Hello everyone! Good day to you!
This sprightly channel delves into the intricacies of jazz and fusion Improvisation along with 20c classical music theory and compositional techniques. Although, it all might sound a bit serious, it's really just about looking at how music works, taking it apart and then applying it, and..hopefully, having a bit of fun along the way!
My 1st study is classical piano, although, through some strange encounter I ended up moving over to guitar....

Brilliant Clifford, just mere brilliance!
Thanks mate!👍
very henry cow (fred frith) type lines. awesome
Thanks Growskull, Yeah, Fred Frith's a legend!👍
great insights thanks
Thanks! Messiaen's modes are great for coming up with new ideas, especially making chords and interesting lines out of them.👍
Great line cliff 👌
Thanks Phil!
Awesome as always ❤🎉🎉
Thanks Richard!👍

Hey the Vandenberg is back nice guitar that cliff 👍
Sounds super useful, will try and hunt down a copy!
Hi Cliff Listening here dear...nice topic & great review of the book ...interesting
Thanks Juliana, Appreciated!👍
Dammit, I would have discussed this with John McLaughlin when I met him, only I wouldn't have understood a single word of his answer.
Lol! Yeah, John would really relate to this book it's the closest thing to that sort of chromatic jazz style.👍
Good tip thank you.
Thanks mate!👍
I remember don mock he had a great video out in the late 80s. From blues to rock jazz on REH great tutor and very nice Iintervalic player highly recommended cheers cliff
Thanks Phil. Yeah, Don Mock was a really great teacher and top notch guitarist. He seemed to always be in the guitar magazines and even the early internet and then sort of disappeared. 👍
wonderful backing track. Stands out a lot among the usual ones on youtube!
Thanks Pequeno, appreciated!👍
Good lesson, John McLaughlin is a terrific player. I was wondering, would you be willing to do a video where you explain the chords that John McLaughlin uses in Shakti for example on the song Joy or Peace of Mind. I’ve always seen these chords being used in jazz, but somehow John made them work with indian ragas. Thanks, cheers.
Thanks mate! I have made quite a few videos already on Mclaughlin guitar chords/style. But, yes if I get time that's a great idea for a video.👍
Great ! I love it ! I do something similar without any reference to modes and with much much less technique !
Thanks! Yeah, great stuff, whatever works is the main thing. 👍👍👍
I see something akin to gypsy jazz picking here!🤔👍
Thanks ThinPicks!👍
Great Cliff, very informative; those Parker guitars were beautiful, innovative and every time I see one I regret not purchasing that Parker nylon strings that I tried at Denmark street, downtown London. That was in back in 2001, a few years back!
Thanks mate!...Yeah the parker fly is a really nice guitar, but, the frets seem to wear out quite quickly [at least on mine]...Denmark street back in the early 2000's was such a cool place, lots of guitar/music shops and also the huge music store below virgin records at the top of Tottenham court road, great days.👍
YOU.,SIR ARE A PHENOMENAL VIRTUOSO GUITARIST... I LOVE ALL OF YOUR VIDEO'S.. YOU REMIND ME SO MUCH OF UNCLE~MR.JOHN MCLAUGHLIN... COULD YOU..WOULD YOU PLEASE COVER SOME UNCLE~MR.AL DI MEOLA LESSONS??? UNCLE~MR.AL DI MEOLA WAS MY VERY FIRST GUITAR HERO... THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR VIDEO'S..
Thanks Riccardo, Appreciated! Hopefully, some new videos soon! 👍
Nice lines in there cliff top job Phil 👍
Thanks Phil!
Back for another excellent lesson. Clifford. Thanks! 🤠😎👏👍👍🎸🎸🎵🎹🎹 Cheers, Bruce
Thanks Bruce, appreciated!👍
hi maestro Martin, question - what type of tension do you use for the nylon strings, then the type of plectrum you have in the clip, I also noticed that in the first shot from above the position of the tip of the plectrum is slightly moved forward .. it's his choice, I think it's random...!. thank you in advance for any response, I greet you, stay well, a hug & see you next time... 🙂🙃😉/🎼🎵✨🎶🤍🎻🪇🎙️🪘🎹🪈🎺🎷🪕🎸🪗🥁🤍🎵✨🎶/👍✌🏽👌🏼👋🏿
Hi, thanks! ...I use normal tension strings usually Ernie ball.. "Nylon ball end strings/black 1st 2nd 3rd" or D'Addario normal tension strings [red packet]. .....The pick is a "Dunlop USA 2.0mm" [purple] pick which is quite thick and so I lightly file the sides to add a bit of brightness....As long as you are aligned with the string that is the key.👍
Tremolo was the name of a crip that I met in jail once
Lol!👍
Nice line cliff like the side stepping takes it out of the box best wishes phil 👍
Thanks Phil!
New sub and will definitely be back for more. Martino was a genius. I worked through many of his lessons on True Fire. Will be back for more. 🤠😎👏👏👍👍🎸🎼🎹🎹Bruce
Thanks Bruce. I agree, Pat Martino was one of the greats. Fantastic improviser and music theorist. 👍

