  • In this episode of the podcast, Sam Harris speaks with Garry Kasparov about Putin’s war of aggression in Ukraine. They discuss Putin’s larger objectives, the perception of the war inside Russia, whether US and EU foreign policy is to blame, the expansion of NATO, American weakness, Republican support for Putin, the sanctions regime, whether the US and EU should impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine, whether to openly seek regime change in Russia, how we can avoid WW3, what post-Putin government in Russia might look like, Western economic entanglement with autocracies, and other topics.
Garry Kasparov is a Russian pro-democracy leader, Chairman of the Human Rights Foundation, business speaker and author, and former world chess champion. He has been a contributing editor to The Wall Street Journal since 1991 and in 2013 he was named a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Oxford-Martin School. He is the author of several books including How Life Imitates Chess, and his most recent book, Winter Is Coming: Why Vladimir Putin and the Enemies of the Free World Must Be Stopped.
Garry will be sharing more information about these topics in an upcoming Briefing with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba & Soldiers from the Frontlines, hosted by Renew Democracy Initiative, a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization dedicated to defending liberal democracy at home and abroad.

It doesnt matter what a geopolitically irrelevant nation like Poland wants. The US decides to admit nations and it was driving by arms dealers lobbying for NATO expansion. This causes security issues because when NATO expands, the new member state has to buy a lot of very expensive weaponry. Don’t really agree with… the EU is “toothless organization afraid of its own shadow” (Kasparov) and “they buy a lot of gas” (Harris). It’s an inaccurate political analysis. The EU is a unique model of international cooperation that guaranteed over 70 years of peace and stability in Europe (something that never happened in history). The same certainly can’t be said about America and their approach towards foreign politics.
Clearly the two can’t be compared - the EU is not a state nor a federation, it doesn’t have an army and it wasn’t created for this purpose. To suggest that the lack of “muscles” on the side of the EU had anything to do with this is wrong. The EU changed the lives of everyone who lived in Europe for the better, in so many ways - and it’s an essential mediator between the West and the East and Middle East. Other than this, it was a useful conversation.

I recently returned to the US from Ukraine. I have an apartment in Kiev. I was not aware that it was possible to misinterpret the situation in Ukraine, so I was quite surprised to see that the justification for war is controversial. I like Kim Iversen very much. So, rather than being disappointed with her, I wanted to think of how someone so intelligent could miss such a large conclusion. I realize that it is difficult to have an accurate understanding if one has not been on the ground and seen the atrocities. I won’t go into the history of my training in propaganda in order to be brief, but another thing that is not easily understood about propaganda is that there are 3 basic forms. One form is called a distraction campaign. Let me explain: propaganda is often not lies. Propaganda can be a series of true statements that draw our attention away from the big picture. In order to believe that NATO's move into Poland makes Russia’s invasion and the deaths of tens of thousands of people less bad, one would have to be “morally incapable of solving real world problems,” to barrow a term from Sam Harris.
Russia invaded Ukraine. What is the solution? Leave Ukraine. That’s the big picture. One day, parents are getting ready for work and getting their kids ready for school. The next minute they’re looking for their daughter’s arm on the ground. That’s not over dramatized. It’s a real story. I urge you to go help, as I did, and you will see. Don’t let Russia distract you, my brothers and sisters. Is this the only way to cause peace in Ukraine? Is it the best way? Of course not. Their “peace keeping operation” causes far more death than virtually any other alternative. Also, many children are being killed by Russian artillery. It is said that it is not intentional. There’s no difference between intention and knowing it will happen. When you send a missile and accept 80% accuracy and the possibility of 20% collateral damage, you are knowingly killing children. Don’t be distracted. Remember the big picture. The US used a similar propaganda campaign in 2001. See the video if you want. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Kasparov is a bit naive in assuming Russian pilots won't "risk their lives" in the event that a no-fly zone is implemented. The air forces generally have some of the most disciplined soldiers in any military service. They will do as their told. And if they don’t someone else will do it for them. I take no pleasure in saying this, but it's just too great a risk.

Also, the comment about avoiding trade with Saudi Arabia, Iran, Venezuela, etc. just because they have blood on their hands is a bizarre metric for doing business. You could apply that logic to just about any major country.

Aren t you naive assuming discipline in the army that always had more dezertors than europeans had soldiers?when they were soviets with zagrad otryads they had a ton of undisciplined and dezertors,do you think now in a corrupted cleptocracy without ideology they ll be more disciplined and obedient ?

Or, perhaps, you mean a firing squad holding the soldiers family hostage. Good old NKVD goons.

Do you know what war is? Do you know how to tell an enemy from a friend? Hint: one is actively firing missiles at you.

The problem with Kasparov interviews is that you already know what he will say and how he will say it before the interview starts. I would like to hear a fresh take (and don’t mean that for the Contrarian’s sake of Teaching the Argument.)

Was hoping to listen to it but its not a big enough issue to warrant public announcement. And I'd rather donate the 15 or 100 bucks to the army.
