Handgun Safe
United States
Registrace 23. 07. 2019
I started Handgun Safe as a resource for gun owners in 2015, after I wrote an investigative piece for American Shooting Journal. The piece, titled “Gun Safe Cracking," looked at the unregulated industry of Chinese-made gun safes. Initially, Vimeo was my chosen platform for sharing video, and the name of my channel was Handgun Safe Research. In 2019 I switched to CZcams. The name of my website remains Handgun Safe Research. -Dave Goetzinger
The EVESKY Drop-Down Handgun Safe
This is the most dangerous drop-down handgun safe I've seen. Breaking into this gives you two guns for the price of one.

Old thread I know but how thick is the steel for this compared to the for Knox? It seems like more features at a lower price point I'm just curious if there's any drawbacks
The two boxes are nearly identical and have the same amount of steel. Just get the one you want. 😀
Great video. I wonder if it passes the test using hammer to hit the push buttons? Would it be able to open?
The housing welded into this will prevent the punch attack. That's why I recommend it. I didn't bother trying to destroy it, because there is no reason to.
This one is definitely more expensive than then key entry one. However, I am going for this one as it is on your approval list and when I have to open it at night, I don’t want to get the key in the dark while every second counts.
Handgun Safe do you like this key version over the push button version? Thank you.
I don't know. The decision to buy one or the other comes down to intended use.
Have you ever pulled apart a simplex lock? I'd like to see how it works on the inside..
Yes, I've taken these locks apart. The lock is elegant in its design. But when I go to the trouble of recording a detailed video on a technical matter, the video receives only modest views. A video covering how the 5-button Simplex lock works would be a lot of work for very few views. In fact, in case you want to know, the average watch time for my videos is 1 minute, 30 seconds, no matter the topic.
@@HandgunSafe lol.. bummer. I'm just fascinated in how they work.. I've never heard of them until recently. I've been getting free safe's that were open.. and I learned how to decode the combination locks.. But the simplex is it's own little world. :) ... I love learning about cool stuff like this, that I never even knew was out there.................... Well, If you ever did make a video with a complete teardown of a simplex: I would be grateful and super excited.. Cheers. (I subbed too, btw).. I liked your math video on counting the possible combinations. very cool
Great videos, keep it up!
What is the cheapest lockbox/safe you recommend? It would only need to be able to stop a curious teenager for my use case.
My recommendations are in my recommendations list. I don't rank them by cost or features, but none of them are cheap.
@@HandgunSafe I see, thanks 👍
I could use one like this if it wasn't a such a woeful failure.
I bought a sturdy simplex-based safe based on your suggestions. I appreciate you putting this information out, and have encouraged friends to watch your videos. Thanks!
Basically, do NOT put guns in it. Use it as a decoy.
Maybe install it at the end of a counter, then put a bag of almonds or walnuts inside, and make a set of food-safe jaws (folded pie-plate) that hooks onto that 'ledge' to minimize contamination. Were that ledge a little larger I'd say can crusher, or gravel pulverizer but the original mounting plate is really not substantial enough for that.
@@LynxSnowCat Or put sugar in there so little kids can't get it.
Awesome channel. Great video! I like how firm you seem to be about your opinions.
do you have instagram platform ?
Nope, just a CZcams channel and a website, which is mostly for people in the industry.
It’s amazing how something that “looks” sturdy and safe can be such a piece of crap.
Love your videos. I would love if you took a look at the Vara Safety Reach 2s.
To be honest, I have no interest in the Vera Safety thing. And unless I could talk them into sending one for free, I would rather not spend $270 or whatever they want for it. Sorry.
vaultz makes pencil boxes and equivalent "lock boxes" aimed at children and maybe high school kids, I can't believe they'd have the balls to put out a handgun safe built exactly the same way as their other products.
This comment got held up by CZcams. Maybe it was "have the balls" that triggered the hold up. Anyway, I let it through, and I agree. I can't believe Vaultz would make a handgun safe like a pencil box, or maybe a guitar case.
Wow, what a piece of junk. A handgun safe should not be less secure and less well-built than a cheap briefcase.
Yo, this pos is 50 bucks! 🤙🏽
When I got it, this was 39.99. So I guess people are buying it and using it for guns.
