As ukrainian, reading mostly positive comments on that interview was extremely bizarre. Imagine getting two hours long interview with Osama Bin Laden two years after September the 11th attack, and people write crazy things like "wow, Osama looks so healthy and lively!" and "It's the most important interview of the century" and "it's a good idea to listen to both sides"....
So we shouldn't listen to both sides? Maybe sort out your Nazi problem before poking your nose in elsewhere.

I've been following Sam Harris for years and there was a time when he was friends with people like elon. But then elon's actions went against all of his principles and core values and so he made a conscious decision to let elon know his thoughts, try to help him and then disengage from that friendship. That's what a a real man with real convictions looks like.

This entire video was full of lies, from claiming that "Tucker said life in Russia is much better than the U.S." and Tucker has never said this. This claim spewed by the left comes from an episode he did comparing the capital of Russia, Moscow, to the capital of the United States, and saying "it's so much better there!" And also made comments about Russian society saying "its alot better than America"
And this is objectively true. Washington DC and practically all our major cities are decaying, and have a bunch of mentally ill people banging their heads and screaming and making animal sounds, and shooting up with needles, defecating on sidewalks, we have tents and homelessness and rampant crime, and that is practically non-existent when you visit the major cities and capitals of say China, or Russia, or Japan, or the UAE.
This claim that "Tucker glorifies autocrats who attack their political opponents, and silence dissidents" is also false, Tucker never glorified Putin's actions or any other autocrat, nor has he denied it, he has numerous times acknowledged the fact that Putin jails and kills dissidents and opponents. Tucker in a few instances was simply calling out the hypocrisy and double standard, in regards to the fact that so many people especially on the left pretend that America and Europe are these beacons of perfection and are saints, and it's evil Russia who is the only country on earth throughout history and the present who does such things and no such thing occurs in the west.
Again... false. There is data out there actually that suggests more people have been jailed in the UK, Canada, U.S., for just liking, sharing or making a social media post that is critical of the government and ruling class, than in Russia, the difference is actually astonishing. And the belief that "only Russia silences criticism and dissidents" when there is very clear proof it occurs here too, at much higher rates, big tech censorship, the Twitter files, the Google whistleblower, the covering up of Biden's scandals on the eve of 2020 election which affected the election, the lies and censorship that occurred over COVID, lying about ivermectin and calling it "horse dewormer that does nothing for covid" despite data demonstrating it has clinical medicinal use in treating mild cases, censoring doctors who were criticizing the establishment narratives. So many other examples...
We don't jail critics and dissidents? Ok, so I guess Julian Assange has been a Russian citizen this whole time then, huh? How about the fact that a Ukrainian operative tried to assassinate Tucker Carlson when he was in Moscow? And who funds Ukraine's government and keeps their entire regime afloat and gives them intelligence, consultancy, and is a de-facto U.S. client state...? Oh right, the United States, duh.
"Tucker and the right-wing supports autocracy, and likes Putin" and he of course shows zero evidence, because there isn't any.
Tucker has openly condemned Putin as a psychopath and has said numerous times he is definitely not a good human being. But in terms of a leader who is solely interested in strengthening Russia and undermining the American global led order, that's a different story.
There there people on the right who adore Putin, those are anomalies, that obviously doesn't represent the entire right. It's a form of orphan-syndrome, some people on the right feel a lack of strong confident leadership in the United States and having a weak senile president whose policies have done nothing but strengthen our enemies and provide China and Iran with significantly more leverage over the U.S. and this results in people on the right liking Putin. It would be foolish to use these anomalies and apply them as an entire blanket over the entire political right-wing. If we're gonna go that route, then the left is much worse, since alot of leftists glorify Fidel Castro, Mao Zedong and Stalin, and glorify communism. Some leftists even call themselves "maoists" nowadays.
In regards to Tucker's claim about how Russian society is much better than here in America, he was referring to the fact that in Russia, things like national unity, patriotism, nationalism, love for the nation, love for your fellow citizens, good values such as family, religion, etc, are all present. Whereas in America, these values are highly discouraged and shunned upon.
