Economic slavery won out because it was in businesses best interest, and it was sold as "more freedom". You're free to not work, and free to get a job somewhere else, or a job you like. The fiction is there are no jobs elsewhere or doing what you like, and if you don't work you starve.

Watching videos like this reminds me how much i miss things from them in Warhammer 3. Agent Videos from Shogun 2, Full scale city sieges, Naval battles... and everything was more complex. Heck, everything older than Rome 2, the AI was actually competent. not the braindead AI we have in Warhammer 3.
