Rod Wolfe Oldies Radio DJ
United States
Registrace 9. 06. 2020
For almost 30 years, I was on the radio in the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, Pa area and Northwest New Jersey. No matter what station I always played a lot of oldies and by the mid 1970s became known as an oldies DJ. Like most radio DJs, many times I recorded my show to tape and kept it. 1980 I began to write, produce and host my Sunday Night Hall Of Fame shows, I would record and keep special nights of the show. As a contract employee to the radio stations, all show tapes and discs remained in my possession. The past few years I decided to sift through the hundreds of hours of saved shows and do digital transfers of some of my most popular shows.
I hope that if you lived in the area and listened to any of my shows that these restorations bring back some good memories. If you did not live in the area then I hope you enjoy listening to what “Lehigh Valley” radio sounded like back then.

Ricky Nelson Tribute WAEB Jan 5 1986 Pt 2 of 3 - Air Check Sunday Night Hall Of Fame
Ricky Nelson Tribute WAEB January 5 1986 Part # 2 of 3 - Air Check Sunday Night Hall Of Fame. This special aired only once at WAEB, just 5 days after Rick Nelson's tragic death.
This is Part # 2 of 3 parts broadcast January 5, 1986 on WAEB - AM 790 serving Allentown - Bethlehem - Easton, PA, aka: The Lehigh Valley. I have uploaded portions of this broadcast a few years ago but all of them were blocked. I am trying to upload them again to my CZcams Channel.
Background story of these air check videos: New Year’s Eve 1985, my Wife and I were getting ready to leave for a party. Shortly before leaving I received a phone call from WAEB informing me that Rick Nelson and his Stone Canyon Band had been killed in a plane crash. Rick and the group were on their way to a sold out New Year’s Eve show in Dallas, TX. On New Year’s day, I drove to the WAEB studio and replaced the scheduled Promo commercial for my Sunday night show with a new promo. The new one informed listeners to tune in Sunday January 5th for a special tribute to Ricky Nelson . During the rest of the week I wrote a script and pulled all my Ricky Nelson records to produce the show on reel to reel tapes. I kept a copy of that show, and this CZcams video is a digital transfer of the tapes.
I hope you enjoy a look back at one of the most UNDER-rated artists of the era. Rick always surrounded himself with the absolute best musicians, arrangers and producers and it is evident on his many hits. It’s evident on his earliest recordings on Imperial that he was trying to emulate the Sun Records sound of Memphis. Especially the artist he like the most: Carl Perkins. Over the years his band consisted of legendary guitarists like Joe Osborn on bass and James Burton on lead guitar. Songwriting talent included Dorsey and Johnny Burnette, Sharon Sheeley and Jerry Fuller.
To this very day I still get upset when I hear someone talking about the late 1960s - early 1970s California origins of what is commonly known as “Country-Rock” music. My guess is that at least 99% of the time, Rick Nelson’s name is never mentioned. During the late 1960s he was indeed one of the artists combining rock and country and his Stone Canyon Band was a great example of that union. Let’s not forget that his original band members included Tom Brumley of Buck Owens & the Buckaroos and Randy Meisner. After a couple of years with Rick Nelson, Meisner went on to help form The Eagles. It’s really hard to get much better than that.
The Sunday Night Hall of Fame Show was broadcast from 1980 to 1992 on WAEB 790 AM and WKAP 1320 AM in Allentown, Pa. My show returned between 1999 and August 2001 on WODE Oldies 99.9 located in Easton, PA. This CZcams video features audio from a radio broadcast on January 5, 1986 on WAEB radio.

