I don’t think anyone would have thought of “handsome squidward,” tic toc filters, or ring lighting until you brought it up, lol. I’ve still got a few minutes left of the video so I’m interested on what the final piece will look like.

My Two Year Old (coming in at the end of the video): "Oh no! It's sad. We can make it better."
But seriously, I LOVE the somber mood this has. While watching you paint the eyes, I had some flashbacks to how I felt while reading To Kill A Mockingbird and about Boo Radley. Gosh, it has been ages since I read that book, but the feeling it evoked for me came back so strongly.
Anyways, random rambling over. Beautiful art! Have a lovely day :D

I never would have thought that this was done using the Zorn palette because of how cool the overall painting is, but I guess it makes perfect sense. I'm just so used to seeing all these warm, aged looking paintings using Zorns palette. This is refreshing.

Beautiful! I hadn't noticed it til you mentioned tiktok, but this reminds me so much of the trend where people turn the lights off, put their ring light behind their backs, and play the "I love you for infinity" song. I always thought the lighting in those tiktoks would make for great art! And here is the proof!

The Ivory black he used, which is no longer available, had a distintive blue undertone, which he actually used to create blues, when mixed with white! His Ivory Black served as a black and a blue! Today we can use some sort of Paynes Gray, one thats very dark in its mass tone to substitute his Ivory Black. Cause OUR Ivory Black is not HIS Ivory Black.

Also, I do get what you mean when going from the jelly gouache to tubes. It feels SO weird lol. Over the summer I worked a lot with the jelly gouache and then when I went over to my tubes again recently it just turned out terribly lmao. Kind of like what happens when you do gouache for a while and then do watercolors or vice versa.

The advice I've heard for white and black has always been that 1. White is, by definition, opaque. You loose the transparency that is characteristic for watercolours by using white pigments and it makes mixing a lot harder. So you should not start out and definitely not get in the habit of using white to create light colours. Obviously that doesn't mean there aren't situations where you want to use white specifically. It's just the exception to the rule, not the rule. And similarly 2. Blacks, like ivory black, should not be your go-to solution to create dark colours because they are generally (intentionally) very flat, and will make your painting look flat and dull compared to mixing your own dark (or black) colours from the colours you are already using. Again, doesn't mean you should never use it, just that it shouldn't be your go to standard and you should know why you are choosing to use that.
The only context where artists give that advice is for people starting out with watercolours because they are both really bad habits that it's super easy to get into especially coming from opaque media like acrylics.
