I've only been a mechanic for a few years, but doing the Shimano "Inspection" made me feel like a chimpanzee assembling a jet plane. It is far beyond anything a normal shop mech would do. Utter stupidity. People are going to get hurt.

Although this does explain what's been going on at Boeing recently...

    • @joelecho
      @joelecho Před 4 měsíci +5

It's possible that you're the best bike mechanic on earth, and you're still not going to know if a crank that passes their inspection is just a day or two away from corrosion getting bad enough that it begins to fail. All you can really determine is if it's failed already.
In my opinion (I feel like such a dork saying "my professional background is engineering" in a youtube comment, but I feel like in this case it's valid, lol) a good portion of the cranks made this way will eventually fail, and it's just a matter of time, exposure to challenging conditions, and whether or not they are replaced with new ones before that point is reached. The design is inherently vulnerable to it, and the new design seems to be aiming to reduce moisture ingress (to reduce corrosion) rather than addressing the core vulnerability of the way the two pieces are bonded together. I'm not certain with the latest generation of cranks but in the 7000/8000/9000 era, 105 cranks were bonded together differently and are much more robust, so if I'm going to use Shimano cranks these days, it's 105, even on an otherwise higher end groupset.
Anyway, all that to say, I think you're bang on with your conclusion. People are going to get hurt. I'm not sure to what degree you could validate these even with non destructive testing using very extensive engineering tools, never mind with the tools available to a bike shop. There are tonnes of amazing bike mechanics, but even Nino Schurters mechanic isn't going to be able to tell you that your crank wont fail in the next month. Only if it's already started failing, and by that point from a safety perspective, it could go from just-in-time to too late very very quickly.
I understand how prohibitively expensive it would be to replace all of these cranks, but like you said, people are going to get hurt, and the longer these cranks are on bikes the more that will happen. And I think a lot of people, including myself, are perfectly happy on their really nice 11 speed mechanical setups, and want to ride those for a long long time, which may mean more of the older ones start to fail. At some point that, too could get really ugly for Shimano.
If this were happening to a crucial part in a car, there would be a full recall and that's that. It's concerning that so far the strategy for a critical bike part is "we'll replace yours but only if it breaks". What if it breaks when you accelerate out of a corner in your biggest gear on a mountain decent? Yikes.

I also ride a motorcycle, which means I take a lot more care, and pay a lot more attention further up the road than a standard car only driver would do. As the same with Bicycles if you come a cropper against a solid object it will end very badly for you. So I feel that all car drivers should be forced to spend X amount of time on a bicycle or scooter/motorcycle to learn their road craft and compassion before they jump in a sealed cocoon. Obviously there would have to be some exceptions due to disability, for example but I feel it would benefit everyone.

    They are called Dunlop Valve.
They are only rated for up to 6 bar and you can't check the pressure on them. You can only read the pressure while you're pumping up the tire and the reading will be a little higher than the actual pressure.

Some people (non cyclists) find it hard to see the bigger picture. A motorist who is willing to put a cyclist in danger, knowing just how vulnerable they are to a motor vehicle, won't think twice about doing dangerous sh!t around other motorists or in situations where the risk is not so obvious. These are the drivers who speed ALL the time, tailgate, block junctions, race the lights, overtake on blind bends/hills, and drive through the 20mph zone past our kids schools at 50+.

This is why Shimano have had to use a built in battery and not a swapable one.
Most of the barriers to component development now are patent related.
This is why SRAM still can not make a reliable front derailleur, why their chains have no chamfers and why it took until Shimano's patent to run out to use hyperglide style ramps.

It surprised me that I have encountered much more violence from car drivers as a cyclist over the years than Mikey has. I had one gentleman overtake me, then park on an intersection and get out of his car to fight me. I had one who accelerated into me and my bike while I was facing him on the road. Another one chased me through the traffic and tried to drive over me or hit me from the side.
That's the most violent examples that I can think of. The two latter cases I reported to the police but they didn't take action.
The driver in the last example sued me for damaging his car and harassing him with my apparently presence on the road and his case came to court. The first judge found me guilty and I needed to escalate it to the next court to get most convictions reversed. That all happened in Germany.

