    This is my favorite color. It’s a color that resonates so deeply with me but I have the hardest time using it in my paintings. As you said you really need to know your way around values to use it. Probably because it’s so uncommonly found in nature and makes it look unreal. Kinda fantasy or ethereal. That’s probably why the elf theme works so well! 😍 Love the painting.

    I went through a ride with PG7. I thought it was too bright garish, and it took me a long time to realize how beautiful it is in mixed. Ocean Blue is a particularly gorgeous color, and I also love PG16 as an alternative to PB15 :)

    Phthalos are so intense but they can be fun! I like how you used it here. Surprisingly Phthalo green mixed with other pure pigments can make some GORGEOUS greys, browns, and earthy yet colourful tones

    I love this painting, especially its somewhat undefined features and the bloody mouth! It seems like he has quite a story and many thoughts and feelings running through his head.
    My phtalo blue is definitely lime green (I only got one from a 24 pans pre-made set) but I still haven't found any love or use for it.
    I also had a tendency to let pointy ears sneak into my paintings but beyond my love for fantasy, it sometimes felt like I was using like a crutch or an excuse/justification for what I drew. I would draw a character in a romantic type of composition, laid back, gaze going nowhere. Then, bam! Pointy ears, now it's not so boring because it's an elf, and also lying in an artsy position is just what they do. Now that I have more confidence in myself I don't do it as much and when I do, it's really because I feel like it.

    I love phthalo blue. I don't use it that much probably because so many artists talk about how it shouldn't be used, lol. My favorite way to use it is to mix it with good amounts of something like payne's grey or granulating black like lunar black. It gives such a moody/smoky look that is somehow both colorful and dark at the same time. I usually only use it this way in monochromatic or highly limited color palettes. Moody/surreal forested scenes work well painted this way and phthalo green can be used in the same way alongside to add a little color variance.

    At first it was all I used. Then I started using ultramarine blue and I felt like wow! I'm really missing out. At one point I just used to think Pthalo blue was just too strong. But to get certain colours you really need it. It's a colour I still have to learn more about.

  • @Fajman.personal
    @Fajman.personal Před 2 lety

    I definitely relate to the phtalo blue “fear”. My phtalo blue is from QOR, and it's just so darn pigmented and moves around so much, and stains the paper like crazy. It's a beautiful colour, but it just needs to be handled with care. I have been incorporating it more recently, starting to overcome that fear as of recent.

    Pthalo blue has always scared me because it's so so strong! It feels so saturated that it almost hurts my eyes. Lol! But I have tended to use it from the pan, with only a little watering down. Thanks for showing the capabilities of it. Then I realized you were using Ocean blue from Roman Szmal and that's one of my favorites to play with! Lol.

    Pthalo blue is definitely one I avoid because it always seems so neon to me but I should try it more! I really avoid violets and purples all together and often don't have them on my pallette. Pre mixed purples just seem too saturated and many of them aren't light-fast.

    Yeah, I never reach for Phthalo blue. As a matter of fact it wasn’t until recently that it was even on my palette. I had Ultramarine, Prussian, and Turquoise but no Phthalo. It’s on my palette now, both green shade and red shade. I use the red shade more often than the green shade except for mixing greens. It’s still not my favorite but I’m learning. High key colors scare me, lol.

    Pthalo was one of my favourites immediately , it's one of my favourite shades of my favourite colour and it's so nice and vibrant. For me it was the more opaque-ish earthy colours that I had difficulty with. Anything from a yellow ochre to venetian red etc. I loved the way they look on their own but I just couldn't work them into my paintings well because of how different they handle.

    Beautiful painting! Thank you for the video :D
    I can actually relate to not being a big fan of phthalo blue haha. I think in terms of hue it's a little bit too green to fall into the kind of more violet blues that I like such as indanthrene and ultramarine, but also not green enough to match my favorite cobalt teal when diluted. I do have it from the Daniel Smith essentials set though, and I love some of the more yellow greens it can make with their new gamboge. Plus, phthalo blue and potter's pink is also a gorgeous combination.

