"The Bren had one problem, it was too accurate" BZZZZZT WRONG. Accurate fire control + Accurate rounds on target = Dead Jerries and FAR more effective supression. Consider the nature of the weapon in question. Would you be keen to leap out of your foxhole, fire at the enemy or do anything particularly effective, if every 10 seconds or so a couple of rounds crack over your head and thump into the ground a foot away? Troops trained on modern MGs are painfully obvious when they conflate the doctrine for a belt fed GPMG (MAG, MG42 etc) with older, magazine fed LMGs. A GPMG is king of the beaten zone at long range, providing sustained supression or destruction of enemy troops and materiel with long, regular bursts of fire, often over a large area but in a smaller zone than you'd think (especially if an SFMG tripod is used). A mag fed LMG (such as the Bren) is at its best providing accurate 2-3 round bursts at fairly sedate intervals to destroy enemy soldiers and supress firing/observation points. GPMG can do both, hence... General Purpose. Simple as.

Reminds me of when got to talk to an old timer who flew Stirlings in the war. He was about 19 and put in charge of a 4 engine bomber. He would have had to remember a maze of instructions about getting the aircraft off the ground loaded with fuel and bombs. One mistake and all of them would be dead in an av gas funeral pyre. The grunts on the ground would also time some the bombs up so they would explode at a given time. All is well if nothing happens but if a bomb gets caught up you wont know if it is a timed bomb or not and you and the crew can only praise the lord when you get back on the ground in England. Crazy stuff that our youth used to be able to do. It was in fact the greatest generation.

A good friend of ours came over from Mauritius and joined the R.A.F.
