Great content, thanks

I agree on the long sterilization time for agar and lc, I pc mine two hours. Never hurt it and it's always clean. I sterilize grain for 2.5 sometimes 3 hours depending on the weight of the bags. I don't think you can hurt it as long as you haven't over boiled it prior. I have sealed bags of grain that are 3 months old and gourmet mushrooms show no difference in colonization from fresh bags. I remember when I first started growing oyster mushrooms, I was fooled into thinking 90 min on grain and 45 on media. Had a ton of problems until I started pc ing longer.
Same here. I wasted literally hundreds (possibly thousands) of pounds of agar and grain due to some people parroting the same crap they heard from others who didn't know what they were talking about. I'm starting to think they wanted us to fail. Job security for plate pourers and people selling pre-sterilized grain! Maybe I'm just paranoid...LOL
@@edwardgrand ha ha maybe we are both paranoid. Lol but paranoia caused us to figure out the truth. And what you said is the truth

I get sleepy when I take mushrooms and have found after a few years of tired sleepy trips that just making sure you are REALLY well rested makes a huge difference. Even when I think I have had a good night sleep I'll get tired. So now I make sure I have at least a few really good night sleeps with more than 8 hours slept in the night.
Thank you!!

Do you just take the lids off when you start fruiting?
yes. If I don't have room on my incubation area, I just leave them on for about 5 days in the tent.
@@edwardgrand How often do you have to mist or water during fruiting with the lids completely off?
@@MrWheatable I don't mist. Look for my tent videos.

Thank you for the nice message and letting me know about the mic. I still want to buy a new toy to play with though :) Seems like I'll be doing this for a while. Thank you for watching.
Given the choice, I can't decide what "form" do I want odpe in? A plate, lc, or a swab? Given your experience, what would you start with? I'm thinking plate since it's not a cross.

I don't think NPK fertilizers will do much.
I don't know if StreamYard has the feature. But you should do call in questions like the radio.
The size of the box is irrelevant to your yield. The calculation should be based off of the total amount of substrate and grain. Once the mycelium runs out of food, it fruits. Once it runs out of moisture, it dies.
Thank you for the very simple explanation. Unfortunately, it's a bit too simple. The total amount of substrate and the ratio are very important depending on the size of the box and/or container. Ask anyone who has used quart jars, 2-liter bottles, PP5 bags, monotubs, shoeboxes, etc. They will tell you how every new growing system needs to be tweaked for a particular cultigen, spawn/sub ratios, FAE, ambient conditions, filter patch type, etc.
I started my first spawn bag a week ago and the mycelium is already 15%+ looking beautiful... now i cant stop watching mycology videos 😂 Ive even bought 2 more grain bags, a boomer shroomer tub and her substrate...and a still air box 😭😂 I think i have a new hobby atleast for a little while
Story of my life 😂😂
Try using less spawn and more sub. Seems to be working for me.
@edwardgrand OK, I'll give it a try. What's the thinking there? More water provided by the sub so fruits don't abort as they grow and suck up water?
@@BigMush9000 I think I figured it out. Pretty much what you said. More substrate, less spawn = less pins and less aborts. Essentially the spawn makes too many pins, then there is not enough water, and they die :(
@edwardgrand makes a lot of sense! How does contam factor into that? More spawn equals faster colonisation....out competing everything else. That's my understanding at least. Does less spawn drastically slow colonisation? I think it's time for me to run some experiments! Really appreciate the knowledge you share so freely, Ed!
@@BigMush9000 I wouldn't use contaminated spawn. Contam will always win. Figure out why the spawn is contaminated. ;)
Maybe a silly question. Using puppy pads instead of diapers and its great! Has anyone tried a puppy or incontinence pad as a monotub liner? Maybe too wet? Might try it. Would appreciate your thoughts.
I use what are called 'incontinence pads'. I think they are all the same idea, just different sizes and prices.
Great episode as always. I can surely relate to not freezing plates. LMFAO i used to store plates in a wine fridge at 60 degrees until one day it malfunctioned and the temp dropped down to 38 on my thermometer. It caused all the water to be pushed out of my plates making hindred of little mycelium swimming pools. Caused me a ton of problems, sub culturing literally everything onto new plates, some taking multiple transfers to get clean again. Some i lost completely and had to go back to my long term storage.......... Now i use the fridge as just an insulated box to buffer temperature, cut the cord off so im never tempted to try that again.😂😂😂 Mycology humbes me often
I think but do not know for sure, but the way you store plates upside down in regular room temps to eliminate condensation, when storing at 60/65 they do ok. But when they are upside down and get very cold all the water ends up in the lid when the media shrinks and pushes it out. I think if the were upright when they got cold they would have been ok. Now I no longer store anything in any kind of mechanical appliance
@@Primitivemycology Living in Thailand, I have learned to completely distrust all electronics. Digital timers, fridges, LED lights settings, humidifiers, dryers...all fucking disasters if the power is out. I like the 'primitive' way of the incontinence pads and water storage. I have subcultured plates after 9 months at room temperature, no problems.
@@edwardgrand I love that, I started using long term water storage after watching one of your videos. Works great, I still use slants too but less and less. Hell I'm so against electrical input that I grow outside in summer and inside in winter, that's my climate control. 😂😂 I use a humidifier inside in the tent and the fan but I think I will start using the incontinence pads this winter. I wish there was a way to cut out a fan to but oysters and pioppino just won't grow without the FAE.
Love this content mate! I replay all your live streams when doing cardio and mycology work.
Thank you for the message. I'm glad you're getting some info and a bit of entertainment. I enjoy this type of thing when I'm working too. I listen to other's streams repeatedly while I'm working. Always pick up something new. Kind of like listening to the radio back in the day. :)

When to clone and when to take spores in terms of stabilizing. Does one keep taking spores making new gens everygrow , or does one take clones & spores . Curious how you approach those processes and what’s best to do furthering a culture
Clones are genetic replicates. That is technically already 'stable'. Stability in the genetic sense usually means selecting the same phenotype from multispore grows over and over again. This is an incredibly complex process that I can't explain here. Please contact me through my social media (in description) if you have more questions.
@@edwardgrand certainly , look out for me 🫡. Extremely interested -JunaYogi
How many mL of water can one use for serial dilution regardless of bottle/tube size. Can it be whatever ? As the main goal is to dilute and isolate ? Appreciate you
I find using a total volume of 10 mL for each dilution convenient. Start off with 10 mL, add/dilute/shake, then use 1 mL of that to the next container with 9 mL of new water. Do that 3 times and then you will have your 1X, 10X, 100X, 1000X. I plate out 1 mL of each of those. Then you get a wide range of germination rates to choose from.
@@edwardgrand I’m going to assume this can be done with centrifuge tubes as well? That’s what I have. Very thorough response. Nuff Respect my brother 🙏.
This is great, I’m going to use this. I will scale it up slightly to fit the containers I want to use. I like how it is so simple, it allows you to concentrate on other important ares, like getting clean spawn. Invaluable when a beginner like me! Thanks Ed.
It is nice for doing a lot of experiments. If something goes wrong, it's a lot easier to compartmentalize and clean-up too :)

Seriously love all the knowledge you give to us for free to combat disinformation. I wanted to ask about pe blobs and when I should harvest. First time having blobs. Watched the video you posted but you never mentioned when it is time to harvest blobs
I have only gotten PE blobs a couple times. I would harvest them when they have stopped getting bigger, but while they are still firm and no smell. The actual time is highly variable.