You get called a white nationalist terrorist MAGA extremist for simply saying "I think we should have policies that put America and our citizens first", religion is frowned upon and atheism is considered more acceptable, nationalism and patriotism is considered "bad" whereas globalism is popular. And then we also have the total hatred and demonization and dehumanization towards 61% of Americans who are white, and a general sense of distrust and unease towards fellow Americans-- you ask for help in the streets and you'll get ignored and treated like a ghost. Lets not ignore the fact that our country is politically polarized and hyper radicalized on each side like never before.
There's nothing wrong with pointing out these facts, and acknowledging the fact that Russian society is more cohesive, unified, and has common uniting values among themselves, whereas in America we have very little if any uniting values anymore.
The left wants atheism or islam to be the default religion, wants socialism or full blown communism, wants restrictions on wealth building, partial or complete redistribution of private property and wealth, wants equal outcomes for everyone and state enforced equity, wants social justice, globalist policies, wants morality and emotions over rationality and logic, considers college a perquisite for having any position of authority or power regardless of what niche, wants kids sexualized as early as possible because they feel not sexualizing children is considered "oppression" and "forcing them to be straight", wants to completely abolish police and replace them with college educated social workers, wants white people to be treated as sub-human in a bid to avenge the damage done to blacks in the past, wants to abolish the 1st ammendment and begin banning and penalizing speech and expression that hurts people's feelings, wants women to dominate society and wants men to be subservient to them, wants a genderless society, wants all drug use to be legalized and normalized, a complete liberation of the self from all constraints of reality and a total rejection of order, wants the pride flag to be the new national flag, a complete rejection of the nuclear family, wants abortion to be legalized no matter how old the infant is, wants children to be allowed to make permanent life altering decisions for themselves without parental involvement, wants a race based and sexuality based incentivized culture, wants anti-american/America last policies, and wants to abolish the 2nd ammendment and confiscate all guns.
Whereas the right wants christianity as a default religion, wants capitalism and private property, wants equal opportunities for everyone instead of equal outcomes, wants meritocracy instead of race & sexuality based incentivization and hierarchy, wants all races to be equal, believes in only two genders, wants traditional gender roles where men are dominant and woman are subservient, wants more police, rejects the emphasis that college is a prerequisite for positions of power and authority, wants patriotism, nationalism, wants America first policies, a complete rejection of globalism, wants to restore order to society and prioritize order over absolute freedom and liberation of the self from all constraints of reality, prefers logic and rationality over emotions and morality, wants absolutely nothing to do with kids and sexuality until they turn 18, wants parents to have involvement in children's lives and not allow children to make permanent life altering decisions themselves, wants 1st and 2nd ammendments to remain, wants gun ownership legalized nationwide with no restrictions besides background checks, and is anywhere between anti-abortion, and only pro-choice up to 4-16 weeks (it varies among people), wants the American flag to remain, and would prefer to abolish the pride flag due to the belief amongst the right that the American flag represents every American and other flags simply divide and are non-inclusive, wants pro-american/America first policies, wants drug use reduced and stricter penalties for drug trafficking, etc.
And the problem is that neither side is willing to compromise or meet in the middle. It's "our way, or nobody's way!" So at some point, you have to acknowledge the fact that what Tucker was pointing out in his observation and comparison between American and Russian society, are legitimate and valid points.
This is what I hate about the left, the overuse of the association fallacy, and the constant belief that in essence "the man who discovered math is an evil genocidal bigot, so from now on 1+2 does not equal 3 anymore, it equals 5, and anybody that thinks 1+2 = 3 is also an evil genocidal bigot". This inability to accept facts and valid arguments and assertions whilst retaining an ability to dislike the source/person stating it.
If Tucker has actually seriously said he loves Putin and denies that he's ever done anything evil or authoritarian, and has actually said "Life as an average Russian citizen is much better than life as an average American citizen" then please show me a video of it. Also, Tucker has admitted he isn't perfect and has made mistakes and told lies, he has admitted to being and spreading misinformation about Iraq having WMDs and being in favor of invading Iraq, try to find me a "journalist" for CNN or MSNBC or PBS or ABC, CBS, CNBC, etc, that has admitted to be wrong in the last year about something, and _actually_ criticizes the ruling class political elite establishment and not shilling for it. But I'm gonna assume most here are referring to his criticism against the U.S. ruling class. Therefore, I challenge anyone to give me 3 examples of Tucker making false claims about the ruling class political elite establishment that weren't true.

