    I have driven "electrahaul" trucks that had a detroit diesel motor as essentially a generator for the electric motors in the wheels that drove the truck. The truck was a bit "sketchy" when it came to stopping. It had huge disk brakes that were used for bringing the sllwed truck tk a stop. The main method of slowing tne truck was using the "retarder" which made the electric motors run slower and the sketchy part came when going downhill. You had to engage the retarder befor cresting the hill or your speed would exceed the trucks ability to stop...

    Speaking of Volvo and Scania, I am interested in one question - since in Australia they use both European and american models of trucks, and both cabovers and long nosed, and we all know that both Scania and Volvo have long nosed models like the Volvo VNL and Scania T series, why aren't these two models of the brands popular in Australia? May be you can do a video on that topic.

    6:10 I think that someone will try to use electric one day. Some trucking company that is using electric in the future will attempt it and if it’s successful then it may take hold. Battery technology is getting better and better CATL is currently setting up in Texas, USA to build batteries for Tesla at their Gigafactory CATL is the largest manufacturer of EV Batteries in the world Their batteries are used in 32% of the electric vehicles in the world They are working on two new batteries for Tesla and they are not lithium ion These new Batteries are half the weight and charge two times faster, plus they cost half as much The technology is not going to end there It’ll get better and better, which will give longer range and cost less money Just as long as there’s electricity on the route, then charging stations can be built It may happen one day because maintenance on a electric semi is multiple times less money than on a diesel semi And the cost per mile is multiple times less for the electricity versus diesel. Somebody is going to want to save that money and they are going to try it out and see if they can get it working Well will just have to wait and see.

    Been driving CDL class A vehicles for 25 years and the Freightliner trucks have been the best overall. The Volvo trucks are very comfortable and very ergonomically designed but break down unnecessarily too often, Peterbilt and Kenworth are a mixed bag for me and Mack and Internationals are not for me, terrible turning radius and weak motors with a host of issue on many older Mack and International trucks. Sterling and Ford's are the same but seem to be better in reliability. Never drove a Western Star but most guys I talk to that do seem to like them. So if I had my pick depending on what I'm hauling but you can't go wrong with Freightliner and certain Peterbilt trucks. Maybe if Volvo offers a model that is more durable I'd choose them. Let's see 🤙🏽🇺🇲

    At 4:45 Air brakes.... "...air pressure is used to apply pressure to the brakes...." Boy you pooch smooched that one!! That used to be the way it worked, back in the 50s and 60s and maybe early 70s. Since then they have reverse the procedure. Air pressure is used to unlock the brakes, since they are in an applied position without pressure. You can't move a semi truck without air pressure!! The brakes are locked!!!! Applying the break pedal releases that pressure, causing the brakes to apply....

  • @ontheroadagain4773

    Have you heard of a "turbo compound" engine? Scania introduced the 11 litre DTC11 engine in 1990 that produced 401 hp, around 25 hp more than the normal intercooled DSC11 engine. It had a normal turbocharger + another exhaust turbine connected in series with the first one. The power from this turbine was mechanically transferred by gears directly to the crankshaft. This is indeed a more complex construction and I don't know how much this technology has been used.

  • @ontheroadagain4773

    It already has been told that the thing at 3:08 is a mechanical supercharger, in this case a belt-driven screw compressor that rotates at pretty much same rpms as the engine. And at 5:03 is in fact an electric powered supercharger, not a turbo either. "Turbo" itself actually means the exhaust powered turbine. The advantage of an electric powered compressor is that it starts to wortk immediately when you press the trottle, before the engine itself reacts, faster than even a supercharger. And a computer controlled electric powered compressor can give the right torque at any speed and load.

    The prime reason why road trains (b-doubles / triples etc.) are fostered in Australia is because that per equivalent mass load over the same / equivalent distance - the amount of diesel fuel used is at least double that used by railroads! The Oil Industry Lobby (OIL) were identified and shamed in the USA in the CE 1940s and then the OIL moved its operations into Australia from the USA in the late CE 1950s to serially compromise all Government ministers / opposition / lobbyists etc from all sides of all Governments to have the trams and the train services / lines gradually run/closed down (for the most simple / foolish reasons) - and replaced by Road trains that - BTW damage the roads far more than railroads - - - and these truck roads then require massive diesel guzzling heavy earth moving equipment from "guess who" (you guessed it: the OIL) to repair / rebuild these roads - meanwhile Australia's economy is going down the economic tubes!

  • @fontheking5
    @fontheking5 Před dnem

    3:08 is a supercharger, not a turbo. A supercharger is driven by the crankshaft via a belt, because of this, a supercharger is always turning, and has no lag, unlike a turbo that is driven by the exhaust gases and must spool up before giving power.
