  • WCRV AM 1580 Summer 1972 Air Check - Roddy (Rod) Wolfe Show.
I recently pulled from storage a pair of albums produced in 1971 and 1972 by Mike Suttle and released as Volume 1 on SSS International label and Volume 2 on Mega label. The albums were billed as “The World’s Largest Air Check” and featured radio station DJs from across the USA.
Since the Volume 1 featured a few DJs from smaller markets, I decided to prepare a tape and send it to Suttle. So the long story - short version is this:
Late Summer 1972, I used a lot of a roll of splicing tape and more than a few razor blades to create a scoped air check for consideration. I figured, HEY, what the heck. Back then, we were proud of what we were somehow able to produce at little ol’ WCRV in Washington, NJ. The station was known as “The Rock Of Northwest New Jersey” covering the Washington - Hackettstown area as well as into the Phillipsburg NJ and Easton, PA area. I probably ran out of splicing tape because the air check ends with the complete 1968 Eddie Floyd version of "Bring It On Home To Me".
Back then WCRV was also known as "First With the Music" and “The Hitmaker Station” for working closely with record label Promotion Departments from both New York City and Philadelphia. And so I prepared my tape, approximately (8) minutes in length, knowing that IF it were to be used, Suttle would chop it down to a minute or so anyway. After finishing, I mailed the tape to Suttle, and a couple months later the Volume 2 album arrived in the mail. Obviously sent too late to even be considered, I thought that eventually a Volume 3 would be produced. Well, if there was a Volume 3, I have never seen a copy. When I pulled my albums out of storage, I remembered producing that air check tape for Mike. I also remembered that I made a copy of the tape before sending it out. After much digging through my boxes, I found that copy and decided to upload it to CZcams. Like I said, what the heck, and here it is!
I have also uploaded both Bootleg Top 40 albums to my CZcams channel for you to remember the great sound of “Top 40/Boss Radio”. Please look for them on my channel: “Rod Wolfe Oldies Radio DJ”.
(My radio broadcast career began 1966 at WAEB AM-790 in Allentown, PA and through January 1993 also included stations: WKAP AM - 1320, WEEX AM-1230, WGPA AM-1100, WCRV AM 1580 Washington, NJ, WFMV - FM 106.3 Blairstown NJ - Stroudsburg PA. From 1999 to September 2001, My Sunday Night Hall of Fame Show returned and was broadcast on WODE “Oldies 99.9” serving the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, PA area known as “The Lehigh Valley”.

I remember that station well. It was my very first job in 1975. I have very fond memories of Nick DeRienzo, Tommy John, Chucky Bea and others. I was moved to the FM, WFMV in 1976 where TJ was the PD. Left in 1979 to go to WEEX and over to WKAP and onward to a long programming career in Memphis, Indianapolis and others.

Great to hear from another former WCRV DJ ! I was there 1969 to May 1974 and along with Chucky Bea and engineer Steve Boyer originally helped put (New Jersey Solid Gold) WFMV-FM on the air. Those were the days. Sounds like for a couple of years we were just missing each other at WCRV, WFMV, The Big X, WKAP, etc. Long live small-medium market radio in our hearts and minds...