It's a kids toy, being marketed for handguns.
Good for storing documentals of little or no importance, but that's IT.
Ya know, there are ratings that are posted when you see a movie. I just don't think watching an R rated movie would kill someone if watched accidentally but something that is as important as locking up a firearm is left up to viewers discretion. This handgun "safe" screams that it is a Chinese POS. It should be rated XXX for impersonating a safety device. I really think a mandatory rating system, by qualified individuals, should be imposed on all safes sold in America.
The way you wrote this triggered the comments blocker, which is good I guess. I want to filter out the bad stuff, but this was funny.
Is this a combo lock?
Yes, it is a pushbutton combination lock.
I would love to see how this lock handles a drill test. I doubt all of these cam type locks. It seems like it could be drilled out with a large drill bit like 3/8-1/2” in <10 minutes
Most locks can be drilled. I've been force-testing locks for years. What's the point?
Self-note: watch this once I'm no longer weary of CZcams
Try getting away from the ugliness by listening to cool music you never heard before. I've been discovering music on CZcams. Here is some music I somehow missed: Unleash The Archers, Sigrid, and the new album by Kvelertak.
@@HandgunSafe Major respect to anybody who listens to UtA. I recommend Symphony X and Sonata Arctica's "White Pearl, Black Oceans" (not Part II). Also, Lords of Trident.

amazing, I love the bit of info on China. I did not know that!
The situation is even worse than I let on. I should probably do an in-depth video on this issue.
@@HandgunSafe Although it's not directly related to a GunSafe video channel, I would still really be interested in your take. Overall, I try to buy non-CCP products, but it's tough because it seems to be the only type of hardware that's sold.
@@BlueSpawn I hear you. China manufactures most of the fasteners, nuts-and-bolts, wiring, electrical components, and so on. I think this is going to change over time. You can still buy tools made in the U.S. And you can buy Knipex hand tools.
Hi there! How do you set up the panels inside the safe? I can't seem to do it with mine, and I already tried attaching the supplied metal pieces to the panels to no avail
I can't help you with it. I no longer own that particular safe. I gave it away and replaced it with another.
Do you recommend MAKE locks? I'm skeptical of Chinese quality. I have no experience in changing locks.
MAKE locks are good for inexpensive imported locks. If you want an even better lock, you can swap out the lock on a Steelhead box. I don't help people with swapping locks. You can learn about that on other CZcams channels. You'll need some tools and a bit of mechanical aptitude.
Great - helped me a lot with a Stack On!
Thank you sir. Just bought my first firearm
I tried to comment with a couple of youtube links and it got nixed/hidden. Usually youtube links don't trigger that. linkless version: you previously reviewed a Wincent bio/combo safe that failed because you could break off the access panel and jumper pins to pop the safe open. Active Self Protection advocated for a newer(?) Wincent product that seems to possibly lack that vulnerability and I was hoping you could review it. I'd be happy to link to it on his X post and youtube vid if you chose to. He has a wude enough audience and likes that product in context he explains, so I'm happy to provide warning or endorsement either way.
Do you have a recommendation on the best brand besides this brand for a lockbox stored in a vehicle? I have a CCW but there are times were it is not legal for me to carry inside a building. I am a big fan and think that these videos are very educational. All of the research I’ve done has been leading me back to cheap boxes or Amazon (which seem like really poor products).
The recommendations I make are all on my recommendations playlist. See: czcams.com/play/PLJp0a5mt3TiTPJpZeA2jKPgYdjHIEvw9k.html
Thanks so much, you’re awesome!!
I just took mine out of the box and it will not open via following the instructions. Pretty ridiculous
Contact Viking Safe through their website. Every one of those locks come from the factory with the same preset combination, 2&4 together, then 3. Maybe somebody at the second factory, where the locks are installed in the boxes, something went wrong.
@@HandgunSafe yeah really not sure what happened. I sent an email, we’ll see if the get back but I’m leaving overseas tomorrow morning so hopefully they do by today 😂
Trivia: Did you know Ballistol also sells alcohol beverage in Germany? It's shaped like the small 50ml glass bottle they use for the oil too.
