    Gore-Tex shake dry is done - never coming back (it uses pfas forever chemicals and Gore have discontinued it) I believe new Gore-Tex is a different technology not using the pfas membrane. Shake dry is a single layer of fabric with the Gore-Tex membrane on the outside. “Normal” jackets have DWR on the outside and the Gore-Tex membrane is on the inside - hard core mountain jackets are “triple layer” the membrane is in the middle of the sandwich…

    I immediately canceled my Zwift with the price increase ($25 cad), however I would agree that the timing maybe makes more sense because now that it's summer I would've canceled anyways, in this case maybe I did one month early, and come winter I won't be as annoyed about it. But this all being said, I doubt I will run my subscription for as long during the winter months. If there was a huge new feature unlock, maybe I could justify it more, but $25/mo is getting ridiculous, especially since every subscription is more money these days.

    Using Avon SSS (Skin So Soft), commonly found in the USA - sold by Avon reps, has been debunked as bug repellent. Reviewed articles against it's use as a bug repellent should be easily found online. I'd be especially cautious when the insects you are trying to prevent cause serious health issues e.g. Lyme disease (USA) from ticks.

    Regarding Gore Tex. I watched a documentary about it. The Problem is, they are water proof and breathable, but not at the same time. Why? Because the water blocks the pores for the steam to escape. So there will be no tech, that willmsolve that problem, because physics.

  • @sprlowe
    @sprlowe Před 52 minutami

    Goretex is a membrane that has holes in it. It is bonded to other materials when making a garment for other properties (such as durability). The "pores" in the membrane are smaller than water droplets, so keep rain out but bigger than water vapour so let sweat from the body pass through the jacket to the outside. Problem is physics. The water vapour will pass outwards through the membrane easily to a warm, dry environment but will resist venting into a damp, wet, and cold environment. So, you'll always be sweatier, damper even, inside Goretex when it's raining. But, not because rain enters. The effectiveness of the membrane would be compromised mechanically by wearing a rucksack over it, and as it ages. Always a good idea to keep Goretex clean by washing frequently to keep the pores open. Sadly, nothing is perfect, and nothing bucks physics.

    A benefit of night-time heatmaps would be for people commuting late at night, who don’t have a choice but to ride at those times (NHS, bar staff etc). I’d imagine knowing that there are likely to be other cyclists/joggers on your (probably inner city) route would be far more appealing than a quiet route where you’d be on your own - safety in numbers.

    Thanks 4 ur expertise. I have many GTX clothes from Cycling Jackets, Snowboard or Hiking Clothing - even Caps and I love techi clothes. I also got many Sympatex pieces which I prefer because of the much softer touch ( GTX 28K < STX 45K), but both needs treatment like washing after some time to close up the membrane again and refreshing the DWR. For Backcountry Snowboarding I got a HellyHansen Lifa Infinity Pro Jacket which is one of the first Jackets which doesn't needs to be treated with DWR - just a wash to keep the microfibers in order. Sympatex is hard to get your hands on, but try it. Its great and they won a Legal Case against Gore because of Gore claiming to be more ecofriendly which they are not. Cheers, looking forward to another Show listening whilst pedaling on my Indoortrainer.

    Not sure if someone else responded on your Gore Tex talk. But There are multiple options in the high end GoreTex Fabric. You probably have seen 2 layer, 3 layer and shakedry all called out as the premium Goretex. they all use the same membrane but differently. Shakedry is just the membrane coated Goretex layer. this is why it only comes in black (for the most part). 2 layer will be the Goretex bonded with a layer of regular fabric on the outside this outer layer can be any color and when the DWR wears off will get wet but that water won't cross the GoreTex layer. These will have a loose mesh liner to protect the inner side of the GoreTex. 3 layer adds an extra layer of fabric on the insde of the Goretex so now it looks like 1 piece of fabric but it is made up of 3 with a DWR on the outside layer. The backpack on a shakedry jacket is a concern because it is more easily damaged than a 2 or 3 layer jacket. That is all. As for breathability the idea is the vapor of hot sweat is going to be a smaller and able to pass from the warm side to the cold side of the membrane while the cold liquid water can not pass through the membrane. This means if you wear a bunch of insulation under the Goretex the vapor will barely be vapor anymore by the time it hits the membrane and won't be able to escape causing it to hold in the liquid while it keeps out liquid.

