    Visually, looks great - the fate tokens to mitigate poor movement rolls is a plus, though our house rule of rolling two dice and picking one will likely still be used to bring some decision making to that part of the game.

    Thank you so much for this review. Oddly, I never thought of the simplicity of the game being such a big part of its enjoyability, but in my 1980s school gaming club it was what we turned to when we didn't want the relative complexity of AD&D or Runequest that day and just a fun romp through quests. It was also, together with Dungeonquest, the game I taught to my kids as an introduction to fantasy roleplaying. Great to see this new edition and thank you for walking us through the changes. It really does look beautiful and I am happy that it is still in existence in this new iteration some 40+ years after its origins.

      So, Drakborgen was the original Swedish edition, then Games Workshop adapted it. Then FFG did their version, which went through a couple of iterations but is now out of print. Then in 2022 there was a Kicksarter to fund a reprint of the original Swedish edition. But that's it for now. I wouldn't be surprised if Avalon Hill got a crack at a new edition now they are publishing Talisman.

      @@House_Of_Cards_ I am really not a fan of apps for board games, but yes, an app can replace the villain player. It would need to allocate monsters to rooms and secretly track their wounds. However, this is a competitive race game to see who gets the most points as well, so it works best when there are several players for the heroes. I just don’t think it would make for a great solo experience.

    Do you need this if you have mansions of madness?

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Před dnem

      They are very different games, really. In this one you randomly generate a house and have random encounters in it, collecting random objects, and then eventually you discover what the haunt is and will usually end up fighting against a traitor. Mansions is much more scripted, with fixed maps and items that progress a narrative, more intricate mechanisms, and a dedicated opponent - player or app. I had the first edition of Mansions of Madness but eventually got rid of it. I said at the time it was just too cumbersome and would benefit from an app. Shortly after that the second edition with the app came out, but I had no desire to go back and try it again. Ultimately, I see Betrayal being much lighter, more accessible, and sillier.

      Thanks for the kind words. I don't have a lot of experience with earlier editions of the game, as I never owned them, but from what I know this appears to be the "cleanest" edition. It's a tight system with little clutter. All the art and miniatures are new, but the main difference is the way the haunts are generated. By picking a scenario card, and then having the haunt linked to both the scenario card AND the omen that triggered it, you get more of a sense of story - even if those stories are sometimes ridiculous. Apparently the haunts are all new for third edition, and I don't know how they compare to the haunts from previous editions. I should imagine some people will have a preference for a particular set. Of course, in all sets, there will be some that are great, and some that are clunkers, but I have generally enjoyed every haunt I have played so far.

Every aspect, to completely immerse oneself in this world. I mean, the amount of stuff in this game, is slightly intimidating to be honest. To play this game in its full breadth, would require some considerable investment in learning all the rules, and the minutia of the game. Would be cool to see some Cathayan and Kislev characters be introduced though! As for 40k, would love to see maybe Dark Mechanicus? Exploring an underutilized part of the lore with a few new units/models while not having to fully introduce a new Army would make sense. Otherwise perhaps it could be Slannesh / Emperors children and also Khorne / World Eaters? One would be an upcoming range and the other is new enough to need additional units… could be cool to see Like a demon focused Quest with Grey Knights and Inquisitors trying to shut down an area where demonic incursions are more and more frequent. Or even working in the Ynnari angle for additional hero options. Maybe they’re exploring a maiden world or something. Lastly I would love a quest game diving into a hive world with Tyranids and Genestealer Cults. It’s a shame (for me personally lol) they used that concept for Necromunda already 😅

    I was born the same year than you (happy birthday 🎉 btw). And I wonder why so many hobbyists - not all - are roughly from the same generation. For me, the beginning was HQ in 90. That era really left its mark on adventure gaming. Is that why we still play or rediscover these games nowadays? In any case, while games have evolved very positively in recent years, I don't see they have the same impact on the younger generation.

      I think it was just a very inventive, creative time and there weren't as many pulls for our attention as there are now. It's tough to focus these days when everyone carries around a little device that has the whole world in it.

    Love Talisman. Though it doesn't have the board expansions of 4e, at least this edition isn't prohibitively expensive.

      It's going to be interesting to see what they do with expansions. The first is something new, adding co-op play but no new boards, but I am expecting them to run with this and we will soon have lots of board add-ons too.

      Monsters with diagonal attacks will attack diagonally. When heroes attack, you just tap on the monster wherever it is on the board and mark the wounds on it. I'm not sure why what is happening on your app that makes you think you can't attack diagonally.

      Now we're getting somewhere. Avalon Hill's version uses the North American rules set, where short swords don't grant the ability to attack diagonally. This is different to the old European rules.

      @@BastianTime Yep. The Japanese version is basically a different game. This video is comparing the European and NA versions, which from the outside look very similar, and play in a similar way, but have some fundamental differences. I don’t have, and have never played, the Japanese version.