To answer the question though: we got there by the utter complacency and failure of the left.
I'm a classic 90s leftist, which is now considered being centrist because of the huge shift caused by the woke/political correctness movement in the recent years. I remember a calm and rational left, with a sense of humour that would make eloquent progressive points against right wing conservatives.
Today's left has brushed aside all opposition by lazily branding them as idiots/bigots, and completely failed to properly engage with moderates by adopting a ride or die dogmatic philosophy. Both sides are now in their social media echo chambers damning each other, and the moderates who refuse to drink either red or blue kool aid are left damning them both.

True, but that's 2 during a 2-hour interview. What about blaming Poland for the Nazi invasion, just accepting that the CIA blew up the pipeline, and that Putin is jusy trying to root out neo nazis in Ukraine? Personally I have no problem with western journalists interviewing Putin, but the whole point of interviewing political leaders is to challenge them. Tucker went home from his trip to Russia looking so foolish, but his followers are too foolish to even understands how foolish he was.

When it comes to Tucker and others on the right trying to push an agenda im always struggling with this question: Do they actually believe that what they are doing/saying is right or are they just pondering to their followers, as long as it gets them views?
For Tucker specifically, we already know it's the latter. He spent 4 years giving Trump a tongue bath on air while in private he was constantly screaming about how he hated him and nothing good came from his presidency and he can't wait to never have to talk about him again, and the MAGA crowd are a bunch of idiot hicks etc., only to suck back up to him the moment it started to look like he was the nominee again. He went off about how horrific and shameful Jan 6 was to his coworkers while doing piece after piece calling them hero's and patriots. He's never been consistent on any ideological beliefs throughout his entire career, just following the prevailing wind and taking whichever positions he thinks will gain him the most sycophants and money. He plays a character for a paycheck, period, and he's by no means an outlier in the world of right wing commentary.

@@GlutenEruption it's always been a case of kayfabe with Tucker (like when pro wrestlers wear their wrestling singlet to the supermarket and stay in character all the time). It's what certain members of our society WANT wrestlers to be, so that's how they act in their public lives even though most know it's an affectation (albeit they still get hit - just not as hard as it looks).
I think an interesting discussion would be between Sam and Ben Hodges, former commanding general, U.S. Army, Europe. Hodges readily grants interviews.

Do you not see how Russia is simply beginning to take a page out of the US playbook in how they approach geopolitics? Putin is just treating Ukraine the way that the US has treated the middle east for decades. And did you actually watch the segment on Tucker Carlson in Russia? Yes he is taking a few cheap shots at the Biden Administration but other than violating the tribal expectation of the US being an enemy of Russia, he is contributing to warming relations between the US and Russia which puts us at less risk of getting wrapped up in a proxy(or direct) war with Russia, and God knows we don't need the additional inflation here in America of going to war!

How that’s connected? You can be fully equipped with a sense of morality while also holding the view that free will doesn't exist. Your moral compass is shaped by a mix of influences - like upbringing, society, and personal insights - rather than by the belief in free will alone.
@@LeslyGarreau Morality requires a person have some control over their actions. Without free will / under determinism, a person has no control over their actions. They only experience such control things as an illusion. Influences etc, are completely irrelevant to this fact, because they are all determined too. Under Sam's view, someone like Putin or Trump were completely determined to do what they did and no other outcome was possible. To claim they are immoral is like claiming the weather is immoral for raining on you.

