  • Rare 1972 Bootleg Top 40 DJs Vol 2 Part 2 of 2 - The World’s Largest Radio Air Check. Released during the Fall of 1972, this unusual radio station Promo DJ album was mailed to radio stations. Billed as “The World’s Largest Air Check”, the album featured (34) different radio stations across the USA. Volume 1 of the project was produced 1971. I have never seen a Volume 3 version.
The project was conceived and produced by Mike Suttle, who was the Promotion Man for the “SSS” record label in Nashville. Volume 1 was on SSS, but this Volume 2 was pressed on the Mega label, best remembered for the Sammi Smith hit “Help Me Make It Through the Night”.
Both albums featured non-stop radio Air Checks on both sides. This Part 2 features the entire Side 2 with the following radio stations and Disc Jockeys:
WCAO - Baltimore - Ron Ryley
WMAK - Nashville - Scott Shannon
KTSA - San Antonio - Sonny Melendres & Friends
WFLI - Chattanooga - Fast Jimmy
WAYS - Charlotte - Jay Thomas (Yes, THAT Jay Thomas!)
    KAKC- Tulsa - Scott Seagraves
WBBQ - Augusta - Buddy Carr
WDGY - Minneapolis - Johnny Canton
KLEO - Wichita - Mike Miller
WKBW - Buffalo - Sandy Beach
WCOL - Columbus - Terry Tyler
KILT - Houston - John St. John
WPDQ - Jacksonville - Jerry Gordon
KCBQ - San Diego - long air check includes at least:
Don Fox, Bill Moffitt, Dave Conley, Gene Knight & Lenny Mitchell
*** And then I added one more Air Check from 1972 that was not on the album:
WCRV - Washington, NJ - Roddy Wolfe
Long story - short version: Late Summer 1972, I used a lot of a roll of splicing tape and more than a few razor blades to create an air check to send to Mike Suttle. Since Volume 1 featured a wide variety of air checks from small to-medium to large radio markets, I figured, HEY, what the heck. Back then, we were proud of what we were somehow able to produce at little ol’ WCRV. I did mail the tape, and a couple months later Volume 2 arrived in the mail. Since my tape was sent too late to even be considered, I thought maybe Mike could use a minute or so for Volume 3. Well, IF there was a Volume 3 produced, I have never seen a copy. When I pulled my albums out of storage, I remembered producing that tape for Mike. I also remembered that I made a copy of the tape. After much digging through my boxes, I found the copy and decided to include it. Like I said, what the heck.
“Rod Wolfe Oldies Radio DJ Channel” on CZcams: My radio broadcast career began 1966. The Sunday Night Hall of Fame Show was broadcast from 1980 to 1992 on WAEB - AM 790 and WKAP - AM 1320. My show returned between 1999 and August 2001 on WODE “Oldies 99.9”, with all three stations serving the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, PA area known as “The Lehigh Valley”.
