    FYI this is not a cane juice rum / agricole. Flor De Cana only produce molasses based rums. It's a nice example of spanish style rum IMO with no sugar added. Admittedly the age statement is contentious but you can clearly taste the complexity and influence of the oak. I like it a lot.

    Boy you guys sure look a whole lot like Ricky and Julian from Trailer Park Boys...Anyways, why decant a beer? Isn't the sediment (or at least a little bit) desirable? It seems to me that would mostly just decarb the beer...Either way, cool video! Cheersaroo

    • @TheSingleMaltReview
      @TheSingleMaltReview Před měsícem

      Yeah, we've heard the Trailer Park Boys thing before... But anyway - sediment in beer: Some beers like wits and hazys you do want it because it adds body/flavour/appearance. But when it comes to beers that have been in bottle a year or longer (in this case) then that sediment really only consists of a bunch of long dead yeast cells which will only muddy the flavour.

    I’m still very new to whiskey, but how you’re picking up fruit is beyond me right now 😅, i think i get where the honey comes from, but on the palette i’m getting mostly spice and even tobacco smoke. Is that something that will change over time? I would really love to pick up some fruity notes from that, i just don’t see how it’s possible right now 😅. Great review though. Any beginner tips would be appreciated.

    • @TheSingleMaltReview
      @TheSingleMaltReview Před měsícem

      As you continue to explore different whiskys then your palate will gradually develop. Reading tasting notes and then searching for that flavour helps too, even if it doesn't come through at first. Also, tasting whisky with a lot of water (so it's more like 20%abv rather than 40%) helps spread out the palate and make the individual notes easier to spot.

    Which rum do You think is better this one or the Flor de Cana 18? 🇳🇱

    • @TheSingleMaltReview
      @TheSingleMaltReview Před 2 měsíci

      That depends on what you're after really. The Flor de Cana presents a much more conventional rum profile, whereas this Angostura is extremely tropical fruit focused. I suppose you'd call the Flor De Cana the 'safe' pick, of the two.

About half a bottle gone. 6 months on & its flat. It's lost its spring in its step. For now its like a blend between Caol Ila & Chivas 18 ( blend I do from time to time). What sets these Renegade rums apart is how broad a spectrum of flavours they get across, and the remarkable impact they have. Older rums (Foursquare is a great example) fall into a narrower range of classic rum characters, and are significantly more mellow due to the longer time in cask.

    Serge on Whiskyfun has been blown away by many of Renegade's releases, and so have I. Mark Reynier has to put up with a lot of accusations of being bonkers by many in the trade, yet the results in bottle keep showing he's on to something. I'm also not surprised you do not find much agricole rhum in NZ as we here in the UK are finding less and less. It has a huge following in France for obvious reasons, and they keep the good stuff for themselves (Neisson especially). If you guys can find the 'Pearls' bottling of Renegade, it is well worth getting one. Keep up the good work on the show!