But, we can still hold people accountable for their actions based on their ability to understand the consequences of their choices and make decisions based on that understanding, even if their capacity for choice is ultimately determined.
My argument is that even in a deterministic framework, the concept of morality remains relevant. We can distinguish between actions that are morally right or wrong and those that are amoral, even if these distinctions are predetermined.
The choice to learn about morality, to discern right from wrong, may itself be predetermined, but this does not diminish its importance or validity.
I apologize if my explanation isn't perfectly articulate; I'm not a philosopher by any means. Does this make sense?
@@LeslyGarreau You can't hold people accountable for things they had no control over. Under determinism you have no control over your actions. Everything is determined and plays out as it is determined to happen. Under determinism the concept of morality is not valid; because morality presupposes we have some choice to take the moral or immoral action. But what actions we take are pre-determined, as is all our moral reasoning (which we experience as the illusion they WE are doing it).
You would not hold someone morally accountable in a criminal trial if you thought they acted without free will. But when it comes to Sam Harris, such common sense is thrown out the window as he holds all his ideological enemies fully morally accountable and condemns their actions while simultaneously claiming they have no free will. It's beyond absurd.
You know those studies in which people were willing to accept a disadvantage for themselves, just to get back at and punish someone else? This is that mechanism at play: If you despise the establishment / corporate elite just enough, you’ll do anything they disapprove of, regardless of when it’s in your own interest or not.
So this passes, under Tucker Carlson, as 'journalism' with his recent sit-down 'interview' (read: mostly a monologue with Vladimir Putin.)
Where to start with Putin's blatant historical revisionism? Putin kicked off the big event with a half-hour-long monologue about Russian history, and, amid his holding forth on Yaroslav the Wise, the Ryurik dynasty, and the baptism of Rus (and this was all merely leading up to 1000 A.D.), many viewers likely tuned out, and turned off their online stream. The upshot of Putin’s lecture, it soon became clear, was that Ukraine, supposedly, never existed as a nation, a culture, or an ethnicity separate from Russia; that there was no mention of such a place until 1919, when the Bolsheviks created the Soviet Socialist Republic of Ukraine; and, therefore, the assertion of Ukrainian independence, after the breakup of the USSR in 1991, was an absurdity and a gesture of ingratitude.
This is absolute and total nonsense. As many analysts and historians noted when Putin laid out his thesis in a 5,000-word essay in 2021 called "On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians."
Carlson sat listening with the expression of a listless undergrad student, who wondered if he’d stumbled into the wrong seminar. He challenged none of this historical revisionism. But then, Carlson simply does not have the wherewithal to do so. His lack of historical perspective and accompanied subject knowledge will trip him up further down the interview session.
Putin omitted, or distorted, much context. And Tucker Carlson never pushed back, either because Carlson is in essence a dilettante, or was starstruck by his Who's-Your-Daddy interviewee, or an (*)useful idiot; the principal sycophant in US media for and on behalf of Vladimir Putin. Take your pick; my guess it's all the above.
Instead of a journalistic interview, Putin hijacked the spectacle to underline his status as the world’s most dangerous amateur historian. Putin even managed to slide a belittling ditty onto Tucker, to clearly show who's in charge of this session, in referring to Carlson's earlier failed attempt getting a CIA job.
Needless to say, much of Putin’s "interview" lecture was complete nonsense that echoed longstanding Russian imperial myths, while conveniently overlooking Ukraine’s centuries of documented history. In his manner, Putin ridiculed Ukraine as an illegitimate and artificial state. He dismissed the entire notion of a separate Ukrainian nation, calling it an anti-Russian conspiracy involving everyone from the Poles and the Pope to the Austrian General Staff.
In theory, at least, the same Putin bogus historical arguments that have been used to justify the invasion of Ukraine could easily be applied to other parts of the former Soviet Union, or to the Russian Empire of the Czarist era. Putin's logical conclusion to his revanchism would create an array of possible targets for Russian aggression, including Finland, Poland, the Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Alaska, and the whole of Central Asia. A maximalist interpretation could even see all of Central Europe’s former Soviet satellite states besides Poland added to the list.
Despite the twaddle from propagandists in Moscow (and a few academics in the United States), Russia’s war is not about NATO, or borders, or the balance of power. The Russian dictator Vladimir Putin intends to absorb Ukraine into a new Russian empire, and he will eradicate the Ukrainians if they refuse to accept his rule.
Europe is in the midst of the largest war on the continent since Nazi panzers in World War II rolled from Norway to Greece, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine is by far the most important threat to world peace since the worst days of the Cold War. In a less febrile political era, defeating Russia would be the top priority of every American politician. The Republicans in Congress, however, remain fixated both on their hatred of Ukraine and on their affection for Russia.
In principle, it is a feat for a journalist to interview a murderous dictator. The uproar over Tucker Carlson’s announcement that he would interview Vladimir Putin was that the endavour would amount to pure Kremlin propaganda. Carlson, after all, is an admirer of Putin who, in his days as a Fox News host, hoped out loud that Russia would win its war against Ukraine. It was also feared that Putin would spout a stream of lies and that Carlson, who is not a real journalist, much less a historian, would be incapable of pushing back.
Tucker Carlson frequently made sympathetic comments about Vladimir Putin and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine when he was at Fox News. His remarks, which often reflected Putin’s claims about the war, were used by Russian state television to show the Russian president was "correct" because the same was being said by “the most popular television presenter in America”.
Not burdensome, then, to spot the rationale why the Kremlin only wanted Tucker to interview Vlad, and previously said 'no' to any other western media house. Tucker is an (*)"useful idiot" indeed.

