Those guys were fearless and they LISTENED to what the others in the band were doing. they trusted and respected one another musically while playing, and no one was trying to push the music in a particular direction. more like jazz than rock or even blues, although the phrasings and rhythms were mostly from blues. Really a one of a kind band, and never quite the same after PG left. And never to be replicated, although some have come close.
You can tell this comes from the heart of the Green Manalishi era. Here the band bends their blues roots in that psychedelic direction so characteristic of 1970. I saw the Dead a year after the date of this concert, and I'd say their jams were similar at that time. It wasn't until the following year that the Dead started kowtowing to their more blitzed fans (Dead-Heads, naturally), abandoning their folk-blues roots for aimless wanderings around dark stars.