I tend to air on the conservative side when inspecting the Cranksets and if there is any doubt it will fail the inspection and be returned for a warranty replacement. I am sure I am not the only Bike Shop taking this approach.

RE Shimano cranks. My Ultegra crank looked fine but started clicking. I have a spare tiagra crank that I swapped it with including the 1x chain ring I use and pedals. So the entire drivetrain is the same except crank arms ... no clicking. Took it for inspection at my local bike shop, told them about the clicking and was surprised they passed it and when i questioned them they became quite combative. Looking at the crank afterwards it was as dirty as when I gave it to them. Given that a thorough clean is part of the inspection I can only assume it wasn't actually inspected properly according to the protocol.
Not happy, I spoke to Madison and they told me that the clicking should have triggered a return to Shimano and to get it inspected at a shop further away that they recommended. I did and they failed it.
The assumption is that all bike shops are scrupulous and honest which is why we hear about shops sending all cranks back but of course less than honest shops also exist. Why would a shop not properly inspect a crank but still pass it? I'm speculating here but my understanding is they get paid the same pass or fail, but a fail involves a whole lot of work whereas a pass involves filling out a form and claiming the inspection fee whether the work was carried out or not. For a lazy and dishonest shop owner taking a cursory look and passing it is easy money compared to doing the job properly.

I've had enough of it and it's scary being at the mercy of idiots in control of lethal weapons, so I'll be getting a bike camera for commutes soon

  • @daredemontriple6

End of the day, use of the road by anything other than your own 2 feet is a privilege not a right. The more dangerous your mode of transport the more of a privilege it is. I think many car drivers are upset by the fact that the world is trying to build them out of it - and with good reason. For far too long we have relinquished huge amounts of space purely so those with cars can drive them around, and now in the modern era we're realising that we should really be prioritising people, not their private transport. Cars are an exceptional tool for getting where you want, but every tool has it's use case. You wouldn't use a saw to bang a nail into a fence, and you shouldn't really use a car for driving around town.
End of the day, the people who react badly to this are the people who commit these offences themselves. After all, if they didn't run red lights, text while driving, and drive down the on-coming lane to skip traffic, what have they got to fear? It's one thing breaking laws that are purely an issue of convenience - for example, illegally streaming content because you don't want to pay extortionate subscription fees - but it's another thing to put other's lives in danger when doing so.
It's similar to drink drivers. Plenty of videos from UK local police forces on youtube of them arresting drunk drivers and they all say the same thing. "I wouldn't hurt anyone" or "I'm not a bad person", all the while they are oblivious to the ambulance crew just meters away desperately trying to resuscitate the mother and child that they very much did hurt. Most, if not all, of these drivers seem to think that it's fine to be on their phone because they're stationary in traffic, or that they wouldn't hit someone while speeding, etc. They all seem to fail to grasp the concept of lethality. The average car is capable of killing a person at 5mph. That's a simple fact. All it takes is to ease your way forwards, still texting, and rear-end the traffic in-front of you, and in doing so crush the pedestrian who had decided to cross the road while the traffic was at a standstill.
Imagine if those cars were loaded guns. Would these people flagrantly point their gun around and then complain when someone reported them to the police for putting everyone else in danger? The responsibility of driving is being aware of your surroundings - you have at your power the ability to kill and maim with little to no effort, it is your duty to ensure (as much as is possible) that those things do not happen.

The lever throw, clickiness and general feel of the shifting mechanism in a mechanical groupset is unparalleled imo. electronic shifting works awesome but feels kind of generic and not that exciting...

Also Mikey's point about British driving standards is spot on -- as hard as it may be to imagine when you have a car buzz you at 18 inches on a country lane, they really are far higher than most other countries. Trust me, I live in America, where we've gone in 50 years from having a lower accident rate than the UK to having around three times the UK's accident rate, mainly due to faster, more reckless and more distracted driving.

