Was St. Gregory Palamas a Thomist?
Some people who style themselves as Orthodox (alongside some Roman Catholics) have been arguing that St. Gregory Palamas and the historical teaching attributed to St. Gregory Palamas was in fact "Thomistic", or at the very least, contrary to the teaching of the distinction between essence and energy and an invention of what they style as "Neo-Palamites".
In this video I analyze the main evidence for their claim, and prove that it in fact refutes their own position.

GUYS I asked chat gpt on the the trinitarian teaching between the east and west which would it pick criteria on consistency and this is what i got and i quote: " If forced to pick one based on personal preference for a balanced approach to theology, I might lean towards the Eastern tradition. This preference stems from the Eastern emphasis on the relational and experiential aspects of the Trinity, which can provide a more holistic and less abstracted understanding of God that is deeply rooted in the early ecumenical councils and the church fathers' teachings. However, it's important to note that both traditions offer profound insights and are more complementary than contradictory."🥲😏😆😮

Wow, the essence-energy described in such as way, (6:25) from Synodal Tome Paragraph 27, makes so much sense to me! It makes the essence-energy distiction even more neccessary and really does show that the patristic saints did teach the distinction. I don't know why Thomists/Catholics are so determined to make God's Essence and Energies identical: - The Son comes from the Father, the Father is that from which the Son comes from, they cannot be identical (modalism). Yet, they are one as they are unified and not seperable. - Likewise, the Energies come from the Essence, and the Essence is that from which the Energies come, they are not identical. Yet, they are one as they are unified and not seperable. Thus, we say the Son is distinct from the Father, not seperate and not identical. Why can't the Catholics/Thomists similarly just accept that the Energies are distinct from the Essence, not seperate and not identical. It makes sense to me. Why don't they get it?

I'd like to be a Christian, but I can't quite get there. I've watched a lot of videos, read a lot of books, and I can't find any answers to the core questions beyond...it doesn't make sense because it is a mystery and you just have to accept that. (Which I'm sure you can appreciate is unsatisfactory to an outsider looking for answers.) Anyhow, thanks for your work. I'll keep watching.

It is quite possible that you've been tought to ask questions that doesn't make sense. E.g. we know that God is Uncreated Being, and that he created everything which came into being by His Will. And someone asks: Wait a minute, and who created God? Do you see how such question exposes the inability to think logically?

Study the Bible, it’s its own best commentary!! You cannot out psychologize the Bible for God not to throw you into hell for all eternity. In other words, you cannot come up with a good enough excuse here and now, so you will not be able to on judgment day. If you say you did not want to be born, God is going to say you should’ve been born again, that means become a Christian so that’s not gonna work. And there are no other excuses try to think of one. So now you know for the first time in your life, that the Bible is smarter than you and it is a steel trap, smarter than all of mankind, What should you do then? So at least investigate and look to see that these things are true, because right now you just learned the Bible is smarter than you, and you will be accountable for your life on judgment day before God! Prophecy, the Bible is 27% prophecy, that’s future history written in advance. God‘s really sticking his neck out to get it cut off if he’s wrong, but he hasn’t been wrong about the thousands of prophecies that were fulfilled, so he’ll be right about the end of the world prophecies as well and you’ll have no excuse on judgment day for not looking for truth! Caveat: you cannot look for God in times of chaos says Isaiah 45:19, so you better do it now. In other words,You’ll be too worried about your own survival when chaos hits, than your eternal destiny! Statistic probability of 40 writers writing the Bible with zero margin of deviation, proves God wrote the Bible through the 40 writers! God authored the Bible! DNA does not auto encrypt, the code writer is outside of the code of the 3300000,000,000 lines of computer code in the human genome of our DNA! So who wrote the code to such sophistication? 1,000,000 seconds is 12 days, 1,000,000,000 seconds is 32 years! That’s the difference between 1 million and 1 billion! One person’s DNA could fill the Grand Canyon up to 50 times full of books. John 21:25 “I suppose everything Jesus did, the world wouldn’t have enough room for the books telling of it.“ this verse would be fulfilled! Psalm 139:16 “in my members you have written many books“! Psalm 139 is about the human body!

The Arian heresy has been around a long time. But it denies the basic revelation that God has made of himself in scripture. The words we use >>Father, Word (Son), Breath (Spirit)>>have been given as sufficient for us human beings, but the reality is divine mystery, far beyond what our limited minds are capable of understanding. The simple revelation is straightforward. The Creator spun the universes into existence out of nothing by Word and Breath. He sustains the created realms moment by moment through the same. He communicates with his creatures through the same. And at the appropriate time, the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Today, the divine Breath dwells with power inside those who will receive him and initiates a new creation.

It's crazy how blatantly some people just lie so I'll comment on some of the commentors that I've blocked. 1) "Pino admits there's a notional distinction": He clearly does not throughout the whole book, as I've quoted the "notional distinction" is just a notional separation of things that are distinct yet united in reality. This guy either was fed this script by some online discord guy or is actually really stupid. 2) "Dr. Bradshaw denies real distinction": The quote is actually him denying thomistic real distinction because it entails separation, in other words he denies applying thomistic metaphysics to St. Gregory Palamas' theology, since they have completely different presuppositions. Ofc once again either a quote from some guy or the guy is flat out stupid, or just an incredibly dishonest person. Moreover, Dr. Bradshaw is quite adamant on the essence energy distinction being a real distinction to the point where he himself like St. Gregory is hesitant to even use the term "conceptual distinction" precisely because of the current misunderstanding some people have. The video itself already sufficiently addresses all of these arguments. And I honestly don't believe that most of the people who refers to these books etc. have actually read or understood what they've read. No wonder when most students in college struggle to read and understand even a 10-15 page text and have to spend an entire lecture just trying to understand one or two pages of text.

if God, the greatest being, is constrained by logic, then that makes logic the greatest being. the most elementary metaphysical analysis yields separate beings for all of God's characteristics. to claim that the characteristics of God somehow count as non-beings is impossible because non-beings don't exist. i suggest all Christians focus on the merely very powerful God of the Bible rather than the problematic omnipotent God of theology.

It really boils down to Orthodox acting like spoiled, self-centered, child. If a Catholic was to say "we have a beautiful blue sky today" the Orthodox would say the sky is green. Get over it, you broke communion by going against the councils. Orthodox always have an excuse. The early eastern church was a heresy factory! Without Rome the east would be Arian!! That is the truth. No Arianism no filioque issue. Take responsibility for your involvement in the issue.

The “heat of the fire is the fire itself?” - Really? This is an illogical and incoherent claim. Heat is produced by fire, and metaphysical causation or priority suggests that the Father actually causes the Son, irrespective of whether this is atemporal or not. This means that the Son lacks aseity though possessing eternality. Then, using “God” in equivocal ways in reference to the Trinity is philosophically plausible but biblically irreconcilable. If the essence is called “God”, and all three distinct divine persons possess the essence of ”fully”, this results in blatant tritheism, doesn’t it?
