    GRYA recipe
    2% Glutinous Rice/Tapioca/Arrow root/Whole wheat flour
    2% Agar
    0.1% Baker's or Nutritional Yeast
    Food Coloring (if desired)
    FOR 500 ml Total volume
    10 g Glutinous Rice/Whole wheat flour
    10 g Agar
    0.5 g Baker's Yeast
    Food Coloring or 1g charcoal if desired.
    500 ml tap water
    -Should make between 20-25 standard size plates.
    Rice Water Agar
    Boil rice, noodles or pasta with excess water (at least 1.5 liter).
    Use about 100g of rice/pasta and 1.5 liter of tap water.
    After boiling the rice for about 30 minutes, use a strainer and bowl to collect the excess water. SAVE THIS WATER! Let it cool. Discard the rice or cook it more for consumption.
    For 500 ml of cooled rice water, measure out 10g of agar, 0.5g of Baker’s yeast, and add it to the cooled water. Do not add agar to hot liquid. It will clump-up and be very difficult to dissolve. If you are in a hurry, dissolve the agar/yeast in cool water, then add it to the hot water to make the total volume 500 ml.
    If the rice water is too ‘rich’, you may need to dilute it with clean tap water. Agar media that is too rich will lead to tomentose mycelium that is difficult to differentiate from contamination. Lower nutrient levels tend to grow mycelium that is more rhizomorphic and indicative of dikaryotic P. cubensis mycelium.
    Swirl this until the agar is mostly dissolved.
    Pressure cook as normal.
    Pour 20-25 standard 90 mm plates.

    I haven't tried this type yet but I will soon!
    My Autistic son and I were watching this and he asked me what does KISS stand for?
    I told him it stands for (Keep It Simple Stupid).. but I'll switch the end to (Silly) for him.
    So 15 minutes later I hear him down in the kitchen, I go down and ask him what he's doing?
    He goes making a sandwich KISAH style. I'm like KISAH 🤔?
    I go you mean KISS style, he said no, this is my version (Keep It Simple AssHole). 😳....
    I'm like, you calling me an asshole? he goes that depends if you're keeping it simple or not 😂🤣
    Thank you for another great video Ed! You bring a lot of knowledge and fun to my house 🖤

    I've tried it all and the best and the easiest recipe has definitely been:
    For 500ml:
    10g Agar
    6.5g (Extra) Light Malt Extract
    1g Nutritional Yeast

    When I used potato flakes most of my mycelium was Tomentose (I don’t know how to spell it!) lol when I switched to the brown rice flower I got all sorts of rizomorphic growth! Is it the recipe that helps it be rizomorphic?

    • @edwardgrand
      @edwardgrand Před 4 měsíci +4

      Yes. The recipe dramatically affects growth style. It is irrelevant to the final fruit product as long as it's a clean culture.

    • @edwardgrand
      @edwardgrand Před 4 měsíci +2

      I would, but the malt extract tends to get clumpy.
      I also change my recipe constantly, so a pre-mix would be kind of pointless. Changing the media often is a good way to keep the fungi on it's toes and stave off senescence.

    • @MacCelium
      @MacCelium Před 4 měsíci

      @@edwardgrand Thanks and funny you say that. Ironically, the reason I wanted to create some mixes, was to have a range of quick recipe options. Also, thanks a ton for your commentary below on overly rich media. What you described is exactly what I'm dealing with (I think). I'm getting some intense tomentose colonies, and at the same time, and from the same (more or less) genetics, some great looking rhizomorphic plates. I'm not obsessed with rhizo, but it does give me more confidence concerning contamination. Since I've been staring at some of these plates daily and scratching my head, I really appreciate the heads up.

      Cost and final appearance. If you use Baker's yeast, there will be small chunks in media. I haven't noticed any difference in growth.

    Ed - my Telephone Agar is fungicidal!
    Got a new shipment Sep23 of the 25g packets and began using those in Dec. Nothing would grow for 2 months as I experimented to track the problem.
    Agar from a different mfr solved the problem. I have side-by-side plates where the only difference is the TP vs New agar. The myc won't grow onto the TP agar. I'm trying to revive the old transfers now and starting to see life; was worried all were dead after that long on anti-fungal agar.
    I starting using a capped media bottle in PC and let the boil mix the ingredients about the same time. Maybe that traps deadly volatiles that could otherwise escape in a simmering pan? Or else TP changed something in the packets. I haven't experimented to answer this yet. The TP also would not set hard. Increased to 12g in 500ml and still would not set harder than toothpaste.

    • @edwardgrand
      @edwardgrand Před 4 měsíci +1

      Sorry, that doesn't make any sense. Maybe one of your containers has residual chemicals in it? Real Telephone brand is distributed worldwide and commonly used for culinary purpose. I doubt it is the brand's fault. 12g for 500 ml not setting. Very weird. You are doing something wrong. Don't blame it on the agar.

    • @HanshazeShonen
      @HanshazeShonen Před 3 měsíci

      I'd rather not blame the agar but that is where I'm at, until I have the time to run a side-by-side 1 factor experiment.
      The only things that touch or go near my agar are:
      Glass petri dishes (new to me but others from same batch have grew ok in the past)
      Glass Media Bottles (was bought new about the same time as the problem started, but worked fine with new agar)
      Stir bar
      Telephone Agar (was a new batch when problems started)
      Light malt extract (same old batch for 2 years now)
      Flowbench
      Grafting tape wrap (new, works with new agar)
      77F incubator (used before with success)
      All of the above were used for TP agar batches that failed.
      Then same again for 1 FitLane agar batch that is growing.
      But the final word would be to mix up batches of the agars at the same time, and through the same PC run, and pour every-other petri at the same time, then do side-by-side clone samples or agar transfers.
      Besides 12g not setting hard the other oddity was 0% contamination of any TP plate during these months.
      Is there a better format to communicate with you, one of the discords, or other ? Don't want to talk your ear off.
