- Always Board Never Boring recently reviewed the fifth edition of Talisman from Avalon Hill and Games Workshop. He was reminded of how much fun he had as a child simply flicking through the character cards, ranking his favourites, and making up stories about them. That being the case he has decided to put together a quick video looking at the 12 hero characters in the new Talisman 5th Edition core set.
And don't worry if Talisman isn't your bag, ABNB will be focusing on something completely different next time.
This video is only possible because ABNB received a review copy of Talisman from Avalon Hill. If you would like to preorder Talisman yourself, check with your local stockist, Amazon, or order direct from Hasbro here:

Monk is my favorite! His advantage is not being a threat. The strong characters take themselves out.
Strangely thematic.
That's an interesting take. I feel he sometimes gets picked on because he's an easy target, and he's easier to take followers from.
Ordered my copy today. Thanks for the coverage. Haven't played it since the 2nd edition. Looking forward to introducing my niece to it!
It's been finessed a little over the years, but it's still basically that same Talisman you remember. I hope you have a lot of fun with it.
I'm new to Talisman and I figured 5th edition was a good place to get into it. These characters look like a lot of fun. I love the simple gameplay but high amount of emergent story talisman looks like it offers. Looking forward to getting my preorder copy! Thanks for your coverage it's getting me hyped.
It's a very fun, simple game. The best part really is seeing what happens to your adventurer and what objects and followers you end up with.
Dwarf and Troll Forever!!! The First One was a revelation when after growing I started using my brain while playing, the second one was my first choice when I was younger. I'm in love with talisman.
I like the dwarf a lot. There is something quite pleasing about all those tiny little buffs. It makes it feel like you are always getting a little bonus no matter what you do. He's good value just for his ability in the mines!
Really appreciate these peeks at the 5E goodies. My wife and I have already planned our first game, when it arrives. She will play the thief against my assassin. Going to be interesting. Cheers!
That's going to be quite a race!
The ghoul has always been my favorite character
There is something cool and creepy about defeating an opponent, raising it from the dead, and then sacrificing it again later on.
Yep me too. ❤
The ghoul is one of my favs.
He does look like fun! Priest is tempting too!
@@petergross7235 The Priest is a powerhouse. Have fun
Regarding the Elf, when you land on a woods and just teleport between them each turn, avoiding what you need to and collecting all the good stuff, he really shines. If you're lucky enough to get a stream on a woods, you're going to get ahead pretty quickly. The fate movement kind of makes him better because it potentially helps you set up your forestwalking earlier.
As I said in the video, it can be good when there is stuff in the woods you need, but with the new fate movement it's quite easy for other players to land on spaces they want anyway, and spaces like magic fountains tend to get drained rather quickly now. I think players tend to avoid the woods more when the elf is in play anyway to minimise the risk. It would be a slightly better option if you could roll for movement first, and then choose to teleport if you didn't like the result.
I like the monk, he seems always like a dark horse, and with the new rule on how to increase strength and craft, he could keep up with the assassin, I think.
The fact you can never add more than 3 craft to your strength in a battle, and you can't add strength to your craft in psychic combat, means I always feel like he's floundering below the curve. The assassin quite quickly ends up insta-killing whatever she meets and she really puts the pressure on other players to hurry up.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring That's true, the monk starts at +2 in battle above the Assassin and if he can draw right should be able to take out most creatures at str4 minimum, needing only 2 strength points to level up first should help as well, though my mind may change once I play a few games, still waiting for mine and the digital copy to be released.
On the wizard card, it says "if you ever run out of spells immediately draw a new spell card, ensuring that you always have at least one spell, does that mean the wizard could potentially cast a ton of spells in one turn as long as he doesn't run into a spell you have to cast at a contextual time?
No. You can never cast more spells in your own turn than you started that turn with (maximum 3), so if you ever draw a card from running out you aren't able to cast it that turn. Additionally, you can only cast a maximum of one spell on another player's turn, and only a few spells are "any time" spells, the rest are for use in specific situations. So you can't spam your spells and I've rarely seen someone use more than one at a time.
Any sense for how heroes like Sorceress will fit into the first expansion which has co-op?
We don't know exactly, but in my recent video on the Fate Beckons expansion I do go into that a bit. The expansion is introducing "villain characters" so it looks like there will be AI-powered rivals moving around the board and they will get more powerful as the doom tracker advances. I assume they will be accumulating items, followers and wealth that you will be able to take from them.
If you check out my Instagram page (link in video description) I have just shared a spoiler image of four of these villains, and a fifth one is spoiled in my video on the expansion.
Dwarf is great for an early win! But... maybe not with the Dragon. How tough is he?
Also, the Monk actually is a lot more powerful with the new levelling rules. Essentially +3 strength but you can trade trophies on the cheap.
The dwarf has won both times he has turned up in our games since playing fifth edition. I thin he's a great character.
