Chinese Diesel Air Heaters no 19. Motorhome Install Part 2
In this video I go through the fuel system, electrical system and test running.
FUEL SYSTEM
In most installs of this type the fuel pump is roughly at the same level as the fuel tank so I personally use normal 4mm fuel hose from the fuel tank to a shut off valve to a fuel filter to the fuel dosing pump. In all cases the dosing pump should be as close to the fuel tank as possible.
From the fuel dosing pump you should only use hard narrow bore fuel hose or tubing. To protect the delivery fuel line and to prevent the dosing pulses being transmitted into the frame of the caravan or motor home, the hard nylon tubing should be inserted in some resilient material such as 6mm or 8mm fuel hose, garden hose or as in this case some vinyl tubing.
In this install I used 6mm bore vinyl tubing just so I could see the fuel dosing bubbles travel along the fuel line as it was a long delivery line and took quite a lot of manual dosing to get the fuel from the pump to the heater. It would take a significant number of aborted starts if you used the heater to prime the system.
There is confusion between what is hose and what is tubing. In general, hose is measured on the inside and is often stated as "nominal bore" This means the bore is approx, not exact along its length. Tubing is measured on the outside and is an exact measurement along its length.
In just about every vehicle install you can not just "T" into the fuel line and must install a separate fuel pick up line or use a separate fuel tank. In many commercial European vehicles they come as standard with a blanked off separate fuel pick up for just this purpose.
In Jens case she had a fuel gauge issue and was advised it was a sender unit that required replacing, and to do this the dealership needed to drop the tank. I suggested to her while the tank was out to have a separate fuel stand pipe installed. The dealership said they did this and charged her $100 on top of the $1,200 for the fuel sender replacement and labour. I thought this was a good price to install a stand pipe. Some months later when I installed the heater I found that this VW Crafter already had a welded in aux fuel pick up fitting so Jen was actually charged just to tag the fitting. After this I tested both the fuel pump and the fuel sender unit in the replaced yellow module (I asked Jen to request the old part.... so I could play with it). I could find nothing wrong here. The fuel pump worked and the gauge sender unit appeared sound. With no manual I did not know the correct readings, but it gave linear ohm readings, as a sender unit should, so I suggested to Jen that I suspected her intermittent fuel gauge issues may not be in the tank sender unit and the problem may lie elsewhere, perhaps lose or corroded wiring or an actual gauge issue in the cab. This proved to be true and the motorhome had to go back to the dealer again at a later date. Jen chose not to claim a refund for the work done previously. She went to a respected dealership, the mechanic was young and inexperienced and perhaps she did not want him to lose his job during these Covid times. I tend to agree, but if it was a sole trader mechanic, I would strongly suggest she seek recourse.
WIRING
All the heaters I have seen come with bare basic wire size. If you extend the wire loom you MUST increase the wire size. In my opinion you should also connect the heater direct to the battery and not to the van distribution box. The heater requires around 10 amps at a minimum of 12 V at the glow plug to start and if you connect to most van distribution boxes you will get excessive voltage drop if the vehicle engine is not running or the solar is not working, The the most likely time you will start the heater is when you are parked up in the evening.
You MUST install a fuse in the power line as close as possible to the battery, and you should install a fuse in the fuel dosing line close to the heater ECU (which sends power to the pump)
I also suggest you install a master heater power shut off switch in a place where it is unlikely to be turned off accidentally.
I hope this video is of some help to the DIY installer.

    Why not leave off the hose and just put the filter directly on the air inlet? Is there a particular reason why they cannot be done?

      You could do that, but you would need a custom metal filter so the exhaust heat does not melt it. JMcK

    Thanks for your input. Interesting stuff, these heaters, for those that have a technical interest. Don’t get me wrong, a 2 kw heater has a place in many installs, but my view is it is better, noise wise, to have a bigger heater running slow, rather than a small heater running flat out to produce the same heat. Cheers. JMcK

    Thanks for that info and link. Fuel consumption is totally dependent on the pump dose volume and Hz rate. When comparing heaters you also need to look at the output air temperature and output air volume. Thanks for your input. JMcK

    Hey John, just been and looked at a video on fuel consumption for a 2Kw heater czcams.com/video/iuEE-PC2dlE/video.html His findings are completely the opposite, and at maximum output, his heater used exactly HALF (200ml/hour) the amount of diesel of a 5Kw heater. I watched another video a week or so ago of fuel consumption on a 5Kw heater on full blast and it was 400 ml/hour. So seems there's a huge difference in fuel consumption between different 2Kw heaters. Some are throwing diesel $$$ out the window while others are using a proportionate amount relative to their output.

