The man is a national treasure. He reminds me so much of Fred Dibnah, hard working, enthusiastic about everything and a very nice bloke. Absolutely amazing man that I would love to meet one day for sure!
I had the pleasure of meeting Guy once - it was at the Lincoln steam rally a few years back. I was looking round a stall and my Mrs tapped me on the back and pointed out that I was stood right next to him but facing the wrong way. Like an excited schoolgirl I asked to shake his hand and like the gent he is he agreed. I would never normally ask but this man is a true hero of mine and I couldn't stop myself. We exchanged pleasantries and each went our own way. I kind of felt bad for interrupting his day but it meant so much to see the man in person and tell him how much I love his work. The bloke is a total legend.

My ex-wife grew up in Prague - they had a Trabant which they went out on weekends and she said it was a great little car. Love the smell of two strokes.
Thinking the race officials could have given the three Trabants a winner take all lap after the end of the race. What would it have hurt n believe the crowd would have appreciated the little angry bees!!!

Think the race officials should have put more thought into the race before hand. Pretty poor show of organization. Bloody cool little cars though.

How were they meant to know how slow they are ? They've never raced in the UK before....
@@edwardfletcher7790the cars have known statistics on paper. Plus inspection for entry and qualifying. That word alone should have been enough for the officials to know what call to make before letting them race at all.

Would love to see Guy in a time attack race. Or building a car and racing through the different classes.
He built the fastest van in the world, or wait, the van did not finish a race, or set a record. And still he made a documentary about accomplishing nothing.

That is silly, to let them start and then pull them out. One could easily calculate the speed difference beforehand,
It's almost as if they made a mistake in working out the handicap and thought the best way to fix the problem once it was obvious was the screw over the Trabants.

@@_zzpza Yes, who will ever know? I also wonder why after seven months of work they couldn't have a 600cc two stroke engine produce more than a measly 60hp.
Guy must have ridden bikes with engines of comparable volume that had twice the power and a quarter of the weight of that Trabant.

A joke told in Germany just after the wall came down and Trabants started flooding west German streets:
A Trabant stops next to a cow pat. The cow pat asks "What are you then?" The Trabant replies: "I'm a car!"
"If you are a car, I'm a pizza!"
My cousin lived in Germany at that time. One of the big driving hazards was that a Trabant would try to join the autobahn, despite 100+kph differences in speeds.
@@DaveOBrien Back then cars with that speed limit were not not _that_ uncommon. There still were quite a few Citrôen 2CV and Fiat 126 about and many transporters that barely made it to 110kph. It's a myth that all cars here are speeding, most will go at around 120kph. Maybe 1% really go 200+
Me, I did less than 1000Km of my some 150000Km driving at such speeds.
The real problem with the Trabant was that it was the abomination it just was. In a crash test in 1990 one just literally fell apart on hitting the barrier. In a car vs. car crash test, a contemporary car just drove through the Trabant. It was a death trap.
The joke was at the time in East Germany that you could get a sporty Trabant, it had a pair of running shoes in the trunk.

You'd lose the two-stroke feel of it. Put a turbo-charged RD350LC engine in there. Should be mental enough.
If you want to get a small car with a fast bike engine, Honda Beat or most of the Japanese Kei cars are the thing for you.

That is a shame, you can't tell me that no one thought the trabant wasn't going to pissed all over by twin cam escorts, that folks is a joke..someone should be held responsible for that decision

i'll say it because no one else has. the track officials made a mistake in handicapping. i fail to believe they would condescend that the drivers were not skilled to handle new conditions. "it's too dangerous" is a direct reflection of their opinion of the drivers. or someone must have complained. "after three laps"? makes them look incompetent.
they were concerned for the safety of the Trabant drivers. not known for collision safety.
anyone else notice Guy taking the outside of turns to allow room for faster cars?

John Surtees for sure but what about Greg Handsford? Rode 250 and 350 cc with 2nd in 250 cc and 3rd in 350 cc World Championship in both 1978 and 79 before switching to driving V8 touring cars, Mazda RX7s and RS500 Sierras in Australia. Died in 1995 due to injuries sustained in a crash in a Ford Mondeo in Supertouring race at Phillip Island.

Gearbox doesn’t have much to do with it being slow. It’s only got 60hp and an old design of inefficient motor.

@@m.anejante1687 Well, I’m not sure what your issue with the gearbox is. It’s a traditional 4 speed manual gearbox. I assume you’re thinking this car has the semi auto style gearbox, which it doesn’t, as Guys car has a clutch, so again, unless you’re referring to the weird shift pattern, what is your problem with the conventional clutch and 4 speed manual gearbox?

Das ist auf keinen Fall ein echter Renntrabant . So wie der am Anfang qualmt ist schon ersichtlich das da etwas nicht stimmt. Ist der Motor überhaupt mit 2 Vergasern ausgestattet worden?
Erklären Sie bitte, was ein Auto zu einem „echten Rennwagen“ macht. es raucht, weil es nicht sein Motor ist, er muss ihn schützen.