Interesting trivia. I'm switching over to Rand CLP.
Nice job. My e-lock is failing and I’m thinking this Big Red lock looks nice but are they out of business already? Where did you get this lock?
Did you ever do a GunBox video? Also, will you be doing a Wyze review as well?
No, I never did a GunBox video. I doubt that I will. They just aren't that popular anymore. As for a Wyze review, I don't know. I'll think about it.

2:25 _"The damage is done."_ - Dave
I like how CZcams is capable of suggesting some videos in which you said these lines when I searched "the damage is done" on your channel. I think it's capable of searching (to some degree) within the automated captions of the videos for keywords. If I search "you could just give it a good shake", I instantly find the Union Safe with too many ways to break in.
@@replacesoundboard I did not know this! I'll play around with searching...
Before watching the video, the biometric and the hidden bypass lock reminded me of the Verifi Smart Safe, before they listened to your feedback.
Well, at least the Verifi Smart Safe looked like it was worth its price
This box is nearly identical to the Smart Safes. The basic box fabrication has been around for years and years.
() I keep forgetting how stupid these things are programmed to be. Instead of greeting them with the same cheerful tune - Just changing the response to a farting noise when there's no print registered would immediately inform the user that the safe is compromised - without increasing parts count. Making it hesitate/require confirmation to 'lock' without a registered print (illuminating the scanner until button pressed again) would inform the user that it wants a print - without increasing parts count. Making it refuse to lock (quickly) without using a registered fingerprint would force the user to return it to a more 'secure' condition - without increasing parts count.
If that button is moved to a different place, I wonder if this safe will get your approval?
No. The bypass lock installed in this is a short-cylinder cross lock. I've demonstrated how to open them on this channel using tools any non-expert lock picker can use. Besides, the reason that some biometric handgun safes were recalled recently was this identical programming issue. If someone makes a mistake enrolling a fingerprint, that person has no way of knowing the safe will still open for any fingerprint without actively testing the safe. The risk of somebody leaving a safe available to anyone is too great, so devices that have this programming oversight are being recalled.
Always good to hear from you.
Let me know if you would like to see more from my archives! I have tons of unposted video.
Yes, please! Especially of decent safes.
@@vsevolodtokarev I don't have any of those. If I know of a decent safe, I will recommend it here. What I have are videos of security failures, lots of dangerous gadgets.
Archived videos are always nice.
Is a simplex lock box that small really worth $300?
Have you tested the Vaultek Slider series? I've seen the vulnerabilities in their top opening products, but would be interested in seeing their newer line of sliders tested.
No, I haven't. I don't have much interest in those.
Outstanding video review 👍👍
Great job. Thank you
The key version or the simplex lock? What’s the better choice?
It's up to you. I like the Simplex lock version. Fewer keys means fewer keys.
I'm going to offer some more not-asked-for advice. Because I like your content way more than the lawyer everyone talks about. I went there to get the model of this safe and couldn't find it. A natural description about the video and what's in it will also help CZcams know who to plop your videos in front of. 🍻
Okay. In a few days, I'll put proper descriptions under certain videos that actually get watched. In the past, I found that very few people read descriptions. They also can't find playlists. Since I spent more time posting links to my playlists than anything else, it was easier to put the link in the description.
@HandgunSafe @HandgunSafe Yeah, you shouldn't care one whit about PEOPLE reading them. It's what the CZcams robots use as meta-data to figure out what you're making and who to plop it in front of. And yes, I've also found that, after creating supremely interesting and well crafted playlists, no one gives a 💩 . I think playlists only work for music channels... 🍻
Thanks Dave, I use this to train my online staff for price match vetting for my company's website. Only point you need to update is the 18/21 warning which is almost required now
If I update this video, my audience won't watch it. This video is among the worst performing videos I've posted. I could update it, but then that would require taking this one down so I don't have all those emails from people expressing confusion. I've tried that kind of thing before. And again, no one will watch it. So I don't know it it's worth redoing a script, re-recording it, assembling updated shots from websites, etc.
Do you have a list of gun safes that you would recommend that can fit under a car seat
Check out my Playlist of recommendations. The handgun safes I recommend are on that list.