    Gortex - i learnt something recently that might be of use to everyone - gortex is an amazing fabric it keeps water out and allows sweat to evaporate through the pores. However, what they don't tell you is that it can't do both at the same time. If you are in a rain storm the sweat molecules can't escape through the material as the outer of the jacket is still sealed with rain droplets. It does make sense when you think about it. P.s. love the show.

Something i learned is that a “waterproof & breathable” material is better described as being waterproof OR breathable at any one time.

  • @astronomenov99
    @astronomenov99 Před 3 hodinami

    There was a lot of chat in the 80s and 90s about Gore Tex as it became popular in outdoor sports. It has it's limitations. It's pore-based and requires an environmental difference between inside of the garment and outside it. If it's wet and warm outside, that's not optimal as it's too similar to the inside. A cross country skier is most benefitted by Gore Tex. It's cold and dry outside but very warm and sweaty inside, therefore the moisture escapes well. if you wear a rucksack, that creates a warm zone as your body heats it up and the sweat will go through and can't get any further so it 'backs up' and you get a damp patch. DWR helps to make water bead up and roll off, therefore keeping the outer fabric clear of obstructions to the transmission/evaporation.

  • @ArashFallah
    @ArashFallah Před 3 hodinami

    42:43 Gore-Tex is a marketing exercise. W.L. Gore has been pushing the idea of a fabric that is Waterproof & Breathable for half a century now. Gore-Tex fabric is essentially any fabric coated with ePTFE. Since ePTFE is the expanded PTFE coating, it's 70% by weight air; thus, it has lots of pores that are smaller than water molecules and PTFE being hydrophobic with a low drag coefficient, it sheds water. In the laboratory environment, Gore-Tex fabric is indeed waterproof and it is indeed breathable when tested individually. Alas, in the real world physics only works in a certain way. You either have to have pressure difference or humidity deference to allow air molecules cross the boundary between the outside of a Gore-Tex fabric and inside of it. Therefore, Gore-Tex fabric is not breathable _and_ waterproof; it's breathable *or* waterproof. If it's rainy and humid outside, it won't breath; it would only be waterproof. And then when it's dry out, it would breath, since your body sweats. That's why they put DWR coating on the outside of Gore-Tex fabric that you need to replenish often to aid removing/shedding more surface water from the fabric to allow the differential of humidity between the inside and outside of the fabric. Hence, you can use the most breathable fabric at hand for dry times and the most water-repellent fabric for wet days. As Gore-Tex branded fabrics are never as breathable nor as waterproof as they could be. The marketing part takes place in this juncture. Everybody including Seinfeld made Gore-Tex famous and now one equates Gore-Tex with the idea of waterproof *and* breathable. However, if you want to use the Gore-Tex technology you had to only use the machinery and methods outlined by W.L. Gore because they have the patent. Once, the idea of Gore-Tex took hold of everyone's mind then you end up with a brand that essentially sells without any more effort. Funny thing is that when people found out that PTFE is a forever chemical, Gore-Tex switched from ePTFE to ePE & PU formula that other brands have been using since the discovery/invention of ePTFE to circumvent the W.L. Gore Patent for Gore-Tex. Therefore, Gore-Tex branded apparel whether cycling or otherwise focused are on principal overrated. One can find more breathable or waterproof examples of Gore branded items from the in-house part of many other brands that are substantially cheaper. Alas, that practice of enforcing a patent and taking away licencing from brands that want to also introduce their own cheaper version of waterproof/breathable has resulted in most people only identifying the Gore branded items as quality, even though the reality is quite different.

  • @mobert8266
    @mobert8266 Před 3 hodinami

    difficult what you tell about these membranes. the biggest issue in there is abouth the breathability. this is some kind of physical equilibrium. the wet air from inside sweat can get out very well, if it is dry outside and it tries to reach the equilibrium. but if it is wet outside from rain. the air is already saturated with water. so the more wet it gets, the less breeathable it also gets. also it is possible to rub of the membrane on the inside. it depens on how robust the layers are. they are split into 2, 2.5 and 3 layer technology. you will find more about this especially with outdoor brands and hiking stuff.
