Ha. I do appreciate a bit of deviousness.
You guys are doing well. Blind samples are hard... I'm doing a blind advent calendar as well and it's really an exercise. So far I've done well picking category and casking, and reasonably well guessing proof, but picking a distillery is a coup and picking a bottle is basically a miracle. 😅

Lads, have you not read your Tintin books with their "identical twins" Thomson and Thompson?🙃

High Coast-Dalvve sherry influence bottling is very good and kind of High Park-ish. Too bad it’s a one and done and they only made a few thousand bottles

I know Thomson is our best known local producer but in my (admittedly limited) experience with them I haven't been impressed. I'm pretty sure I remember trying the manuka smoked offering from them and it was absolutely gross.

I found the first editions of their manuka smoked to be a little off too, but they've come an extremely long way in recent years, so I'd recommend another look if you get the chance.

Thomson is one of New Zealand’s most interesting distillers. Their single cask editions, and the Five is one of those, are noteworthy. You guys should try Zeitgeist, the 2nd Edition of which is still available and Cask Martin, which has been matured in a French Oak 2nd fill NZ Pinot Noir cask. I tried both the Five & Cask Martin at Punky Brewster in Addington a few weeks ago. I have to admit that I didn’t like Thomson the first time I tasted it, but their 1st Edition Zeitgeist in 2018 really made me sit up and take note. My impression is that in the 5 years since they have been honing their craft and improving in quality. That said, I have never been a fan of the Makunka Smoke.