(*) "Useful idiot" --- In 1961, American journalist Frank Gibney wrote that Lenin had coined the phrase "useful idiot." To propagandize the West, Lenin recruited a corps of “useful idiots." Gibney wrote that the phrase was a good description of "Communist followers," from Jean-Paul Sartre, to Japan's Socialist Party, to members of the Popular Front in Chile.

Well said. When Queen Elizabeth died, Tucker was critical of how stupid the past colonies who didn't bother her death were. He particularly mentioned how great Britain ruled India and that they provided the best infrastructure like railways, which the colonies were not capable of. As an American well wisher myself, the Indian independence and constitution was well studied by leaders before India became a republic.
What Tucker said was hurtful to billions of people who suffered 200+ years of colonization.
American politics is evolving to be like the Indian politics because of diversity, and it's not a weakness by any means. The democracy is doing well, despite the populace being skeptical of it. America is still 100 times better than any nation. it's always a work in progress. Any stupid leaders might set back a few years, but it's still stronger together. Let's build and embrace the democracy. We are grateful for it.

There's nothing to discuss. Mearsheimer's entire argument is based on denial of facts:
- Blocking the progress of Ukraine’s admission to NATO by France, Germany, Italy and others since 2008 (which was probably a reaction to Putin’s Munich speech). In 2008, Ukraine was denied a membership plan.
- The impossibility of admitting Ukraine to NATO since 2014. This was literally impossible, the appearance of Ukraine in the alliance would automatically and immediately activate Article 5.
- Putin’s revanchist and pseudo-historical visions of Ukraine and Ukrainians, which most likely were the real reason for the start of the war.
Tucker Carlson interviewing Putin only seems like a heroic journalistic act because western journalism has become so terrible. And the reason Putin is getting so much support in the USA is because the current leadership is so horrifically bad.
Also, I honestly don't see a problem with Tucker interviewing him. Would you prefer it if we censored everything Putin said? Should we just block out all alternative opinions on the war? Why not interview him?
Giving him a platform to speak and supporting him are not the same thing. Interview him and then let the public make up their minds. And if a large chunk of the US public starts to support Putin, well that's tough luck. That's free speech.
The reporting on the interview has been shit. I have yet to hear anyone talk about how Putin was kind of mystified at what the hell we are doing. Specifically, big oil deals are being done now in yuan and rubles.

I think it’s hard for many Americans to understand why it’s important to oppose Putin because they don’t share a border with any expansionist regimes. Poland, Finland, Sweden, and every other country that borders Ukraine or Russia, are investing heavily into defence and building a coalition. But Americans and even us in Canada can just ignore the problem and consider it a Europe problem. It really makes me sick.

I’ve just been wondering whether the emergence of conspiracy theories is a yearning of the critical mind for a more complex world. Some people who do seem to have intellectual potential seem to be subconsciously offended when the world suddenly turns so black and white. Then they assume there must be more to this, a second rational side to the story, a side that nobody tells you about. That’s a more complex narrative, and therefore appealing to intelligence. It’s the same reason why Jordan Peterson likes to overcomplicate his interpretation of the Bible. But sometimes, the other side truly doesn’t have any rational arguments. Sometimes, it’s truly just “muh history”, “muh religion” - and the rest is pure self-interest and brute force.

