I Found A Historic Dry Stone Wall In Australia! (Sunbury, Victoria)
In this video I was on a walk down by a local creek here in Australia and stumbled on this absolute gem of a dry stone wall.
For anyone local it’s near the Nook Sunbury.

For anyone interested in reading the sign I have copied it up below.
HISTORIC DRY STONE WALL
Goonawarra vineyard was established in 1858 (64??) by the hon. James Goodall Francis former chief secretary and premier of Victoria.
Dry stone retaining walls were built to form terraces upon which the original Goonawarra grape vines were grown.
The vineyard covered nearly 37 acres fronting to the macedon river, commonly known as Jackson’s creek and along to the nearby homestead and winery.
The ground was originally rocky spurs of the mount macedon range and the formation cost of some parts of the vineyard were as much as one hundred pounds per acre.
This section of the wall is that remains intact. If you observe each end of this section you will notice the wall continued for some distance in either direction forming what was originally a long terrace, that supported some of the grape vines.
The former vineyard was believed to have yielded 350 gallons of wine per acre.
This section of wall, as part of the original Goonawarra vineyard, is of significant historical value and has been preserved by the city of Hume.

Question about the stones. Are they all the same height? Very accurate and nice to work with if they are...

They are like bricks, easy build, we build walls with stones where some are like footballs. 🤣🤣
So do I now as I use basalt that’s about as rough as you can get, I’m extremely versatile when it comes to stone
@@DryStoneTom 🤣🤣🤣
Beautiful!
Thank you!

Looks smart...nice work mate!
Thanks mate!
That will last for centuries well done 😅
Thanks
Im amazed at the sizing of the rocks, how in blazes do you get uniformed sized rocks.
Experience and a good selection of stone
I have rebuilt my stone wall 3 times due to careless drivers ramming into it.
So not DRY stone walling! I'm sure the purists would never use cement. The effect though is undeniably 110% genuine.
Well there are massive stints that are dry and this wall wouldn’t have worked dry at all due to its location
@DryStoneTom It looks amazing, no doubt outlive our grandchildren 👍
The best stone Mason I've seen on CZcams

I also sometimes use rebar for the points
Great job!!. May l asking to you what kind of mortar are you using?. Thanks
It’s a building sand/ river sand mix mate
Which stone do you use ?

If I might be frightfully honest for a moment... That wall looks fancy AF mate! 🎉
Thanks mate!
I’m wanting to do this for a Bonsai idea I have. I need more of this 😂

If you want some more info on the wall, get onto the sunbury historic society. Real nice people, loads of history in this town
That would be awesome, are they easy to track down?
@@DryStoneTom SUNBURY FAMILY HISTORY AND HERITAGE SOCIETY INC. Type that in on the net and should be easy to track down
Hi, where did you get the slate clippings from please
Hi was just on my garden path
Hi Tom, What would you say the ideal width at the top of the wall should be for the the copers to sit on? I know you are so good you can eye ball but I would struggle to determine how wide the bottom and the top should be. Many thanks.
Depending on the size of the stone but it’s usually half as wide as the base. If you are using smaller regular stone then 700mm by 350mm or larger chunky stuff you can go 800mm by 400mm just try take an average looking at the stones you are going to use to top the wall and base it on that
@@DryStoneTom that’s brilliant. Thanks for the reply 👋🏻
واقعا عالی زنده باشید
Beautiful work! Thanks for the video
👍👍
Really helpful to a new waller like me. Learning a lot!
Clad it helped
Excellent stone work
Thank you! Cheers!
Great job 👍
Very nice looking, do you ever do smaller joints/perps/pointing than that ?
Yes but this was to match existing on the street
Beautiful
Thank you
Beautiful to see ancient skills still being practised in the modern world. Great job 👍🏻