I adore Lou and Leslie's medley here. However, their live performance knocked me off my feet. Powerful. :-)
A-freaking-mazing
I just came across this, simply fabulous.
Straight up freaking music. NO BULLSHIT LONG LIVE ROCK. Most music today SUCKS
John Fogerty - großartig!!!
There were/are SO MANY similar situations where local talent of only one region put out quite listenable stuff. Yes, they're oldies but are NEW to our ears & just what i've been looking for - Listening to a long playlist of obscure 'regional' pop records like these would be delightful. Sick of hearing the same 'top 7' records syndicated oldies format stations play over & over & over - gag me with a spoon . . . Are i the only one ???? Impossible - !
I can say for sure you are not the only one!! That's what kept my show on the air for so many years, I played lots of "forgotten oldies". Thanks for checking out my channel.
Rave on!
Wow! I always loved The Crickets drums cool to listen to JI Allisons drumplay. David Grissom! I didnt know you had played with The Crickets. Great show. By the way one of ABBA- Benny Anderssons first hit with his Rockband The Hepstars, was A Tribute to Buddy Holly. Their other was "Cadilac" in a slitly different version, than Samantha Fish & Jesse Dayton did last year. In the late 50s for me was Little Richard, Elvis and Buddy Holly. Keep the Holly Light shining!
Thanks for sharing the information with everyone!
Great jingles!
Glad you enjoyed the upload!
This is what everybody remembers - the bubblegum era of Ricky. Fortunately, he got better fast!
Rick Nelson still doesn't get the respect he deserves. I think the problem is, he was so popular as a teen idol in the late 50s/early 60s, the image kind of blinded people to just how great those records were. Hello Mary Lou, Poor Little Fool, Believe What You Say, Travelin' Man, Stood Up, Never Be Anyone Else But You, these are right up there with the best of pop and rockabilly of the era. Then when he returned as a more mature performer with the Stone Canyon Band, all people could think of was cute little Ricky on the tv show, saying "I don't mess around boy!" Most people still call him "Ricky", but dropping the 'y' from his name was part of growing up. Garden Party is the only song people know from the 70's, but he had many other great songs that he wrote - Easy to Be Free, Gypsy Pilot, Lifestream, Last Time Around.
Amen on all, I was a Rick(y) Nelson fan from day one until the end came. His records were finally being recognized by rock "critics" because of the quality of the songs, arrangements, production... all of it. Worst part is to this day he gets little to no credit for his hand in helping to create the West Coast "Country-Rock" sound.
Im 43, my dad played Buddy all the time when I was a kid, my dad gave me my great taste in music. R&R is still all i listen to especially Buddy, i still get chills when I listen to him, hes the best. I saw the Hollogram of Buddy and Roy, brought me to tears. I wish I could have seen Buddy in concert.
Maravilha
vastly underrated especially here in uk stuff your claptons hendrix etc along with hank marvin of shadows best ever
Carl is an excellent dancer too! We can tell by his lil’ shimmying and shaking back and forth with his knees bent just a little 🔥🔥🔥 Ah Carl - we know you can & it doesn’t matter how old you are !!!
Really enjoy your channel 😊
Thanks for the kind comment it's appreciated
A very bittersweet video. Knowing this is in the final days of Oldies 99.9 makes this special, but also sad. Especially knowing that you were planning a whole show the following Sunday, but that it never happened. Absolutely adore that Curtis Lee B-side and 'Til by The Angels! Thanks for bringing back a little piece of Lehigh Valley radio!
Thanks for your kindness, and yes it was a sad day for oldies fans. WODE received calls and letters complaining about the format change for quite a while. I received a few emails too and one in particular I'll never forget with the comment: "We just got used to hearing your show again and now it's gone again. WHO will ever play Bertha Tillman again on Lehigh Valley radio?" At that time no one could have known that decades later a ba-zillion songs are availabe to everyone. But one thing for certain, broadcast radio will never be the same again.
Two of the greatest of all time.
We use to sing along at the local milkbar with all these songs.and at63 still sing them. Its like being given,.a gift to hear this music.,,,once again,,thanks John,,JW AUST
Amazing trbiute to buddy holly songs.....keep rocking John...your the best....JW. AUST
can you post "thats all she wrote"?? thanks
So sorry, I use to have that on a late 80s Crickets LP but like a fool I sold the LP in the mid 90s.
@@rodwolfeoldiesradiodj6545 yeah...JI gave me the cassette years ago & naturally at some point it got eaten by cassette player!
He was the best, this sound you don't hear anymore, rest in peace,
Can't wait for the second half! Rod thanks giving us a glimpse of what Oldies 99.9 was.
Thanks for waiting! (Things I use to do all night now take me all night to do)
One of the best guitar players❤RIP

R.I.P. Duane Eddy🤍🤍🤍🎸
Long time Duane Eddy musical collaborators- Jim Horn on sax and Don Randi on piano.
Setzer is outstanding! 😎🎵🎶✌️
I remember seeing this show when it was televised on my local PBS Channel in NYC Back in 1988. The show was amazing!
Unfortunately the younger generation today need to hear more of this type of good music. I'm only 21 and play this type of music all the time outside. I absolutely love the 30's 40' 50' 60's and 70's music.
I absolutely love the oldies music. I wish there was a raadio station today either on AM or FM that played oldies everday 7 days a weeks.
I am 80 years old, and Buddy Holly was one of my heroes. I also love John Fogerty, and his rendition of Buddy Holly's song is wonderful!
Check out The Bobby Fuller Four.
Excellent! Great show. Thanks
Love this old rock n roll
Rest Easy Duane Eddy
Greatest Buddy Holly Tribute ever
Love, love, love Buddy Holly! That is one of my favorte songs of his and of course Marty Stuart and Steve are fabulous!
What a big & beautiful guitar Duane Eddy is playing, love that tone. I love Buddy Holly’s music.
Let’s get lost on a country road, one of my favorites.
Glad you enjoyed it... should have been a Top Ten worldwide hit....
One more John Fogerty is all time the BEST!!!!!

Das sind Klänge, die in die Beine geh'n!👌👌👌👌👌👌
Das stimmt!
Carl, the most talented of them all. Believe a very kind hearted human person. Love his all-round meaner.!!
Buddies music will never die! neither will Rock n Roll I was there when it started and thank the Lord I am still here to listen to it. Duane Eddy was there and one of my favourites but there was many. When I walk down the seafront in a well known Spanish place and Rock n Roll music is being played at full blast I just wonder where we would be without it. Thank you Rock n Roll and the musicians that played It...DG now in my 80s...
Piano player sounds a lot like the “Tulsa Sound” aka Mr Leon Russell ❤
Real Rockheros i meet Brian in 89 at the Blastoff Tour very nice Person very cool......but I never seen Carl play😢
Thank you.