There is a difference between an interview and serving as a microphone stand for Russian propaganda. Tucker asked only one really difficult question (out of five questions asked?) and was unable to get an answer to it.

After Tucker's interview with Putin, I think Lex Fridman interviewed Tucker for three hours because he'd like to interview Putin himself. Lex thinks Putin doesn't get out much, and might benefit from talking to such a loving and open Russian as Lex. They could talk about martial arts! Between Masha Gessen and Lex, yeah, Putin would probably choose Lex, but no one is making him choose, and Putin chose Tucker for such obvious reasons: America's #1 popular Storm Trumper, Putin fan, and conspiracy theorist slash gigglepuss.
What Lex's interview ended up doing, judging by the comments, is drawing a ton of comments from Tucker fans, thinking that Tucker was terrific and Lex is some kind of Tucker fan now, too. LOL. He isn't, believe me! Tucker fans often type with no capital letters or punctuation. These aren't people any sane person would want in their think tank.
Here are some of my takeaways from the Lex interview with Tucker:
1. Tucker thinks that the outcome of US elections are determined by the CIA.
2. Tucker gave an excuse for his Trump-hating (with a passion) emails that were exposed in the Dominion case against Fox. Tucker's excuse is laughable, and if anyone wants me to explain what Tucker said, I will.
3. Tucker explained that the 2020 election was rigged, because it went beyond Election Day and they counted absentee ballots. (I'm not kidding.)
4. Tucker admits he's an AH at times, and that he lies sometimes, but he "tries to tell the truth." LOL What a freak!

I think it was an important interview for Americans to watch. Most American media entities talk in terms like “What should we do about such and such conflict.” I don’t hear many of them talking about how our power to dictate terms might be fading. And that in the future our sense of morality may become one strong voice in a crowd of others. It’s the kind of cold dose of reality that only a rival can give you. And even though I find Tucker ridiculous, I’m glad he did the interview.

One of those times I agree with Sam. But that was mostly a demonstration of the character of 99.999% of human population - if my guy does it, it must have been right. If my political opponent does it, it must have been wrong. People do not have the will or the time to think due to their daily lives, so they just think how their idols are telling them to, from the TV screens.

Do I agree with the way Tucker handled the interview, particularly the post interview sideshow, no. However, I did find value from the interview shedding light on putins state of mind. Putin can be called a lot of things but on his last legs he is not. He appeared fully in control which makes him a much scarier opponent than we have been led to believe. This is a rational actor fully in control of his faculty’s, and despite his colorful “history” lesson the goal isn’t Ukraine for historical purposes per se, his goal is the Moldovan Bessarabian Gap and other key access points to mother Russia. Bessarabia aside, the other access points Russia doesn’t currently control are on NATO soil. If the access points are the goal, then once he has the one he can forcibly take without a NATO military response, a direct nuclear exchange to secure the others is virtually inevitable. Russia stands no chance in a conventional arms war with NATO but Russia knows the US and the other nuclear armed European states would be hesitant to retaliate and ensure their own destruction over nukes being used on other nations soil. Russia employs a modern version of blitzkrieg and strikes first, plugs the remaining gaps with conventional second wave and immediately reiterates a MAD policy if any NATO forces cross those gaps. A new iron curtain falls and probably stays closed indefinitely as demographics point to the dissolution of many of those states regardless over the next 30 years. Russia gets its security as their own demographic implosion occurs and the west stops London, Paris and New York from being craters.
That interviews value wasn’t in the line of questioning it was in ascertaining a state of mind for the very closed off cult of personality that is Putin. He played his hand brightly with his history lesson, it was a message to those in western governments who know history well. Russia is coming for the access points and there is nothing we can do about it…

I thought the interview itself was decent for what it was. The thing that surprised me the most was Tucker shopping spree. That showed me just how out of touch he is with an average person. And the fact that he was surprised that grocery was cheaper in a country where the median household income is waay lower than that in the States was pure comedy.
