I worked in East Germany after the Berlin wall came down in 1989, i worked with a Scotsman who sounded just like Sean Connery but looked nothing like him. He owned a Trabant, picked it up for next to nothing and drove it back to Scotland at least once a year and back to Magdeburg. One winter, we put a hose pipe running cold water over his Trabant for around an hour or two and it stuck his car to the road with ice. The next day he picked up a malet and broke off the ice around the drivers door, got inside it and started the engine after two turn's of the key it started and an hour later it was free of the ice............and he was driving to work......i bet to this day he still owns this car. If you are ever in Scotland and see a trabant take a moment and ask the driver if he was ever in Magdeburg, East Germany.... and if he sound's like Sean connery you will know for sure that what i have told you all today is true. Enjoy..

We had one like this back in Hungary when I was a kid, but the estate one. I even remember the reg number of it. When I was about 8, we rebuilt it with my father. Good old times... I miss them both

Literally doing the same thing. Only got into TT because of Guy. Such a great TT. Le Mans this year was amazing as well.
What the f Guy in a Trabant??? I never thought I’d see that lad in a Trabant, this is unreal. I had lots of fun in my youth in that Trabant funny as fuck!!! We fitted four big blokes of us and went to the club with it, of course we didn’t make it to the club but the Laughs that we had with that thing. I’ll never forget it!

Literally means 'racing cardboard box' because the body is made from some bizarre plasticized cardboard.
The very last series of Trabants after the collapse of the iron curtain got a 1.1L 4pot from the contemporary VW Polo producing a whopping 42hp. It was made for only 12 months.

I remember a story aka Joke about Trabants that crossed into West Germany after the wall went down and it goes like this the East German driver had a breakdown and the closest mechanic was a BMW specialist who agreed to have a look. A few hours later he came back and it was fixed.
He drove off went for 20 minutes and it stopped so with some more stops he made his way back to the BMW mechanic who when he arrived said Oh I know whats wrong I fixed it by fitting a BMW Wiper Motor to replace your faulty engine but I forgot to take it off the intermittant setting

We had one when I was kid, I hated that plastic smell.
I thought Trabants were made of fiberglass
I would of put a modern 1,000cc BMW RR motor in it 👍

Of course, this is hardly "restoring a Trabant" as previous titles claimed. It's creating a new car with a Trabant body. Technically impressive, but it has nothing to do with what a Trabant is.
Don't be silly. It's a Trabant monocoque, modified Trabant engine, and the structural parts of the Trabant suspension. This is little different to creatining a race car from any other production car.

But apart from that technicality, it just isn't a restoration. Kudos to the technical skill on display, and call it a modification or a renovation, but if the majority of parts is fundamentally different from the stuff you began with it's not a restoration.
Throw in honda nsr 500cc 2stroke race engine and call it productive day 😂😂😂

I love Guy Martin and the TT etc. BUT the Trabant racing happened over a year AGO! WTF. Only showing it now. I AM a British Citizen BUT I am currently in another country and so I am "not allowed!" to view Channel 4 content (unless I get a gyppo VPN of course). This really pees me off. I can't even pay for and view genuine content but I do get drip fed rubbish over a year later...