In regard to having to bring your bike to a shop for inspection even though you work on your own bike. Removing and installing a shimano road crank takes MINUTES- you can do that yourself and inspect the crank for cracks, then bring the crank to a dealer if you see a crack. Easy Peazy.

At 56:16, so good to hear London police taking road safety seriously. I've been in a meeting with management from Chicago police where an administrator quite openly admit to speeding herself and regarded speeding on Lake Shore Drive as a victimless crime. Aside from the exposure of the bike trail to reckless driving, and the injury- or fatal-causing accidents, and the boost to motor vehicle insurance costs for Chicago, I see all the damage to infrastructure, coming out of my property taxes. Victimless my foot.

I used a hire cycle in London from Clapham to Battersea yesterday, as I have done many times. But decided to keep a tally. 11 cyclists blatantly jumped lights, 16 others including me (of course) didn't. 1 ran through an occupied pedestrian crossing dodging people. Of those 11, 5 were on hire cycles, 2 were food delivery, 4 were drop bar, I think id guess 1 was a document courier. Conversely, 2 speeding motorbikes, 4 cars in ASL boxes, 6 jumped lights, 2 failed to stop at a crossing with people waiting. 3 close passes. Been watching Mikey on Twitter for a long time, and he's right, there are bad drivers and cyclists and there are good ones. The divisive "us v's them" is nonsense, as we know around 85% of cyclists drive, and thousands of kids cycle to school. If I see another comment that "you don't pay road tax" I will have an embolism.

    • @_MrSnrub

It is classic whataboutism. Once a cyclist does something wrong, everyone is up in arms. Nobody bats an eye when motorists speed, run reds, make illegal turn on red/illegal u-turns, follow too closely, drive at a speed inappropriate for weather conditions, drive distracted, and the list goes on and on. Motorists are absolutely the worst. I would know, I was a shithead before I matured and realized how stupid I was being.
Sure, there are definitely cyclists that break laws or do something dangerously; I won't argue that some do. But a majority of the time they do this, they aren't actually risking anyone's safety but their own. I've seen the videos of cyclists blatantly running red lights, and its definitely not a good idea, especially in busy intersections; however, there are instances where it is actually legal to do so and I've been yelled at when I am 100% within the law and do run through a red light on my bike.
Before anyone starts telling me its illegal no matter what, you are wrong. Where I am, if a cyclist is at a light for 2 minutes and the light does not change, so long as the path is clear from oncoming traffic, it is fully legal to then go through the red light.

The Shimano crank issue should be solved by paying back each affected customer. With that each customer would accept responsibility for what they do with the cranks, if that's legally possible. Then everybody can decide if they want to use the money to replace the cranks or just keep it. Replacing all of them is a lot of waste, depending on the actual failure rates.

It's legal to operate the automobile's computers but not the mobile personal computer whilst driving. I don't think one distraction is less harmful than the other. The laws should be changed and allow handy phone usage whilst driving. Just don't be an idiot. It's already illegal to drive like the honorable veteran in the video who looked to the back side whilst driving for several seconds.

I wonder if you can detect the crank cracks by tapping on them. With china (okay possibly not an ideal facsimile) you can hear a crack that isn’t visible. It makes a flatter sound rather than the usual ring. The same I seem to recall is true of train wheels where long, long ago, they used to check the ‘ring’ of the wheels. Might be interesting.

What the Shimano approach is ignoring (conveniently for Shimano) is most cyclists never have their bicycles regularly serviced. We can hope this is different for Ultegra and Dura Ace owners (those affected by this), but I don't think this is a given. By recommending annual inspections, Shimano are tacitly acknowledging that the issue can arise as a result of moisture, stress and corrosion at any time in the life cycle, and having passed an inspection at a single point does not guarantee the crankset against future occurrences.