Not sure I understand what you mean about the monk being more powerful with the new leveling rules. The first time he levels strength he only needs three trophies, but then he will need four, then five, then six, same as every other character, yet no matter how much he levels his craft he will still only add three to his strength in combat. When you add in the fact he can't use weapons or armour, I still think he ends up being on the weak side of things. But other people in the comments find him quite a useful character, so opinions do vary!
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring What I mean is, if another character had strength 5, he'd need 6 trophies to level up. The monk essentially starts with strength 5 in battles but only needs 3 trophies to level up (then four, and so on). Sure, it's not EXACTLY Strength 5 for the purpose of breaking down doors and stuff but it functions the same early on when you're just grinding.
As for not being able to use weapons it DOES matter, but he basically has a +3 sword! It gets annoying when you can't use a Rune Sword but his mind is his weapon.
I absolutely love the way they redid the ghoul very almost looks like a Victorian vampire more than a ghoul now and the monks just too damn happy looking for me
Yes, it's an interesting take on the ghoul who has always looked like a monstrous, walking corpse in previous editions.
hmm... if they skipped those two, maybe it was because they wanted even numbers for each alignment..?
If I played, I would probably take the Warrior, nice basic starter to let the world fill in around you.
I suspect it was a combination of factors like space limitations on the box size they were pushing for, and keeping the costs down. I do quite like playing the warrior because I roll so badly it really does take some of the pressure off always having two dice in combat.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Hmm.... so do you think, in this new cooperative Talisman, the characters will be Alignment Locked? Like evil characters cant work with good characters, but Neutral can work with either?
Interesting idea. It's possible - they could do it without "locking" character choices because the rules allow you to change any character's alignment at the start of the game. However, changing alignment can happen multiple times throughout a single game so they will probably allow mixed groups anyway.
It looks like they may have changed the Warrior to a female character.
They have. The warrior is a woman according to her biog, but the art and miniature are pretty androgynous. Sort of has a Knight of the Flowers feel to it.
Did you ever play talisman Batman? I really enjoy that one. It’s in my collection.
I've only ever played 1st, 2nd 3rd, and 5th editions of classic Talisman. I almost picked up Relic but never did in the end.
WHERE IS BARBARIAN?!? 2nd edition barbarian was my favorite. Just walked around beating the s**t out of other players, until they got bored of starting again with a new hero. That is another way to win the game btw.
Barbarian wasn't from the second edition core set, he appeared in "Talisman The Expansion Set," so it makes sense we haven't seen him in fifth edition yet.
It doesn't look like we are getting a barbarian in the Fate Beckons expansion for fifth edition, but I foresee many more expansions, and I think we will get a barbarian eventually.
God that new art is awful compared to the Gary Chalk original……
Few things compare to Gary Chalk. I like the new art a lot, but I agree it isn't close to his.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I met Gary a couple of years ago and he was a lovely man, he signed my rule book from 2nd edition Talisman (for which the cover of the book was not his art) with the comment: “Accept no substitutes”
I like this new edition and I will buy it but I hate warrior art. Can't tell if its he/she/it or whatever... I will print my own warrior I guess
The warrior is referred to as "she" in the biog and has long hair, but both the miniature and art are androgynous enough that I think you could easily read it either way. I thought they gave the warrior a slightly classical, romantic look, like in artwork such as Knight of the Flowers, which I rather like, but I can understand people wanting a more "war-like" warrior instead.
character are fine, board is ok, but the rest of cards ... omg looks like AI generated random assets.
Avalon Hill have made an official statement naming the art studio and confirming the art isn't AI. Maybe they are lying, or lying by omission - maybe it's a case of plausible deniability - but I have no reason not to believe them at this stage.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I dont care eider they do or didnt use AI, the problem remains, cards looks bad (very generic)
Cards looks like generated by AI, board description and pictures are turned upside down so it look weird no matter from which side you are looking at it, overall this edition provides less content than 4th and elements are of worse quality (e.g. coins, frogs etc.). Only thing that is better are figures. I'm skipping this edition
@@MMalak-mf3dm yeap, I am very glad I didnt sold my 4th ed. with almost all of the expantions,
I’m getting thoroughly sick of people baselessly shouting about AI art every time they see a picture they don’t like for whatever reason. Don’t like something? Great, that’s your prerogative. Calling it AI for no reason? Show me some proof please.
the character art is shit in this edition..
For me, Gary Chalk's art from the first and second edition will always rule supreme, but I consider the 5th edition character art to be much better than the 4th edition character art with its constipated warrior and hunchback troll. I guess everyone has their own idea of what makes art awesome. Thanks for watching.
For me the revised 4th edition artwork is the best!
I’m very happy with this art direction. They’ve gone to one of my favorite games. Is there anything on the backside of the character cards and lore? It’s too bad they couldn’t upgrade those stupid little cones the blue and red ones. They just look so junky and so 80s.
The back of the character cards just say Talisman and have a sort of shield design. I can upload a picture of it to my Instagram if you like. There are two pages in the rules dedicated to character biogs, but each character only gets two lines and it's all very basic stuff.
5th edition is very ugly and they implemented woke sheat, what the fish? I prefer 4th edition that I own.