  • @Mancavedweller1
    @Mancavedweller1 Před 10 dny

    Thanks very much John, fantastic information. The first thing that shocked me with the 2Kw was the main inlet fan being the same diameter, yet the housing body being so close to the outside of the fan. Looks like that alone would restrict the airflow. You can see the much larger space around the fan in the 5Kw model. I've just bought an "8Kw" heater (I knew it would only be really 5Kw), and was also going to buy a 2Kw for my boat cabin, but now I wont do that. An interesting question is, "Where is the extra heat "vanishing" to" ??? If the same amount of fuel is being consumed, and the burn is very efficient, resulting in minimal CO, then the same amount of heat MUST be being produced in the burn chamber. I wonder if it's all going out the exhaust ???????? Might be worthwhile checked the exhaust temperature too. Of course the heat would be a combination of exhaust air flow and temperature, so to get accuracy both would have to be measured, but that might melt your anemometer LOL. I wonder if the smaller fan rotates faster and move air through the burn chamber faster, and thus give higher velocity air out the exhaust.

Look for any fuel problems, eg filter, pump orientation etc 2. Overheating. Are you running it at full power? 3 Low voltage. A very common problem I see. Hi there It is ok using normal fuel hose from tank to pump, but from pump to heater, unless a VERY SHORT run, it is much better to use narrow bore hard nylon fuel hose. In these heaters the pump “pulses” diesel to the heater burner atomisation screens. Soft fuel hose from pump to heater absorbs these pulses resulting in poor atomisation and carbon build up in the burner. When sufficient carbon has built up heater won’t work. JMcK

I have made a lead with a simple micro switch which I turn on and off for when I want to send fuel down a long delivery line in initial start up. If I remember right you can see it in motorhome video. (Made Six years ago now). JMcK

    @johnmck1147 could you shed light on 16:01 why the incoming pos wire need to be protected by a fuse?

    • @johnmck1147
      @johnmck1147 Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Jay, It is good practice to ALWAYS fuse every positive wire close to the battery. Its main purpose is to protect the wire loom. If you have some failure short in the heater, or even a wire chafe somewhere in the wire loom, you will have significant current flow in the circuit, causing massive heating, which will, not can, cause the wire protective coating to melt and catch fire. @@johnmck1147Thanks. The fuse and fuse holder are not clear in the video. Could you give more details on them? The circuits in my application are mostly 15amp dc.

      Hi Jay, just mount a simple in line fuse holder in the positive cable going to the battery. Close to the battery is better. A 15 amp fuse is a good rating for these heaters, and is what I use. Cheers. JMcK

    So do you recommend installing a filter prior to the pump? Or getting a pump that has a filter in it?

    • @johnmck1147
      @johnmck1147 Před 2 měsíci

      Definitely an external filter before the pump. JMcK

    Hi John, Really appreciate your effort in all these videos. It gives many of us "instant knowledge" to tackle our own foray into diesel heaters. I was wondering if you could expand on connections of exhaust piping. You covered connection of fuel quite well and it would be nice to see your take on the best way to connect the exhaust pipe to muffler, bend the piping, extensions etc. The pipes that come with the kit are hard to interconnect and I have seen a suppliers manual that suggest cutting a slot in pipes prior to connection to allow "pull down" by the clamp. With your experience would be good to see what you think is best for sealing and longevity. Great videos, thank you again.

      Hi There, You can cut slots in the exhaust pipe end to allow joining. Use exhaust sealer or high temperature silicone to make the join gas proof. You can also use a short length (50 mm) of the right size copper, aluminium or stainless steel pipe to make a joiner, using high temp silicone to seal. JMcK

    Thanks again for another very informative video. I have a suggestion/question. For those of us with Webasto heaters, we sure could use another series on them. Granted, the here will be a lot of overlap, but maintenance and controllers will be very informative. Thanks you.

    I have the full function control have recently had issues with it going blank and shutting off the heater I know the power is fine the screen will come back on randomly. I’ve hard wired the plugs still has not fixed it

      Hi Andrew, If you have double checked the wiring, and you have adequate wire size, not the thin cheap stuff that comes with many heaters, and you have more than 12V at the heater, you possibly have a bad controller. If the heater is new, please ask for a replacement. If heater is old, you can buy spare controllers on eBay. JMcK

    hi John, we have this heater in our RV and our Truck heating isnt working and I am wondering if it is ok to have this heater going while we drive when its winter ? Or is that dangerous?

    • @johnmck1147
      @johnmck1147 Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Michelle, I have to be careful with questions like this in these sue everyone times. You must make your own decision. But, I personally see no safety issue here, and we do use our heater on the boat while sailing, and can use the heater in the motorhome while motoring. A good way for us to keep the “house” environment warm. You may have an issue with heater operation if your heater exhaust is oriented wrongly (forward facing) and forward moving vehicle air can force its way up the exhaust pipe, disrupting the heater burn. Cheers. JMcK
