the bedrock principle of the First Amendment, technology and the marketplace of ideas, epistemic anarchy, social media and cancellation, comparisons to McCarthyism, self-censorship by professors, cancellation from the Left and Right, justified cancellations, the Hunter Biden laptop story, how to deal with Trump in the media, the state of higher education in America, and other topics.
Greg Lukianoff is the President & CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). He earned his undergraduate degree from American University and his law degree from Stanford, and he worked for the ACLU of Northern California and other organizations before joining FIRE in 2001. Greg says something in the full episode, toward the end, that seems innocuous, but it's actually quite dangerous. He speaks of Trump as just some kind of anomaly, just some aberration, which we are stumped by, and just don't know what to do with or about. We just don't even know how to conceptualize him. But that's not true. It is a blindness to discernment of evil. There is a "trump" in every family, at least one. The stats are something like 1 in 6 people is a "trump." And perhaps it's not at his level of severity, but the number of victims of narcissistic abuse suggest it might be just as severe. We have a serious cultural problem of medicalizing and intellectualizing evil, as it manifests in human beings, and we keep trying to figure it out, to explain it away, and to deny that it exists. Now, we see that it can't be explained away. And now perhaps we might look back even if not at religious doctrines which are replete with warnings about the "trumps," but even just really good Russian literature (Dostoyevsky, Turgenev, Gogol, etc.), which painted portraits of "trumps" in almost every novel.

    I like Sam Harris but from the first half of this I can't help but think he totally missed the ball on this one. I agree with what he is saying when it applies - but it seems he is generalizing all campus protests to be made up only of students with too much privilege and no understanding that they are being antisemitic. It totally misses the point of what many peaceful protests and other students are trying to get across....and pro-israel groups have started violence at these protests like at UCLA. There are bad actors on both sides of these protests

    The media, not just some jerk with a nice camera, but the BBC, CBC, New York Times, Washington Post, all focus on and Gaza and the palestinians with bias and end up being the voice of ham-ass. A hospital gets bombed and now 500 innocent women and children were SLAUGHTERED by Israel. It never got retractions when Israel had to produce proof that it was innocent, as guilty was the default. The truth is that muslims everywhere will always side with other muslims. It is the fact that Islam won't allow a infidel to win over a muslim. The fact that there are Muslim people fighting with the IDF is the greatest victory of logic and reason over blind faith.

I have no respect for you anymore, the dislike of religion has changed you to a war monger and a lover of Zionists. Now I know all you have stood up to now is just lies otherwise you would treat a Jewish Zionist state the same as an Islamic state, with no statehood and rights. Please read the Jewish historians like Ilan Peppe and many others who have researched the horrendous calamity the Zionist Jews brought on the Palestine. Not all Jews are Zionist hence the huge numbers who are against the murderous actions of Israel. This is not a war, it is so lopsided if it wasn’t so sad would be funny. Natanyahu helped Hamas build those tunnels and created Hamas to weaken the PLO. Please educate yourself before you become Naranyahu’s loudspeaker. Pls learn the history. I am at the beginning of this and I’m surprised the way Spencer talks about a child crying and feels so sad yet so many Palestinians have been killed and we haven’t hear such sorrow, these two are so biased. How dare you not realize what Israel has done to the 20:53 Palestinians. The jubilation is due to 75 years of captivity and for once for a moment they have the power to do what has been done to them for all these years. The IDF has committed much worse acts, and it’s all covered up. Very biased discussion.

    I agree with much of what you say. But 1 the heart of the conflict is the ethnic cleansing of Palestine initially by Jewish terrorists from Nov 47 with British complicity (see Ilan Pappe's well researched book). 2 Israel can be as nasty as Hammas in celebrating their victims, see eg Brother Andrew's account of the dying Palestinian teenager strapped to the hood of an IDF jeep and driven around Gaza ('Light Force p284/5.) Israel is an apartheid state and not a full democracy. There is no rule of law for Palestinians. I know, I founded a business business there.

      You promptly forget and ignore that Palestinan Arabs were offered a state of their own in 1947 but promptly rejected the UN partition plan. Imagine if Palestinian Arabs HAD accepted the partition plan. They would have had a state from which to build upon. And instead, what do they have today? Nothing but their Nabka storyline, which they choose to dwell in and focus their hatred upon Israel ever since. Even if Israel is an Apartheid state, Palestinian Arab culture offers no democracy, no civilized law, just an atrocious acceptance of radical Islam.

    Really disingenuous to say that Muslim countries have made Jews their "eternal enemies" for thousands of years. Almost all the conflict between Jews and Muslims today stems from the creation of Israel in 1948, which the Muslim world (correctly) views as western, Christian-backed and anti-Muslim/anti-Arab. I mean, if the Jews needed a state of their own (and I believe they did), how come it wasn't carved out of Germany? Why were the Palestinians expected to leave? And not just leave, but accept their fate out of fairness to the Jews? It's such a European colonial mindset that we should not be viewing favorably in 2024. Sam veers into misinformation when he starts talking about history that he clearly doesn't understand. And what's worse is that one need not even go there, since Israel already exists and isn't going anywhere, and the points about Hamas/Oct. 7th don't rely on it at all. It needlessly undermines his whole argument when he says things that are this ignorant.

    • @LordGreystoke
      @LordGreystoke Před dnem

      And you veer into stupidity when you don’t acknowledge that Palestinian Arabs could have had a state of their own back in 1948 but were consumed as all Arabs were into hating Israel and wanting to destroy it. If Arabs had accepted the partition plan, there would have been no “Nakba “ and Palestinian Arabs could be living g by an entirely different narrative but instead are consumed by their hatred towards Israel. Palestinians Arabs need to do some serious soul searching to reinvent their culture and learn to embrace Western values of free speech, religion of choice and not Islam, and a broader acceptance of human differences in ideas and opinions. God is not great and Palestinian Arabs need to embrace it.

      @@LordGreystoke yes Arabs were "given" a state in 1948 - but at the time western nations (still operating in colonial mindset) had no moral right to give land to 100,000s of other Europeans immigrant in middle east at expense of indigenous arab population. It should be at least understandable that Arabs resisted that colonial move at the time - now 80 years have passed and Zionists sort of won by brutal force and there is a new reality on the ground.- Ok well done, and Palestinians are seeking a 2 state solution because you can;t undo history- it does not change the fact that a historical injustice was done to them.

    The Muslim immigration we had to start with was "toss off the veil and be free" but that very quickly becomes huge numbers setting up mini Pakistans (who then begin oppressing your veil-less cohort). You must say ZERO or you will end up like us in the UK.
