Chinese Diesel Air Heaters - Part 10 - Special tools, Tongue in cheek

  • This is a bit of a tongue in cheek reply to ribbing comments I have received from video no 9 about my special tools. However there are also some serious bits in the video as well.
    If you have carbon and soot build up in these heaters, particularly in the atomizing screen and in the little igniter breather hole, the heater will not start.
    There are two major causes for soot and carbon buildup in these heaters -
    1. Poor instillation with restrictions in the burner intake air, and restrictions and back pressure issues in the exhaust.
    2. Burning different types of oil and oil mixtures in these heaters.
    Burning engine oil, vegetable oil, whale oil, snake oil, alligator oil or toad oil, direct or in a diesel mix is a sure way to set yourself up for future problems as all oils produce large amounts of soot and carbon residue when they burn. This soot build up will prevent the efficient operation of these heaters, and in serious cases require a full burner replacement.

    🤣 Fantastic! Great breakdown of tools too 🙂
    Good to know about the oil. I had read somewhere about having two tanks and switching between pure diesel, and a 50/50 oil diesel mix, and then back to diesel before shutting off, which I may try.

    Thank you John,
    Great vid... had issues with my 5kw not firing right and exhaust pushing massive white smoke.
    I've took it heater apart and noticed a lot of built up inside the combustion chamber.
    Also around the glow plug and the burner screen.
    I've clean it with engine cleaner and put everything back together... took about 2 hour.
    Thumbs up John.... it worked out great and now my heater is back n running.
    Thank you so much for your vid.

    Absolutely love your tut's on these machines. I'm not a brown noser by any means, but I hang off yt waiting for your next one. Wonder if there's enough content to demonstrate how much a rise in temperature you can attain in a given (enclosed) area? I spose that could be worked out given the data already known. Maths wasn't my best subject at school, but I suppose we know the heat output and the area to be heated, and I suppose the ambient temp would be needed too. I only ask because I have high hopes of this little 5KW heater keeping my large polyhouse (200qm) at over 12degC during the coldest days in winter. Coldest day is +2 so hopefully won't be a problem. many, many thanks.

    I was pokin' fun at you pokin' fun at things. We don't have a lot of 'gators here in Virginia, but I agree 'gator oil would be pretty slick stuff. I had to drain a tank of home heating oil and have it stored in plastic 5-gal. kerosene cans. I am planning to use it in the Chinese heater I just bought. From a lubricity standpoint, do you see any problems using regular home heating oil?

    • @johnmck1147
      @johnmck1147  Před rokem

    I John. I have watched all your videos. Thank you for making them. What is your summation on these machines. This may have been covered before.
    A caravan repair man saw I had purchased one of these and said that they are dangerous and should not be installed. I am a bit worried now. I can’t see any reports that they are unsafe.
    What’s your comment on this.
    Thanks.

    • @johnmck1147
      @johnmck1147  Před 4 lety +4

      Hi Slade,
      What reason did your Caravan man give for that statement?
      These Chinese Diesel Air heaters are almost a direct knock off copy of the German Eberspacher heater, and these have been around for decades.
      In my opinion these Eberspacher copy heaters are excellent and very safe heaters, if installed correctly and operated correctly.
      These heaters are so cheap compared to the genuine heater it has opened up a market for the masses. But those who buy these heaters are unlikely to spend many times the heaters cost to have them installed professionally. A number of these DIY people make some serious install and operation mistakes, and then blame the heaters.
      The main reason I did this series is to try and give some guidance and knowledge to the self installer.
      However doing things wrong like using the wrong fuel line, poor service maintenance (see video about gaskets), bad install or operation can cause safety issues. Just like everything else in life, be it making coffee, or setting a mouse trap.
      Cheers. JMcK

    Nevertheless, I would like some expert advice. I’m thinking about mounting my diesel heater under the floor (exterior).
    Is there any cons? What about the inlet of cold air?
    Best regards!

