  • This is Part # 5 of 12 parts broadcast August 26, 2001 on WODE - “Oldies 99.9”, Easton, PA serving the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton area AKA: The Lehigh Valley, Pa. This part features what was a weekly feature: Classic Car Club News that always began with a medley of "Car Cruisin' oldies.
I have uploaded portions of this broadcast a few years ago but many of the segments were blocked. I am trying to re-produce the show and upload them again to my CZcams Channel.
    On Friday August 31, 2001:
-As the Lehigh Valley was getting ready for the Labor Day Weekend, WODE Oldies 99.9 listeners were surprised, shocked and saddened that the station had changed their music format from 1950s, 1960s and some 1970s oldies to what was then a more current Classic Rock type format.
First known as “The River”, WODE then changed to “The Hawk”.
With the well-kept secret and abrupt format change in 2001, only a few lucky on-air personalities were able to continue with the new format. Since the Sunday Night Hall of Fame definitely fit the OLD format’s music, my show was dropped. As I recall, the station did retain my friend and legendary Lehigh Valley DJ Gene Kaye. I believe he continued to record his Sunday shows for only a brief time before he stopped being an on-air personality. Gene then continued his affiliation with WODE even after his oldies show was no longer programmed.
My recollection is I had mailed a couple of complete shows on mini-discs to Easton, Pa from my South Carolina residence. After broadcast, WODE would return my discs to me so that I could erase and then re-record a new show on the discs. As it turned out the August 26th show was the final one broadcast.
Once the show was returned to me, I transferred it from mini-discs to a combination of reel to reel tape and rewritable CDs. I recently found the final show CDs and mixture of reel to reel and cassette tapes and this is a digital restoration from those sources.
If you’re from the area, it’s another chance to hear the Oldies 99.9 format that was so popular in the Allentown - Easton - Bethlehem area of Pennsylvania for ten great years!
If you are from outside the original broadcast region, it’s your chance to give a listen to what Lehigh Valley oldies radio sounded like back then.
I was honored to be just a small part of that history of the WODE Oldies 99.9 format. I hope you enjoy this final broadcast of the Lehigh Valley’s Original Sunday Night Hall of Fame.
The Sunday Night Hall of Fame Show was broadcast from 1980 to 1992 on WAEB 790 AM and WKAP 1320 AM in Allentown, Pa. My show returned between 1999 and August 2001 on WODE Oldies 99.9 located in Easton, Pa.
