  • Made back in 2018 for Channel 4 by the production company that produces all of Guy's adventures. This is the story of the 51st Highland Division, the forgotten heroes of Dunkirk who were left in France when Dunkirk was evacuated, and ordered to fight on against Hitler's war machine, in the face of overwhelming odds. While not featuring Guy, this is still a proper documentary that needs to be seen. To watch in full, head over to All4 - www.channel4.com/programmes/d...
    Enjoy...

My Grandad was at st Valery with his regiment The Seaforth Highlanders where he was captured and marched to Stalag in Poland. I have his diaries that he kept until the end of the war and it sounded bloody miserable. Hats off to that generation, I'll always remember their sacrifice and be very grateful.

I began Scottish Country Dancing in the US in the late 70s. One of the dances that was always popular was (and likely still is) The Reel of the 51st Division. Danced with many ex-pat Scots of that generation and the story was the dance was devised by POWs and was useful for keeping warm while in the bag. My great friend, Dave Aiton has a photo of himself leading 100 pipers down Princes Street in Edinburgh in a victory parade post war. Cheers to your grandfather & to you for keeping his memory fresh!

My Uncle, Sgt 7260432 A G White RAMC was with the 51st. He managed to escape St Valery by "borrowing" a small French fishing boat. He was later captured by the Italians in the desert campaign in 1942, then transferred to the Germans. He spent the rest of the war as a POW in a camp in Poland until they were put on a death march to Germany, as the Russians were taking Poland. He died in the late 1980's.
When I was a teenager in the early 1980's he gifted me the dog tags he wore during his service, they are my most prized possession.
    We will remember them ❤.

One of my Great-uncles on my mother's side was killed at St Valery during that action. He was 31 years old and left behind a young wife and 3 young children. Rip L. Sjt Albert Percival, Gordon Highlanders. I visited the cemetary where his grave is during a visit in summer 2022.

My Dad, Bert Gilbert, a Londoner and Gunner with the Royal Artillery, was at St Valery, attached to the 51st Highland Division. He was captured and eventually imprisoned at Stalag VIIIB in Poland. He survived the war having been liberated by Patten from, I believe, Stalag 383 near Munich.

Also need to remember there weee many thousands of BEF left behind after the Dunkirk evacuation, many got to St Nazaire only to lose their lives aboard the troopship Lancastria when she was bombed by the Luftwaffa. This disaster is still the greatest maritime loss of life ever. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Lancastria

The 51st Highland Division was nowhere near Dunkirk which is the simple reason why they were not evacuated with the BEF, it is a bit strange to qualify them as heroes of a city in which they never set foot. The retreat of the BEF was covered by the French army, at Dunkirk the French fought until the last bullet to serve as rearguard and allow the evacuation, these are the forgotten heroes of Dunkirk. Also, this documentary perpetuates some myths, such as the idea that the Germans bypassed the Maginot Line and did not fight to break through.
