Fleetwood Mac Jeremy and Danny
The vastly underrated time period of Fleetwood Mac called "Kiln House." While Jeremy was experiencing self doubt, Danny was enjoying his new chapter with the band. Perhaps Jeremy didn't feel it at the time, but he and Danny were becoming a dynamic duo, especially towards the end.

Fleetwood Mac Jeremy Spencer or Bob Welch

Was Jeremy Spencer or Bob Welch a better fit with Danny Kirwan? Here are two live renditions of "Tell Me All The Things You Do" showing how different each sounded. The first features Jeremy sharing lead guitar with Danny; the second with Bob playing rhythm. Danny and Jeremy playing off of each other is a revelation, not only in this number, but in other Kirwan songs such as Purple Dancer and St...

Anyone who needs any proof of the band's power at this time need only check out the Purple Dancer segment in this medley. And although I agree that Danny was the key to that power, and that Jeremy was a congenial influence on him, I'd like to also pay credit to John & Christine. John plays his bass like a lead guitar, and with Christine banging away on the keyboards, you can hear four distinct musical lines blazing away on this cut. How I wish Jeremy had stayed with FM. Alternatively, how I wish Danny had had a friend he could rely on and who could have buoyed him up as he dealt with the band's 1971 personnel changes.

I think Jeremy and Danny definitely worked better together. They got on very well (at least from what I've heard about them working on Spencer's first solo album). And musically there was so much chemistry. The Madison Blues compilation which has a ton of demos/live from kiln house era really shows how well they gelled and complemented each others playing, the band is insanely tight. As for Station Man I think it's both the slide being an integral part and Bob not being able play the parts well. That's what makes me think that Bob Weston maybe would've been a better fit to work with Danny for something like that and the Purple Dancer on stage. Can't deny that Kirwan/Welch's work together was fantastic, even if Welch didn't contribute and gell as much with Kirwan. It's interesting how much their material on future games complemented each others. Musically the band sounds great during the future games lineup, a bit softer at times compared to previous stuff but they could still rock out and improv and Christine's keyboards became a lot more prominent because of having only 1 lead guitarist. I fucking love how much Kirwan takes over in the 1972 renditions of TMATTYD, because the way Kirwan/Spencer played together imo didn't work as well for a song like that. It needs a lot of rockin soloing and less interplay between the guitarists. Also gotta add that I think the lineup during the time Peter rejoined to help them finish their tour could've perfected their material if that iteration stuck around. I assume you've heard the 20 min version of TMATTYD that spirals into a fantastic jam from the San Bernardino show and that just showed how perfect that lineup was. The live songs could've been perfected and you have all the best players of the Mac all together.

    • @RobbyByrne

I believe if you take a poll, FM fans would unanimously select Bare Trees and Future Games over Kiln House. I'd be in that camp as well. For those who haven't followed FM before Bob Welch, you are missing out big time. It's no secret the time with Peter Green is mind blowing, but the Kiln House LP is underrated to say the least. The song "Future Games" is a masterpiece. However, we all know now Bob wasn't good for Danny. Among other things, Welch was trying to prod Mick into firing Danny a few months into his tenure. The fact that lineup carried on for another year and was able to give us such glorious music is extraordinary.

Why divulge that 30 years after the fact? "Mick and I are back on good terms now...but I must say that he has never, in my opinion, hired people that represent him properly. There are a lot of people who worked for Mick in the past, that I think never should have...and the problem is, once these people are in place, Mick tends to turn a blind eye to the problem and move on to his next venture."