  • @georgecooper9766

    Phthalo blue has pretty much always been a staple for me since I enjoy cool blue lighting. I used to use Prussian blue a lot more but since having lightfastness issues with it have removed it from my palette and I use phthalo blue to mix a similar colour. Phthalo green was the one it took me a lot longer to work out how to use since it is such an unnatural green but I've since learnt to love neutralised versions of it.

    I used to really struggle with pthalo blue as well, I found it almost too blue. Trying to mix it with other colours never really seemed to work, because the blue was so strong.
    But more recently I have been enjoying the colour for itself, and for the intense colour mixes you get. I think it helps that I’m not trying to paint landscapes with it!
    Amazing painting as always! I loved the elf appearance.

    It's never been my favorite pigment because I like to do a lot of lifting and scrubbing to get texture. I always found it too staining, but both the red and green shades play well with many other pigments. It can be hard to resist. I prefer it as Manganese Blue hue by M Graham. Any phthalo blue mixed with burnt sienna makes insanely beautiful turquoise shades for sea paintings. Love your mastery of values in this lyrical painting.

    Congratulation on your discovery of Thalo Blue.
    I remember when first starting with paints being frustrated by not getting the grassy green I envisioned when mixing yellow and ultramarine blue. It didn't matter how much blue or yellow or even black or white, I still would get that strong and ugly green. I learn to to hate ultramarine blue. Then years later, I started watercolors with Grumbacher Finest Watercolors (not the Academy)and then (maybe by accident) I discovered thalo blue. I mixed it with yellow and whalah my vision was reality. A beautiful grassy green. I then discovered it also makes gorgeous purples and violets.

      I feel like phtalo blue green shade if the closest to a true primary blue (cyan ) you can find in watercolor ! That's why it makes the most vibrant greens and purples/ violet !

      @@Lexouchan When I first discovered Thalo Blue I thought it was a pure blue. Is there such thing as a pure blue, pure red, or a pure yellow?

    • @Lexouchan
      @Lexouchan Před 2 lety

      @@LafayetteLeSaint first of all
      Blue red yellow are not the true primaries :
      The true primary triad is cyan magenta and yellow (that's why they are used in printers)
      In watercolor because we work with pigment and not dye it's a little bit difficult to find "pure primary". My personal combo is Phtalo blue green shade, quinacridone magenta and a middle yellow (I use quinophtalone yellow but there are a lot of good neutral yellows)
      Buts it's still not perfect. That's why a lot of people have a double triad (like a lemon yellow and and Indian yellow, a pink and a red and a ultramarine and a phtalo )

  • @Lexouchan
    @Lexouchan Před 2 lety

    I have always loved Phtalo blue ! Because of its vibrancy, transparency and layerability ! I feel like phtalos are often looked down because of how ""unnatural "" they look. But I think they are essential because you can make dull/ earthy colours with a vibrant colour palettes , but you can't make clear /clean / vibrant colours with a earth tones palette

    everybody starts with Phthalo Blue GS but because it has a habit of yelling at all of your other colors people fall off it for a bit. But most painters I've noticed, even though they have/had soooo much to say about Phthalo Blue, use some kind of Phthalo in their palette anyway.

  • @ThatLazyStray
    @ThatLazyStray Před 2 lety

    I'm still not a big fan oh pthalo blue, I think it has a tendency to bully other colours on the pallet and due to it's staining properties, limits the amount of techniques I can do with it. I also find ultramarine to be a bit dull in my opinion (although i do like schmincke's ultra fine ultramarine). I tend to use cobalt turquoise and Prussian blue instead.

      Make colour swatches of all your colours one by one from thick consistency to very watery and do monochromatic studies. It helps a ton. Don’t be afraid to add very dark thick mixture, instead of many middle values and use the grayscale on your phone camera to check how are you doing once you start introducing different colours and to imagine them in monochrome. I think that this will help you to get better faster with values.
      Good luck

  • @alonaportiannikova9849

    I still can’t stand it. I opted for pb16 instead and I also use ultramarine, indigo (single pigment from Shinhan, I think) and indathrone blue, of course. I tried pb15 and all it’s hues, tried replacing it with prussian blue (which I adore) too. But I just find it too difficult to work with: it’s too staining and too punchy, I couldn’t find an opposite for it to neutralise it completely. Meh.
