  • Rare 1971 Bootleg Top 40 DJs Vol 1 Part 1 of 4 - The World’s Largest Radio Air Check.
Released October 28, 1971 this unusual radio station Promo DJ album was mailed to radio stations. Billed as “The World’s Largest Air Check” the album featured (49) different DJs and radio stations.
The project was conceived and produced by Mike Suttle, at the time the Promotion Man for the “SSS” record label in Nashville. The label name “SSS” referenced the label owner: Shelby Sumpter Singleton Jr., who started the label after leaving the Mercury/Smash label group.
The rare album release featured non-stop radio Air Checks on both sides. When converting the rare album release from vinyl to digital PC, I decided to divide Side 1 into Part 1 and Part 2. Side 2 of the album became Part 3 and Part 4.
This CZcams video, Part #1 of 4, features the following radio stations and Disc Jockeys:
WFIL - Philadelphia - Dan Donovan
WSAI - Cincinnati - Roy Cooper
KOMA - Oklahoma City - J. Robert Dark
WAPE - Jacksonville - Larry Dixon
WWDJ - New York City (Hackensack, NJ) - Bwana Johnny
    WRIT - Milwaukee - Robert L. Collins
WRKO - Boston - Tom Kennedy
WOHO - Toledo - Norm Davis
KJR - Seattle - Norm Gregory
WCUE - Akron - Bob Alexander
KMEN - San Bernardino - Scott Seagraves
WDRC - Hartford - Bob Craig
SSS records and sister label, Plantation, released product aimed at the Soul, Country and Pop charts from 1966 into the early 1980s. The biggest national hits on the labels were from: Jeanne C. Riley, Peggy Scott & Jo Jo Benson, Johnny Adams and Harlow Wilcox & the Oakies.
After the early 1970s, The Plantation label was the more active of the two. It’s been written that label owner Shelby Singleton lost interest in the new labels after he purchased the Sun Records catalog from Sam Phillips. Re-releasing old Sun product, and releasing never before available performances from the Sun vaults seemed to be his priority. It was understandable and appreciated by early rock enthusiasts.
“Rod Wolfe Oldies Radio DJ Channel” on CZcams: My radio broadcast career began 1966. The Sunday Night Hall of Fame Show was broadcast from 1980 to 1992 on WAEB - AM 790 and WKAP - AM 1320. My show returned between 1999 and August 2001 on WODE “Oldies 99.9”, with all three stations serving the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, PA area known as “The Lehigh Valley”.
