Interesting. I love them both, but they look like different people. The muted one looks feminine and the right looks masculine. Just slightly, both could be any gender. But they kind of look like siblings, rather than two versions of the same person. Fascinating. I know this video is 6 years old now, but I’ve just started watercolor painting recently, and this was informative to watch. Thanks!

I only gave 100% at a job when i worked at the dog groomers, pretty much because if I didn't, id prob get bite 😝

Well of course I can give 100% on the thing. but you know what happens to the other things I have or want to do? they get 0%. I am not sure people know what it means to give 100% of your energy for something. And tbh I can't do that for something I don't love. I can't tune out hunger, thirst, sleep, social needs and taking care of myself and living space for just any random thing people tell me I should give my 100%. I can't choose what interest holds me in a death grip so I can't stop. I forget to stop. maybe their 100% doesn't look like self destruction. maybe their 100% is more sustainable than my 100%. I can give a lot. I can be productive in my job. I can do good. but when I do so I can't talk to people. if I talk to people, that's 60% of my 100% gone. poof. my concentration and energy off to the winds of social interaction. I can't do everything I can only do one thing at a time maybe to 80-90% because I kinda like being clean and fed. i want to save my 100% for things that make me happy or are important for me to survive. there's a reason humans usually don't use 100% capacity of their brain or muscle power. if they did it would be self-destructive.

This is something I needed to hear, that I will continue to come back to.

Paper is the number 1 thing I always recommend spending extra money on. It makes such a huge difference having good paper. I have cheap and pricey paints. Paper, for finished pieces is always 100% cotton. Brushes I think are more subjective. We all like different things. Black Velvets were recommended to me when I started. And as a beginner I was not a fan. They were too soft for me.

I was raised by workaholics. They used to tell me that I needed to put 200% effort into everything I did. So that even when I had an off day and wasn't feeling well, I could still give 120%. I also had my first mini stroke at 15 years old. All I can ask people is to not be like me and wait until your health is in jeapordy to start taking your body's needs more seriously. I consider myself lucky to be alive after all the abuse I put my body through. If there's anything I learned from working that hard is that it isn't worth it. I was called lazy more often when I was having paralysis and fainting spells than I am now when I have the energy to force myself to work and choose to rest instead. We were not placed on this earth to work our bodies to the point of failure. If it isn't time sensitive, then dont rush yourself.

yea i worked saturdays while studying and i always gave 120%. It has been burnt into my brain that if i dont give 120% all the time while at work im a failure. I ended up being one of the top employees. i was getting assigned way too much work and had way too many responsabilities for the position i was in. and it messed me up so bad. with uni stress and life stresses and that work situation my body just couldnt handle it anymore. now i quit my job, paused uni in order to heal from a depressive episode only to find out that most of my health stuff doesnt come from depression but im actually chronically ill. giving 120% for 21 years burnt me out and made me so sick that i now have to concider getting assessed for disability status etc. now i have to learn that 30% is my new 120. and that its okay to be this way. its sososososoooo hard. but i got this. and im thankful for you for sharing this and talking about these topics. much love to you <3

I've been trying to make craft videos recently, got a whole bunch of wip projects/videos and its. it is EXACTLY like this. im just rolling with it, embracing it, even. whatever happens happens. If you have a laser printer, it is possible that you might print the lineart on watercolour paper (it worked on mine) You need hot press (the more smooth the better) and set the printer to the absolute thickest setting you have (cardstock or extra thich paper) so the toner 'bakes in.' Then let the toner cool down and it should be good for painting.

I think that when people talk about giving 100% of yourself, they have this capitalistic optimisation mentality. And the reason why this bad is, there is no such a thing as giving all of oneself. 100% of what, your time? you mean not sleeping? 100% of your effort? as measured in what? It's unreasonable as it is unmeasurable. It's setting a goal you'll never reach. It's setting oneself up for being frustrated and never having enough.

Now I'm imagining the tradwives being like "my kids wanted watercolor art for breakfast so I got up early and took the minerals I'd mined that were lying around the house, then ground them with some gum arabic I collected from the trees on our homestead. Then I made paper from our old rags...(etc.)..... And now my kids are enjoying their new art for breakfast :)"

Funny timing. I made way too much charcoal this winter. Mostly willow, but some other woods like grape and fruit tree too. Now I'm spending the summer learning how to use it. Yes please for a video. CZcams doesn't have enough good videos on making drawing charcoal.

I heard that back in the medieval days, to make charcoal people would cut a lot of wood into smaller pieces, put it all in a pile, cover it up with a bunch of dirt leaving a hole at the top for the smoke - kind of like a kiln - burn it, and then wait for all the wood inside to turn into charcoal. Some poor schmucks had to sit and watch over the burning piles to make sure the fire didn’t spread out too much all day and all night. I hope your partner had an easier time with it.

I loved it!!! I have been doing a lot of drawings with crayons in old books because the pressure of digital art being "perfect" was making me feel blocked. Now I draw with the confidence of a child and oh my god, I forgot how fun that is!

I feel you on unnecessary trail blazing! But maybe it wasn't unnecessary, maybe it was exploration and play. Which may not have been the goal of trying this, but can definitely become welcome side goals. Keep at it! I love the embrace of no longer going for perceived perfection for how others have to views you as that.