    • @johnmck1147
      @johnmck1147  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Ricardo,
      There is no “one way only” instillation of these heaters. Yes you can mount it under the floor, providing you can give the heater protection.
      Under the floor of what? A vehicle, a house, a cabin, a caravan etc?
      There is no issue drawing cold air from outside rather than reheating internal air. Some people prefer heating fresh air, even though it is less efficient.
      The main issue is heater protection. In a vehicle, is it protected from road debris etc?
      You also will need a filter screen on the air inlet to keep out any critters from the heat exchanger.
      Cheers. JMcK

    John, I am curious how the fuel is introduced into the heater, haven'ttaken mine apart as it runs fine. Does the fuel drip/squirt directly on to the screen before entering the combustion chamber and under what appropriate pressure? Once burning, does the fuel still pass on/over the screen. If so, it would seem the flame is originating on the screen then expanding into the combustion chamber. Is this so? Keep up the GREAT analysis, your work is being recognized as the best available.

    • @johnmck1147
      @johnmck1147  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi Robert, I will go into this deeper in a future video, but there is a second large atomising screen around the main burn chamber. First the glow plug ignites the diesel/air mix at the small screen then the flame ignites the main burner which acts like a big blow torch. More info in a later video. J

    hi john I want to put the heater under the floor of the caravan with just the hot air going into the caravan I have some question to ask, is alright to put the heater in a metal tool box and if so will it get to hot, because I want to seal the box so no dirt gets in, is there any down side to having it under the caravan ,all so you mention some were on your videos which I can not fine, about a facebook site were I can talk to people that have them set up like this I'am eager to hear from you as I'am ready to install it now thank you john

    • @johnmck1147
      @johnmck1147  Před 3 lety

      Hi Denis, if done right you can put the heater under the caravan in a box.
      1. The caravan needs to be high enough so there is enough room and the heater doesn't hit the road.
      2. A sealed box is ok as the heater cools from air moving over the heat exchanger, and the metal box will also dissipate heat, but you will need some air gap around the heater, say 40mm to 50 mm.
      3. Where is the inlet air going to come from if you seal the box? Are you going to suck it down from inside the caravan?
      4. You could consider mounting the heater on its side under the van, but only the side that has the glow plug on the top. This way the combustion air inlet and the exhaust would exit on the side and not out the bottom giving the exhaust and inlet some protection.
      5. Make sure you have a screen on the combustion air inlet to keep out bugs, and in dusty conditions you may need a foam type filter.
      6. Keep the exhaust away from the combustion air inlet.
      Good luck, Cheers. JMcK

    Just got a new one from ebay and im not getting power to the controller. Checked fuse and I'm getting 12v to the ecu but no voltage to the controller? What else can i Check

    • @johnmck1147
      @johnmck1147  Před 3 lety

      Hi Erinson,
      If your heater follows normal protocol, the controller wires will have a triangle plug and socket.
      There will be three wires, generally red, black and blue.
      The blue wire is the sense/data wire, the red is 12+, and the black 12V -. Put your multimeter on the red and black wires coming from the heater. Check the voltage.
      No voltage you have issues with the plug, wiring or ECU.
      Voltage present, you most likely have a bad connection or a dud controller.
      Also check that the wires line up correctly in the plug and socket. Very occasionally the the polarity of the wires is reversed.
      I hope this is of some help. JMcK

Install pump as close to fuel tank as possible, install pump in position that it has less than a meter of head and less than a meter of suck. Install pump with an upwards angle of greater than 15%.

    • @johnmck1147
      @johnmck1147  Před 3 lety

      Hi Bruce,
      If the heater actually starts up and runs for a bit it is unlikely to be the glow plug. If the glow plug does not light up the heater will not start.
      Is this a new heater, or an old heater that used to run ok in the past?
      If a new heater, they will blow smoke on first couple of starts until any big air bubbles go.
      Now look at the fuel delivery system.
      Are there any small leaks in the fuel line?
      Do you see any big (not little) bubbles in the fuel line?
      Have you got good fuel hose connections? (No leaks)
      Are you using thin bore hard nylon fuel hose on the delivery side of pump to heater?
      If an old heater that was running well in the past.
      Check for clogged fuel filtrer.
      Check fuel line for any leaks.
      Strip heater down and check for carbon buildup in burner chamber. Clean.