Actually logic because a F#7sus is another voicing of C#m. An eye-opener 😊
Hi Dwoed, thanks. There is no C# in the chord as it being a triad of E [E G# B] over a bass of F# [the fourth of C#]. Although, you could view it as C#m7 1st inversion without the root over an F# bass. Either way, the key to this is simplicity and as long as you can see the the C#m concept one way or the other that is the key, it's a really useful device.👍
Your students are getting a wealth of information cliff hope they appreciate these tutorials have a great day Phil 👍
Thanks Phil, kind words, appreciated!
This is the next thing to dig! Thanks a lot Sir Clifford 🎉❤
Thanks Richard!!👍
More amazing ideas! Thanks a lot. Anything that saves 20 years of learning is good by me!
Thanks mate, appreciated!!!👍
A complete tool box there cliff bebop lines in there to great video phil 👍
Thanks Phil, Yeah, I really enjoyed making this video, and I had a bit of fun on the electric guitar which I don't play often👍
Can't wait to try it! I'll never be able to do it, of course, but I can't wait to try!
Thanks Steve!..Go for it!!!👍
Pat Martino was an intervalic master great tutorial cliff 👍
Thanks Phil!
"Dominant minor" ? What is dominant about the natural minor scale ?
Hi, it's taking the Dominant chord and converting it to minor, e,g Dm7 - Am 👍
Great tutorial cliff have a great weekend Phil 👍
Thanks Phil!
Ii-V-is in descending in major thirds - so a great suggestion fir tackling Giant Steps. Thanks for this.
Thanks Claymor!👍
Thanks a lot for the free pdf sir Clifford ❤
Very nice, it’s basically playing minor scale, arpeggio, or pentatonic from the 5th of the II chord, Bb=Fm…..if medium of slow tempo to play over each a m6 arp from the 5th of V chord is good too….Eb7=Bbm6, arpeggio makes Eb9 sound……thanks for your great videos!
Thanks Jake. Yeah, it's a great method. There are also some more useful concepts to this which I will address in another video 👍
What an incredibly refreshing channel. Great info. I'm so glad I found you. Much thanks! (Sax and guitar player)
Thanks Lance! Appreciated!!👍
Awesome! Great concept. I have seen videos on this as well. Very succinct explanation. Keeping keep up the good work!
Thanks Christen! 👍👍👍
So if im getting this right, for a 251 say Dm7, G7, Cmaj7- I'd play Am. But as Am is the same scale as C major why just say play the Imajor? Or are you saying use the Am arp rather than the Am scale? In the F#m7b5 to B7b9, the Am(6) is a synonym of the F# chord but on the B7b9 you have the D# which shoud clash with the E in Am but it didnt clash when you played it. I guess its that altered sound? In the slash chords for example F#7sus4 with C#m, ok i got a bit lost there. F#7sus4 has F#, A#, B, C#,E. C#m has C#, E, G#. Ok sounds amazing when you play it anyway.
Hi , to go into this requires another video really. But, for the B7b9 the E note of Am would be the sus4 but you can also play the Eb making A diminished. But, the point really is the level of simplicity and being creative and improvising with it. You can alter, add chromatics, add side stepping, target tones etc from this simple base. It's really useful and an easy way to play through the chord changes. I Iwill try and cover this some more in another video. 👍
@@CliffordMartinOnline thanks Cliff, you are right the simplicity is fantastic and I'll definately do some exercises to try to bring this into my playing.
@@shlaptop Thanks mate!👍

Very interesting.
Thanks mate!👍

Thanks!👍
Please make a video about your back tracks of percussion and ambient, you know, that's a background's KC, another part of Fripp after 1994. In a word, I think we need listen some post Fripp sound analysis and I think the back track is always your secret core in the Fripp idea's video. If we leave these, the classical guitar sound is not thick like this, and thick is important in guitar...(Except for folk and acoustic composing like progressive bluegrass etc.)
It's very informative!! Magnificent performance, superb demonstration and sound. Bravo for this beautiful video too. Thumbs up 11 Cliff. LyDia ♫♪♫
Thanks LyDia!!!👍👍👍
Minor conversion.
That’s how Pat referred to this approach.
Hi Steve, this has been referred to also as the "minor topic".👍
@@CliffordMartinOnline sure, I played with Pat and he called it minor conversion. But what ever gets the job done ✅ 👍🏼
@@SteveTheBassGuy Hi Steve, thanks. My first awareness of this was the "Minor topic" from a 2006 Guitar techniques mag interview with some examples. But, yeah I agree it's not important what it's called because it's such a useful approach to improvisation, especially for the guitar👍
Great video cliff very informative have a great week Phil 👍
Thanks Phil, appreciated!!👍👍👍
The mix between jazz Fripp Schoenberg and Stockhausen is what I personally love ❤️
